Denver Post:

Less than two weeks until the presidential election, Democrat Barack Obama has pulled even with Republican John McCain among rural voters in battleground states, according to a new bipartisan poll.

This may indicate a significant hurdle for McCain because Republicans, in order to overcome Democratic registration numbers in urban areas and close contests in the suburbs, generally need to win a large share of rural voters to take the presidency.

From NYT:

Dukakis Lead Widens, According to New Poll
Published: July 26, 1988

In the aftermath of the Democratic National Convention, the party's nominee, Michael S. Dukakis, has expanded his lead among registered voters over Vice President Bush, the probable Republican nominee, according to a Gallup Poll.

This was among the findings of a national public opinion poll of 948 registered voters conducted late last week for Newsweek magazine by the Gallup Organization. The telephone interviews took place on July 21, which was the last night of the convention, and on the night after that. Fifty-five percent of the 948 registered voters interviewed in the poll said they preferred to see Mr. Dukakis win the 1988 Presidential election, while 38 percent said they preferred to see Mr. Bush win.

The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Fantastic news! If this poll holds up, McCain is TOAST! A GOP candidate simply cannot win without a HUGE chunk of the rural vote to off-set the Democratic advantage in urban and suburban areas. Even a lead of 10 points in the rural vote is pathetic for a GOP candidate and spells doom in November!

Of course, McCain hasn't helped himself any by constantly dissing the farm bill (he decries the cost, but doesn't seem to have a clue about what kinds of useful and popular programs are covered, nor does he seem to possess the slightest inkling of where food comes from or the economics of food production). In the first debate I remarked that McCain had undoubtedly lost my home state of Iowa when he said (quite bluntly) that he'd end ethanol subsidies. Though here, I actually agree with him, but the reality is, it's simply political suicide to dis ethanol in the middle of the corn belt. These latest poll numbers, therefore, are no surprise. Way to go, McDoofus!

General Powell was a transformational figure-the Bush's had great faith in him and he went very far and he probly could have been VP and maybe the first black president as a Republican.

This is what I have been waiting for.

Rural America looks to the future, to what they believe, to what they hold dear and what they will defend with their lives, but they do not do it without thought of their neighbors.
They do not shout against their fellow countrymen, but speak respectfully to those who disagree. Freedom of speech is not discerned by volume, but by content.
The "American Way" is not a seen as a list of political positions, but as an ideal that is worthy of struggle to obtain.

These are the quiet voices across this great nation who, on November 4th, will speak, not with words, but with their votes. They do so not to promote one man over another, but to promote the dreams they seek for their children, their neighbors and their fellow Americans.

The only thing we ask in return is to be heard and not have our dreams betrayed.

Rumor has it if Barrack wins-Bin Laden will turn himself in. Peace and love will break out all over the world. Barrack could be President of the World within four years!

We are one America-people like Ayers, Wright, and Resko are great Americans. Middle America better get use to them if Obama wins. Ayers should be Sec of Education.

I agree with General Powell - Obama is a transformational figure and will bring instant respectability around the world - we as a Nation must elect this man!

In 2004 I was telling people that this was the most important election in their lifetime - that we could recover from 4 years of Bush, but another 4 years of Bush may take generations to fully recover. Obama is just the man to do this!
