NEW YORK — Scott McClellan, President Bush's former press secretary, says he is backing Barack Obama for president.

McClellan made the endorsement during a taping of Comedian D.L. Hughley's new show that is premiering on CNN this weekend. The former Bush administration official said he wanted to support the candidate that has the best chance for changing the way Washington works and getting things done.

He's the second former Bush administration figure this week to publicly back Obama, following former Secretary of State Colin Powell. McClellan caused bitterness among his former co-workers with a tell-all book that criticized Bush.

I struggle to figure out McClellan's motivation. Is he trying to redeem his image, maybe buy back his soul from the devil. Is this further apology for the "Bush Years"?

So, the Bush adminstration makes this guy feed lies to the public and then throws him under the bus. For this he should be loyal at all costs, including his intergrity? Only in the Repubs world where choice is a bad word.

Many people detest Scott for his Bush years, he was a young, true believer. I've taken some flak for defending him, but I'll do it any time. Karl Rove played this kid like a fiddle and then hung him out to dry. Scott lost his faith in Bush and crew during the Plame outing. The popular accusation is that he only wrote his book "for the money". He's not going to retire off of the income that book generates. On the other hand, if he'd swallowed his pride and played the GOP game, he'd have shared in the spoils with Rove and the rest of them.
Nope, Scott speaking out was a lose/lose situation. He's pretty much dead to the right and, as you can read on this thread, he'll never be fully embraced by the left.
Yes, it took him a bit of time, but his better angel finally spoke out. If we can't find it in our hearts to forgive this man his past and accept his honest endorsement of Barack Obama, then we're no better than the right wing that we oppose.

I'm with you. I could always see the torture in his eyes while he was trying to defend the stupidity of the Bush administration, not like Snow or Perino who could do it with a straight face and without an ounce of conscience. I have new respect for Scott McClellan.

The news that Scott McClellan has endorsed Obama reminded me of the stinging jibe originally aimed I believe at John Connolly. "By this act he has simultaneously raised the mean IQ of both parties."

McClellan is just angry with Bush for some reason. I wonder where this man's heart truly is?

Let's give the man the benefit of the doubt and assume his heart is above party affiliation in this dire situation.

And who ISN"T?
I think its more important that he's seen the light.

Scott, up yours. You''d sell your mother into white slave trading to save your hide. Becoming a moral and upright person late in life is repugnant. Go away.

I disagree. Don't bash a person who has seen the light and is now trying to make amends. Even if he has a secondary motive to help his book sales, it takes some nerve to back Obama after you served as press secretary to the Satanic Bush White House.

We'll take everyone's vote. R, D or I, if your ship is sinking, we'll pick
you up and welcome you aboard. That's how we play.

Nice sentiment. That is what the Dem's policy really is. Not the, 'Oh we have an out of date life preserver, throw him that and hope for the best', philosophy of the Repubs.

That might be true, but I won't ever bash a person for working to improve the choices he/she makes. This is a guy who did a lot of harm by not whistleblowing as soon as he could have. the way I see it, he owes it to America now to do something right. and by right, I mean left. ;)

"Becoming a moral and upright person late in life is repugnant."

So, in your world, no one should seek to right their past wrongs? No one should learn from life experiences, or mistakes? No one should have the courage to admit that they question their past decisions and have changed their minds based upon what they've learned "later in life?"

We're the party of inclusion, tolerance, and fair mindedness, not the morality police -- that position's been taken for awhile, and frankly, we don't want it. Please, let's not lose sight of who we are.

It is so amazing how important this election is to this country. The Goldwater children, McClellan, Powell. This goes to show how far Barack Obama has come. OBAMA 08

I just love all the republican endorsements! Thanks, Scott. How many more are going to jump ship?

Slightly off topic, but I am concerned about the relatively slow fund raising for Obama for the first two weeks of October. 36 mill. does not seem like a lot after what he brought in in September. We can't afford to let our foot off the gas now. I just donated again, even though I am getting pretty broke. I encourage others to do the same. Thanks.

So, I wonder if Rush and George Will will claim the only reason McClellan is supporting Obama is because he's black, too.
