A new InsiderAdvantage/Poll Position survey shows the remarkable: Barack Obama could very well win the deep-red state of Georgia.

The Illinois Democrat, according to the poll, has a slight edge over John McCain -- by a margin of 48 percent to 47 percent. The findings represent an outlier from other public opinion surveys, though Democracy Corps had the race extremely tight just a few days ago. The attention they are garnering is driven as much by the novelty as by a sincere belief that Obama could pull off the upset.

But from a strictly numerical standpoint, political observers shouldn't be all that shocked if the Democrats flips the Peach State. The data certainly lines up in Obama's favor.

The population in Georgia, according to the 2005 U.S. Census estimate, breaks down roughly as follows: 61.5 percent white, 30 percent African-American, and 6.5 percent Hispanic.

But the political map has, traditionally, been different. In 2004, the Georgia voting public consisted of roughly 3,280,000 individuals who broke down as follows: 70 percent white, 25 percent African-American, and 4 percent Hispanic.

Those dynamics led to a fairly easy victory for George W. Bush. The president took 76 percent of the white vote, 12 percent of the black vote, and 56 percent of the Hispanic vote en route to winning the state by a margin of 58 percent to 41 percent.

Flash forward four years and every change in Georgia's demographics appears to be favoring Obama. The Hispanic vote, which is growing in the state, is trending his way. The white vote is still predominantly Republican, but McCain's trouble with the base suggests he won't match the success that Bush enjoyed. And African-Americans are expected to go to the polls in record numbers.

So what does this mean in practical political terms? A Democratic friend does the math:

The big question is not if African-Americans' share of the electorate will increase, but by how much and what that will do to the share of the electorate made up by whites. The potential electorate could look as follows.
Whites: 64 percent African Americans: 31 percent Hispanics: 5 percent

Let's say McCain gets 71% of the white vote, Obama 26%, and [Third Party candidate] Bob Barr 3%, which is reasonable and perhaps a bit cautious on Obama's and Barr's shares. Then there is the Hispanic vote, which favored Bush in 2004 but nearly everyone has now given Obama roughly 2-1. Meanwhile, let's put Obama's support among African-Americans at 95%, which I think is reasonable.

The end result -- if one assumes the same number of voters that showed up four years ago (3,280,000) come to the polls next week -- would be as follows:

Obama would end up with 49.39 percent of the vote (approximately 1,610,000 votes) McCain would end up with 48.64 percent of the vote (approximately 1,590,050 votes)
This is, to be sure, the most optimistic scenario that Democrats can imagine. Matt Bocian of Democracy Corps says that in all likelihood, the African-American vote will hover somewhere between 26 and 27 percent, even with record turnout. One must consider that a portion of that group isn't of age to vote. And without an accompanying drop in McCain's support among whites, Obama could fall short of the upset.

Still, Georgia should be a state to watch on November 4th. Throughout the Democratic primary, pollsters consistently underestimated Obama's tallies in southern states, despite pegging Hillary Clinton's numbers accurately. In Georgia, for example, Obama's support jumped from 50 percent in early February to 66 percent when the vote took place, while Hillary Clinton stayed roughly at 30 percent.

In addition, the Obama campaign has done absolute yeomen's work in reaching out to and registering African-American voters. More than 400,000 newly registered voters were reported between January 1st and September 30th, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution; 164,859 of those voters are African-American, 176,570 are white.

If African-Americans can defy pollster expectations and go to the polls at a level approaching 30 percent while McCain's support among white voters hovers around 70 percent, it could portends a very close election in Georgia and, potentially, an Obama win.

I live in Atlanta (Buckhead neighborhood) and the early voting turnout has been impressive. People waited for hours in the pouring rain and temps hovering in the 50s (cold by GA standards in October) on Friday. Pundits and polls have underestimated the Obama vote in Georgia.
I have cast my vote for Obama and I continue to hold out hope that the early voting trends continue. We need to turn the Obama vote out in these record numbers. The only thing missing to turn Georgia blue this election is Obama himself. Obama needs to come here, make an appearance at a rally and speak to the masses. I would like be a part of history too and someone on his staff needs to get him here and collect our 15 electoral votes.

I concur. I have been making phone calls in Georgia and have been struck by how many white older rural voters are supporting Obama. There are many here in Atlanta working very hard for him. It would be wonderful and amazing if he could make one rally here before Nov. 4.

There is an Obama rally today at Mableton Amphi Theatre 3PM - 8PM. Maybe Obama will get there ? I am not sure.

McCain must think ALL Americans are out of touch with reality as he is ...

I mean seriously, who else has the nerve to say, "Forget that I have no new policies. Forget that I plan to continue ALL the failed policies of the past 8 years and even double down on some. Forget that my judgment and temperament are not befitting of a President. Just vote for me because I can lift a pen to stop the Democrats from passing Bills ..."

Now if that is not the dumbest argument for President designed for the dumbest members of the American Population, I do NOT know what is ...

Vote the Bums OUT ! ...

It would make my Georgia ex-pat heart so proud to see it go for O - and I'm far from alone in feeling that, too.

