What's Your Reaction?

Terrorist strikes on four American cities. Russia rolling into Eastern Europe. Israel hit by a nuclear bomb. Gay marriage in every state. The end of the Boy Scouts.

All are plausible scenarios if Democrat Barack Obama is elected president, according to a new addition to the campaign conversation called "Letter from 2012 in Obama's America," produced by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family Action.

The imagined look into the future is part of an escalation in rhetoric from Christian right activists who are trying to paint Obama in the worst possible terms as the campaign heads into the final stretch and polls show the Democrat ahead.

Although hard-edge attacks are common late in campaigns, the tenor of the strikes against Obama illustrate just how worried conservative Christian activists are about what should happen to their causes and influence if Democrats seize control of both Congress and the White House.

"It looks like, walks like, talks like and smells like desperation to me," said the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell of Houston, an Obama supporter who backed President Bush in the past two elections. The Methodist pastor called the 2012 letter "false and ridiculous." He said it showed that some Christian conservative leaders fear that Obama's faith-based appeals to voters are working.

Like other political advocacy groups, Christian right groups often raise worries about an election's consequences to mobilize voters. In the early 1980s, for example, direct mail from the Moral Majority warned that Congress would turn a blind eye to "smut peddlers" dangling pornography to children.

"Everyone uses fear in the last part of a campaign, but evangelicals are especially theologically prone to those sorts of arguments," said Clyde Wilcox, a Georgetown University political scientist. "There's a long tradition of predicting doom and gloom."

But the tone this election year is sharper than usual and the volume has turned up as Nov. 4 nears.

Steve Strang, publisher of Charisma magazine, a Pentecostal publication, titled one of his recent weekly e-mails to readers, "Life As We Know It Will End If Obama is Elected."

Strang said gay rights and abortion rights would be strengthened in an Obama administration, taxes would rise and "people who hate Christianity will be emboldened to attack our freedoms."

Separately, a group called the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission has posted a series of videos on its site and on YouTube called "7 Reasons Barack Obama is not a Christian."

The commission accuses Obama of "subtle diabolical deceit" in saying he is Christian, while he believes that people can be saved through other faiths.

But among the strongest pieces this year is Focus on the Family Action's letter which has been posted on the group's Web site and making the e-mail rounds. Signed by "A Christian from 2012," it claims a series of events could logically happen based on the group's interpretation of Obama's record, Democratic Party positions, recent court rulings and other trends.

Among the claims:

_ A 6-3 liberal majority Supreme Court that results in rulings like one making gay marriage the law of the land and another forcing the Boy Scouts to "hire homosexual scoutmasters and allow them to sleep in tents with young boys." (In the imagined scenario, The Boy Scouts choose to disband rather than obey).

_ A series of domestic and international disasters based on Obama's "reluctance to send troops overseas." That includes terrorist attacks on U.S. soil that kill hundreds, Russia occupying the Baltic states and Eastern European countries including Poland and the Czech Republic, and al-Qaida overwhelming Iraq.

_ Nationalized health care with long lines for surgery and no access to hospitals for people over 80.

The goal was to "articulate the big picture," said Carrie Gordon Earll, senior director of public policy for Focus on the Family Action. "If it is a doomsday picture, then it's a realistic picture," she said.

Obama favors abortion rights and supports civil unions for same-sex couples, but says states should make their own decisions about marriage. He said he would intensify diplomatic pressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions and add troops in Afghanistan.

On taxes, Obama has proposed an increase on the 5 percent of taxpayers who make more than $250,000 a year and advocates cuts for those who make less. His health care plan calls for the government to subsidize coverage for millions of Americans who otherwise couldn't afford it.

One of the clear targets of this latest conservative Christian push against the Democrat is younger evangelicals who might be considering him. The letter posits that young evangelicals provide the margin that let Obama defeat John McCain. But Margaret Feinberg, a Denver-area evangelical author, predicted failure.

"Young evangelicals are tired _ like most people at this point in the election _ and rhetoric which is fear-based, strong-arms the listener, and states opinion as fact will only polarize rather than further the informed, balanced discussion that younger voters are hungry for," she said.

In an interview, Strang said there are fewer state ballot measures to motivate conservative voters this election year and that the financial meltdown is distracting some voters from the abortion issue. But he said a last-minute push by conservative Christians in 2004 was key to Bush's re-election and predicted they could play the same role in 2008.

Kim Conger, a political scientist at Iowa State University, said a late push for evangelical voters did help Bush in 2004, "but it is a very different thing than getting people excited about John McCain," even with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential pick.

Phil Burress, head of the Ohio-based Citizens for Community Values, said the dynamics were quite different in 2004, when conservative Christians spent some energy calling Democrat John Kerry a flip-flopper but were mostly motivated by enthusiasm for George W. Bush.

Now, there is less excitement about McCain than fear of an Obama presidency, Burress said.

