NY Times:

Hyperbole is the currency of presidential campaigns, but this year the nation's future truly hangs in the balance.

The United States is battered and drifting after eight years of President Bush's failed leadership. He is saddling his successor with two wars, a scarred global image and a government systematically stripped of its ability to protect and help its citizens -- whether they are fleeing a hurricane's floodwaters, searching for affordable health care or struggling to hold on to their homes, jobs, savings and pensions in the midst of a financial crisis that was foretold and preventable.

As tough as the times are, the selection of a new president is easy. After nearly two years of a grueling and ugly campaign, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois has proved that he is the right choice to be the 44th president of the United States.

-------Thank you NYT.

-------My sentiment exactly, Senator Barack Obama for NEARLY TWO YEARS has been in a grueling and ugly campaign, and EVERY SINGLE TIME HE CAME OUT AS A WINNER.

------WHAT IS MORE INTERESTING IS THAT THE-STREET-SMART & DUMBEST WOMAN ON EARTH PALIN, WHO HAS BEEN ON THE CAMPAIGN FOR A LITTLE OVER ONE-MONTH, SAYING THAT SENATOR OBAMA HAS NOT BEEN TESTED, ALSO IGNORING HIS 12 YEARS IN THE STATE SENATE AND 4 YEARS IN US SENATE

While this is not surprising, I was very pleased to read the editorial this morning in the NYT. It was very well and thoughtfully written, and it clearly explained why we need Obama in the White House!

The NYT opined that McCain was "running a campaign on partisan division, class warfare and even hints of racism" and all the talking heads start defending McCain - he did not play the race card, he did not bring up Rev Wright etc. But it simply betrays their narrow biased views - the racism hinted at was not against Obama it was anti-Arab racism, linking all Arabs with terrorism etc. As far as my values are concerned this is still racist.

The fact that the NYT is supporting BHO is no more surprising than its bonds getting the highly coveted status of becoming junk bonds. Does the NYT usually wait to this late in a race to endorse? The Chi Trib scooped the NYT on endorsing BHO.
Who knows Sam Zell may do a leveraged buy of the NYT after he unloads the Trib & other Trib properties? Melt-down or not Sam can make a few cents selling the real estate Trib properties own. Selling off the NYT's property could be profitable to an operator like Sam. His Rupertship could invest in the NYT's property & make money on a longer term than Sam holds property.

NYT's debt rating is now "junk", just like the paper.

The New York Times has just been reduced to junk. Its readership has been dropping like a rock. It's great for wraping fish not much else.

I'm so happy to hear that the NYT has endorsed Obama, although their admiration of the man was already obvious (Who could blame them?).

No your kidding a left wing fish wrap endorses Obama really? Who circulation has been declining and who has been laying off and stock is down. The NYT has been cheer leading the progressive movement without any regard for the truth or what is best for the country actively routing against the troops.I read the local wrap for the sports I read the WSN FOR THE TRUTH I hope NYT fails but I am sure the Government will bail them out................. Why we already have PBS?

circulation is declining because of online readership.

Online readership doesn't equal, the amount of advert's sales from the newspaper. so online won't stop it fall.

I beg to differ, I don't think it was such a shoo-in all along. Before Steve Schmidt's famous anti-NYT rant and declaration of war against the gray lady, this endorsement was up for grabs. The NYT endorsed Hillary in the Democratic primaries, and McCain for the Republican. Like many NY Hillary loyals, it took them a while to accept her defeat. And for a while it seemed that McCain, with whom by the way, they've had a 25 year love affair, just like most of the media had with him, before they started seeing he was not the same as he once used to be, was still their favorite. If the McCampaign hadn't screwed this one up too, with their own words, who knows?
In the end, they endorsed the best candidate anyway.

Take a look bro. Right wing publications like the NY Post have been experiencing readership declines also. All newspapers have. The NY Post looses gobs of money every year, but Rupert has his media empire to offset the losses.

You're ranting based on your ideological perspective, not on the facts. You seem to have a problem grasping the reality that your candidate has run a despicable campaign and that most of us are sick of these tactics. Besides, if it's not worth anything more than a fish wrap then why do you have your panties all a-twist over who they endorse?

I printed out the NYT piece for my husband to give to his carpool buddy. I am not giving up on someone who didn't seem to be able to make up his mind. He didn't do any research, just listened to MSM every day, which is enough to make anyone indecisive. He said yesterday he has settled for McCain, but it's not over till it's over, so......happy reading, Jerry.

Here's a piece, written by Mark Morford - San Francisco Chronicle - that adds perspective:

It's the simplest, clearest, well written, and effective newspaper endorsement I"ve read so far. The stark contrasts between the candidates and the issues, is expressed in such an elementary, yet powerful way, that I'd recommend this as reading to all undecided voters, and maybe some intellectually honest right wingers.

Awfully late to the party - what took them so long?

What a wonderful endorsement, coming from the NYT. Its assessements are extremely accurate and I hope that everyone, especially the extreme right wing will read it and use common sense and judgement concerning this election.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08.

I wouldn't expect the right wing to give any weight to the NYT endorsement. In their minds, it only reinforces their belief that the NYT is the worst of the "liberal media", who are all in the tank for Obama..
