NEW YORK — Republican John McCain is not going to make his election night remarks in the traditional style _ at a podium standing in front of a sea of campaign workers jammed into a hotel ballroom. Oh, the throng of supporters will hold the usual election night party at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix on the evening of Nov. 4.

But the Republican presidential nominee plans to address another group of supporters and a small group of reporters on the hotel lawn; his remarks will be simultaneously piped electronically to the party inside and other reporters in a media filing center, aides said.

Aides said Thursday that the arrangement was the result of space limitations and that McCain might drop by the election watch party at some other point.

Only a small press "pool" _ mostly those who have traveled regularly with the candidate on his campaign plane, plus a few local Arizona reporters and other guests _ will be physically present when McCain speaks.

Thomas Patterson, a government professor at Harvard's Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, called the arrangement "unusual" but said the campaign may simply be bowing to the reality that the candidate's remarks are geared toward the televised audience rather than those in the hall.

"Addressing your supporters election night is one of those traditions in politics, like where you choose to launch your campaign," Patterson said. "Why wouldn't you want the energy of the crowd? And if you're going to lose, you almost need it even more."

With just 12 days left in the presidential contest, most polls show the Arizona senator trailing Democrat Barack Obama nationally and in most battleground states, although a new AP-GfK poll showed the race tightening a bit in the last few days.

Obama, by contrast, plans to address a giant outdoor celebration election night in Chicago's Grant Park. The event is free and open to the public, but the campaign was charging media organizations a hefty fee for close-in spots on the camera risers and platforms and for cable and wireless Internet at those spots.

The Obama campaign was also charging news organizations $935 per person for a spot in its press filing center, as opposed to $695 per person at the McCain gathering. But as Obama spokesman Bill Burton pointed out, "Anyone credentialed for our filing center will also be able to watch the event live and in person, unlike the McCain event."

Perhaps some of the African-American members of the McCain family will be included. McCain has NEVER attended the reunions.....his brother Joe has.
But I digress...PLEASE remind everyone to VOTE!

Sooo McCain thinks he might lose so he doesn't want to face his supporters? Gee, perhaps he is ashamed of his vile behavior during the campaign. Maybe he is just sick of hanging out with actual people. It just looks like he is ready to slink away after such a dishonorable several months.

More petulance to NOT be in one room with ALL supporters equally -- and not only concede with grace, like a sitting United States Senator -- but thank and help his supporters ACCEPT DEFEAT WITH GRACE AND DIGNITY.

Instead, John McCain will stalk out like a VICTIM and blame everyone else but himself.

These machinations to insulate him are NOT LEADERSHIP. They are the acts/conduct of a man thinking more of himself than those who spent two years of their lives on the Republican Primaries and G.E.

Turn the page on these entitled, elite, legacy frat boyz, America. They think Americans are their personal chattel, servants and currency.

Turn the page!

Grace and dignity? Not in their vocabulary.

This home page picture of McCain (with what seems like a "salute") makes me sad.

It reminds me of the "good-bye wave" that Nixon gave, before boarding the plane.

I will obviously be very happy to see President Obama in the White House (after much voting by everyone, of course).

But I have, more than once, been saddened by witnessing the implosion of the long-time public servant, John McCain.

I disagree with, and abhor, much of what I've witnessed him and his campaign doing. But I know that I don't have what it takes to have put myself "out there" like that, through such vigorous, vulnerable, and constant scrutiny, so I do respect his stamina.

I just wish he would preserve his dignity, and take some steps in the remaining days to help heal his Party and the country, rather than keeping up the farce and stirring up the pot of fear and division.

In so many ways . . . it is truly sad.

And nobody has commoditized self-pity better or more often than John McCain, who has internalized it. His POW experience has defined and harmed him. Lacking self-awareness and nobody to ask him NOT to run -- he has led himself to this unfathomable place. It would have been better to end his career with his dignity, but his overreaching ambition for the Presidency as a PRIZE and a RIGHT -- blinded him to his shortcomings. The final desperation of the last few weeks speaks volumes about the fundamental lack of character that his war hero status has covered up for a generation. He should NOT have run -- for himself -- and the American people who will have to retire him. Clearly, he doesn't have the ability (psychologically?) to endure a traditional concession (aka Al Gore did after a far more gruelling experience). He is vulnerable and Cindy should not have allowed him to run.

I wasn't even talking about the "war hero" part. I've heard that story ad nauseum. And (over) using it as he did was despicable.

I just have a personal aversion to seeing people debase themselves in such a public way.

Cindy is not his keeper. His own conscience should have prevented his run.

The fact that he does not have such a self-regulatory apparatus in place tells me more than I need to know about him.

Just remember he snuck out on the first wife after her accident to marry the richer younger , in his own words,"C=nt".

I don't think he ever had all the integrity everyone wants to attribute to his earlier 2000 days. He's an opportunist at everyone else's benefit.

Every time I find myself feeling bad for him, similar thoughts cross my mind. He may have pockets of decency within him, but the opportunism wins out nearly every time.

Update - Bristol's baby's daddy got free clothes too!

CBS News has learned that the Republican National Committee"s $150,000 shopping spree for Alaska Governor Sarah Palin included clothes to outfit Palin"s entire family, including her soon to be son-in-law, Levi Johnston.

I try not to be a pesimest, sorry if I mispell anything, forgot my glasses, anyway, I just hope people don't get ahead of themselves, I don't trust the GOPERS, I don't trust the thugs they have and the dirty tricks they've used since NIXON. So please go out and vote, if you have already then call anyone you know that hasn't and ask if they need a ride, if it's an elderly person bring a lawn chair so they can sit down in case the lines are long. Once this is all over maybe the knot in my stomach will go away.
I'm so looking forward to Obama/Biden taking over, however, the RETHUGS are not going to go down easy, they've had a lock on power for to long.

Yes, all you volunteers on the ground trying to get Crash elected, he is saying that partying with you is less of a priority than holding what will likely be a short, "get off my lawn" type press conference.

He used you like he used his dad, the Naval Academy, Charles Keating, the media and two wives (and maybe a paramour on the side) to get where he is and now he is going to just leave you there like an ugly fat chick after a little furtive bouncy bouncy.

This has been about him and him alone and not about America nor about his party. And I personally will be glad to see the Straight Narcissism Express sailing off into the electoral Bermuda Triangle never to be heard from again.

I wouldn't be celebrating just yet. The Republicans haven't really started the final drive. Lots of illigal voter intimidation and dirty tricks are the last phase. I volunteer at an O headquarters upstate PA. A small state university in town. The town has been identified as a target for out of state GOP operatives and already there's mixed messages to the 900 or so college students as to what kind of ID is required. Thats because the Republican controlled county election officials dictate those rules by law and we're not getting one clear answer. It's going on all over the nation where high concentrations of new voter regs are identified.

No, I wouldn't celebrate anything yet. That is if you really want to see O as president.

Don't come down so hard on citadelgrrl05. Republicans have been in power for a long time and they will NOT cede that power easily. I think that white America is only now seeing for the first time the intimidation and poll rigging methods republicans have employed for decades. Believe me, repubs will fight tooth and nail to retain their power by ANY means.