I continue to marvel at the ground organization Obama has built. Offices everywhere, registration drives, voter education, court challenges nipping voter suppression in the bud, phone calling, neighborhood canvassing, events, huge donor base, consistent message, no drama, strong leadership. Not to seem too gushy here, but this man really has rewritten the American political handbook. He and Michelle grew up middle class, but without much money, worked hard and became successful. They did everything right, and now they are doing everything right during this election. I will be very surprised if he doesn't win by a substantial margin in both popular and electoral votes. By the way, my wife and I turned in our early ballots in person today. Have you voted yet? Do it early - keeps the cheating down.

Agreed.

I voted early today in OHIO. When you do so, it's on a paper ballot. Can't fudge the computer programming on those...

I live in Cleveland, and the Board of Elections center for early voting was jam-packed, a mere 30 minutes after it opened.

They have several parking decks allotted for overflow, which were filling up fast. I had to walk 10 blocks--no problem, though. Many walked over bridges and crumbling streets to get us to this place today...

I say on CNN yesterday, over 50,000 new voters have been purged. I saw a black college student from Boston, now living in Georgia, with a letter saying she could vote because she was not an American. Watch the states with republican governors and secretaries of state. We have got to do something about voters suppression is black neighborhoods.

That's another good reason to vote early, if possible, so there will be enough time to contest the intimidation. Unfortunately at some places we are not in Kansas anymore. It looks more like in Zimbabwe. Vote early, please!

I use to live two hours from Atlanta. AtlantaPeach you know better. Why don't you move in the rural area in Georgia if you feel that harshly because you know and I know Atlanta and the surrounding area of Georgia is chocolate city. When you add other nationalities that are also votiing for Obama it give him a bigger advantage that's why the state is a toss up. But what I can't understand is why West Virginia is a toss because per CNN McCain leads Obama by 1% and we know what up in that state.

Now you're in my territory, and I am here to tell you that this state is not going for Obama. People in the South may say they're undecided, but that isn't true. You can count the undecided voters in the McCain column. We know about corruption in Atlanta...we had it with Andrew Young, Maynard Jackson and Bill Campbell, all very glib, light-skinned black men with fine educations, successful, but once they were in power they did not live up to their promise. Bill Campbell just finished his federal prison sentence. Maynard was never prosecuted because he worked out a deal. Young stashed lots of money in Swiss accounts and had to leave his position as Ambassador to the UN. And then we have Howell Raines, head of Fannie Mae, who cooked the books, took $90 million and was instrumental in bringing on this economic crisis. Oh, and lets not forget Jefferson who stashed thousands of dollars in his freezer. Just you wait. You'll see what you obama nuts have wrought on this country.

Do you even know what a non-sequitur is?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:07 AM on 10/25/2008

Yes, if you look at Georgia's history, or that of any state in the South, and you'll find that the vast majority of political corruption and crime has come from Black politicians. What was the word Westmoreland used? Oh, yeah...

Uppity. It's the uppity black folks that have caused all our problems.

Sheesh...

"You'll see what you Obama nuts have wrought on this country". Sounds like you are conceding the election to Obama. I lived in Ga all of my life, and it's good to see the paranoid (They are going to break into your house and kill you) types still live there. Wonder why I moved.....

I've always said that the most probable way to an Obama victory in Georgia is to see how many votes that Bob Barr takes off McCain, but with the way McCain has conducted his campaign lately some moderate voters may swing Obama's way.

All that is needed to clinch the state would be for Obama to make one appearance here before election day. Clinton came in the last week of the 1992 campaign and won the state, albeit by a small margin but he did win it, Obama can do the same. COME ON DOWN, BARRACK. THE DEEP SOUTH NEEDS TO SEE YOU!!!!!!

Get ready to for the "Obama effect" this election.

Let's look at some of the polls before the primary contests (averages from Pollster) and the results after the election.

I'll call it the "Obama effect" and did it for the battleground states. I added GA for this article.

Poll/Results
New Hampshire Obama by 6/ Clinton won by 3. Obama effect -9.
Ohio Clinton by 9/ Clinton won by 10. Obama effect -1.
Virginia Obama by 22/ Obama won by 28. Obama effect +6.
Georgia Obama by 14/ Obama won by 36. Obama effect +22.
Colorado Clinton by 10/ Obama won by 34. Obama effect +44.
Wisconsin Obama by 7/ Obama won by 17. Obama effect +10.
New Mexico Clinton by 5/ Clinton won by 1. Obama effect +4.
Nevada Clinton by 7/ Clinton by Clinton won by 6. Obama effect +1.
North Carolina Obama by 7/ won by 15. Obama effect +8.
Indiana Clinton by 4/ Clinton by 1. Obama effect +3.
Pennsylvania Clinton by 8 Clinton won by 9. Obama effect -1.
Missouri Obama by 1/ Obama won by 1. Obama effect 0.
Florida Clinton by 24/ Clinton won by 17. Obama effect +7.

If you noticed the polls were either right on or Obama over performed save for New Hampshire where Clinton cried. So McCain just needs to cry to counter the POSITIVE Obama effect.

Atlanta news stations tonight are reporting people waited in the rain and cold THREE HOURS today to vote! The film is unbelievable! Traditionally, in the South, the Republicans turned out but not the Democrats when weather got this bad. Senator Obama has turned that upside down and it's pure joy seeing it! WOW! Obama-Biden '08
