The "Saturday Night Live" costume designer Wednesday night revealed the struggle he had in dressing Sarah Palin: she wanted to wear nicer clothes than they had picked out for her, reflecting the new image she has carefully constructed on the campaign trail.

While Palin's transformation from hockey mom to fashion plate has raised eyebrows, her "SNL" character, played by Tina Fey, has remained firmly in the red jacket. And according to Women's Wear Daily's Irin Carmon, "SNL" costume designer Tom Broecker said Wednesday night that dressing Palin for last Saturday's cameo required a compromise:

Of Palin, Broecker said, "In speaking with her, I had to get her to understand why she needed to wear the same thing as Tina [Fey]. We had gone off and created it for the first time a month ago, a look we identified as Sarah Palin. She had moved on in her own image of herself. I said, 'I know you've moved on you're wearing tighter clothes, more black but this is the character of Sarah Palin.''

The compromise, he said, was Palin returning in her own clothes the second time she appeared on the show to cheer on Amy Poehler's Palin-themed rap.

Sarah Palin dressed in red for the opening skit (per "SNL" wishes):

Then, later, Sarah Palin dressed in black (the compromise):

Sarah Palin went to such lengths today in Florida to inform people of how "frugal" she was talking about her favorite consignment store in Alaska (where her pink Pepto Bismol hued jacket apparently came from..) and talking about her $35 dollar wedding ring, that she doesn't wear because it hurts when she's shaking hands, and the native Alaskan earrings that she was wearing today at the rally. Such detail on shopping cheap from someone who wanted "better clothes" on Saturday Night Live just a week before.

Seems Sarah was majorly enjoying her expensive clothes and makeup makeover until the press got wind of the cost and started pointing the finger back at her. Now, ALL OF A SUDDEN Sarah Palin shops on the clearance rack and she wants to make sure EVERYONE KNOWS IT.

Please. Nobody's buying what you're trying to sell. It's really time for you to SIT DOWN.

The reason why it is so easy to imitate the character of Sarah Palin is that the "character of Sarah Palin" is in itself an invented fake persona to begin with. Nobody in Alaska speaks with that kind of fake hick country accent: "We're goin' to be shakin' and fixin' the economy" (an authentic quote!).

Yep, Alaska just baked her:

(Alaska's largest paper just endorsed Obama...)

So much for her support even in her home state.

I'm not defending Sarah Palin but after seeing her before clothes I certainly can understand how a shopping spree on the RNC would be enticing. I can't turn down Neimans or Saks..if you get a taste of that you can't go back...easily. If yall think she's going to give those clothes to charity you are crazy!

And if she by some long shot does, I hope and pray they tell us WHERE and WHEN because I want everything. From the suits to the Cole Haan boots to the Louis Vuitton purses and the Bally pumps..give me give me give me!

I'm a fashionista..and even though I really don't like Sarah Palin...have you ever been to Saks? Tried on those clothes..felt the quality of the materials, stitching? I can't afford most of that stuff but to actually be able to leave the store with the really high end stuff? NO WAY she's giving it to charity...unless it's SP Alaska Hockey Moms Association..lol.

Palin did not go to the stores. The clothing was brought to her in her hotel room. That means it was off-the-rack, possibly with a little quick tailoring on site, possibly not. To me, she looks like she did before the RNC blew $150K on her, with everything sized down a bit.

I am sure that you can present irrefutable sources, a link would be nice, that states your claim.

Someone wrote that despite the high price tag Palin still manages to look unsophisticated and trashy. I completely agree.

Grace, poise and style is not something that can't be found on any rack no matter how high end the store.

Sounds like your into names more than anything. Saks is too stuffy imo. Show me the Barneys!

I ... can't tell the difference between the suits. I even thought she looked nicer in the red one, if I had to pick. So ... really? I know I don't fall under her "real America" net, but having a fit about a business suit (because cheap or expensive, they're still just business suits) doesn't seem very "real" to me.

So I guess the Bridge to Nowhere will end up being a Bridge to TV talk show land?
Worked for Huckabee.
Maybe she can do a show for Beauty Queen Wannabes and help them improve their pageant walk and wave....about her speed.

She is used to having finer things now. Think about it. McCain needed her and brought her to his ticket. She wasn't picked for her intellect, it was for the appeal. She is the eye candy to distract from lack of substance. Any guy will tell you, eye candy costs money. So she probably wanted NBC to pony up something designer. She feels like John, NBC needs her more they she needs them.
11:27 PM on 10/25/2008
The RNC ponied up $150,000 for her campaign wardrobe, which included her kids and husband.

You should never compromise who you are in order to please others. It's called having self-respect, and Sarah has the right the uphold whatever imagine she wishes to have for herself.

As for her appearance on SNL, it grossed the highest SNL ratings in the past 14 years! She was so calm and confident on the show. She did a terrific job, and there are talks of offers being made for her to have her own talk show. She'd be great, but I'd rather see her in the white house where she can make some real change.... :)
03:38 PM on 10/25/2008
What change would that be?

Has anyone noticed the state of the planet lately? Apparently not Sarah Palin. She can't accurately state what the VP does, but she can obsess about her SNL costume.

Please Alaska, come and get your governor! Though, now, you probably can't afford her!

It will be very interesting when she gets back. I want an explanation on the $17,000 in perdiem. She knew where she lived versus where the capital is, but charged us anyway. She is the biggest government money spender I have ever seen so I say bull hockey to all her talk about "small government." It is NOT true!
06:18 PM on 10/26/2008
They don;'t want her anymore.
