Miss Virginia Offended By McCain Campaign Comments

They've done it. The McCain campaign has gone and pissed off Miss Virginia.

When McCain senior adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer divided Virginia into the DC suburbs and "real Virginia," Kristi Lauren Glakas felt extremely disappointed. Glakas, a recent three-time Miss Virginia title holder and whip-smart University of Virginia scholarship honor student, said the comments were divisive.

"What offended me and made me sad about those comments," said Glakas, a resident for many years in northern Virginia, "is that I've been to every county, every part of this state. What's best about Virginia is its diversity. The people, the geography. We have every class, every race, an amazing immigrant population... Virginia is the birthplace of America. To say that part of Virginia is not part of the real America is just offensive."

I'm offended twice-fold: McCain is usually offensive; beauty pageants are also offensive.

Now, if we invested as much attention into science fairs and the intellectual pursuits of young Americans, we could openly laugh at people like Sarah Palin who think the Earth is younger than John McCain.

But seriously, generally, beauty queens are expected to be publicly apolitical. So, for this young woman to publicly state her views says a lot about how bad the McCain campaign really is. And says a lot about the quality of students UVA admits (a little bias here - my son is a first year!) and the quality of education at this great university.

I had a sad moment for Hillary the other day when she said (paraphrasing) that nobody should

'assume' anything .... a lesson she learned the hard way, to be sure!

Hillary understands that while a candidate can be the frontrunner for a long time, at the end

of the day, all that really counts, is the VOTE .... it would be a shame if Obama supporters

took victory for granted, and stayed home on November 4.

Kristi, We, all the "NOT Real Americans", understand very well what a comment like
"NOT Real Virginia" mean and how disappointing and divisive it is. Just think of
it this way the GOP with their NOT REAL comments, have united us by dividing
us from them. That's a good thing.