"This reminds me of when I was a school kid, when I had to go out in the hall and bury my head in my hands because of the atom bomb," he said.

Leave it to the far right evangelical Republicans to give a beautiful religion like Christianity a bad name. Kind of on par with the Crusades. This is exactly what our founding fathers were... more >>

For 30 years Extremist Christians have held government and the people hostage. They use a conniving strategy that starts with a somewhat plausible argument, but once they get a platform, they pull out the rest of their demands.
They unsuccessfully tried this with "Intelligent Design", a cleverly disguised way of having "Creationism" taught in schools. They also tried to steal the moral high ground with a xenophobic christian organization called "The Moral Majority" - it was neither a majority, nor was it more moral than the rest of us. They are also abusing the"Pro-Life" label, since most of these fundamentalist zealots support capital punishment, they should really be called "Anti-Choice" or "Pro-Fetus".
They have condemned liberal education with the "Elitist" label. Under their prophets (Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts et al.), they operate large mind warping institutions masquerading as universities (Oral Roberts and Regent Universities). Monica Goodling, the high level Justice Dept. official implicated in the U.S. Attorney firing was a graduate of Regent. She was completely inexperienced in government and justice, yet she was placed in a power position for her christian beliefs.
The common thread with the extremist christian movement is that it distorts the truth, labels its opponents as enemies, and seeks to control the government through direct or indirect means. Religious organizations that seek to promote their agenda by blurring or crossing the line between church and state should be condemned and prosecuted to the full extent of the law !

Apparently they view Sarah Palin as a type of Esther that would restore religiosity to the white house.

They have even gone so far as to imply that Obama is a Communist. When they talk about Socialism. Well, wasn't the bailout Socialism? So why is it good for the rich, but a horrible thing for the poor, and middle class. On that point, what are our public schools, if not a social program? Which by the way Obama is preaching reform !! The other issue he is trying to reform, is healthcare. There is nothing wrong with a nation taking care of it's own. I doubt John, and Cindy McCain will ever have to worry about hospitalization, or long term care for a loved one. It's a disgrace, how many people are without proper medical care. And it's a disgrace how many children aren't all taught the same due to lack of funding. It's just a shame.

By the repub's current definition, wouldn't VA be socialism (I"m in favor of it)? Collecting taxes and spending them on no-bid contracts is socialism...And, how about spending tax dollars for churches to provide social services? Ahhhh, my...

I am happy to vote for Obama/Biden and dems down ticket. I hope and work for a dem landslide. But, I must say that I miss the Eisenhower-Goldwater-William Buckley brand of Republican that my father followed.

Remember them? The guys who believed in balancing the budget, small government, privacy and religious freedom? They didn't consort with feloms (Hello, Mr.Keating) or take bribes (Hello, Sen Stevens) or make advances on under-age young men (Mr. Foley) or hang out in gay connection public bathrooms (Sen Craig).

Moreover, they didn't believe in hidden government, no-bid contracts, deregulation of the financial industry, tax shelters that cheated the government and hasty, rash wars that are expensive in dollars and human resources...What happened to those values? Seems like Democrats are the only choice these days.

To be Christian, which literally means, "Christ like", and these people are not Christ like. Think about it, if Christ came to earth right now, what would these people think oif him? They would think he was a Middle Eastern radical, trying to ruin their American Christian way of life. Would they embrace him, and follow his teachings? Or still continue to Cherry pick the ones they want to follow.

I just don't get it!! McShameless has the backing of the majority of Evangelicals. He gain the support by appearing in as it were "Sheep's" clothing and waving an Anti-Abortion Flag. Underneath the "Sheep's clothing; which by-the-way have come undone, you can now see exactly what this man truly represents.

I don't know of any sincere Christian that seeks out the thrill of gambling, participates in fraudulent and deceptive slanders against the innocent, willful deception, extra-marital affairs-Adultry and just plain lying.

Wake up Evangelicals!!! Don't be deceived. Mc Cain makes a mockery of the Christian faith. It is our biblical mandate to go out into all the world and share the "Good-News" of the Gospel. This is the way to touch hearts and change individual lives. Voting for an immoral candidate waiving an Anti-abortion flag cannot bring change on an individual basis and will not release us from our biblical mandate.
Think about it.

The "Christian" right and Rush Limbaugh have much in common -- but both are in politics for money and personal power. This has nothing to do with religion, except that these people are in no way followers of what we know about Jesus. But these fascists have only been "powerful" for 14 years, since the "angry white male" election in 1994. The neoconservative movement has only been a GOP dictatorship for 14 years. Now the nation is turning progressive (otherwise known as "libbbbberrrrrul") and these folks (and Rush) are furious about losing their influence and their MONEY. THAT is what they are angry about; they're threatened by the loss of white male hegemony and "Christian" radicalism. Sock it to 'em, voters -- the Republicans can NEVER get most Americans' votes again after their incompetence and corruption, unless the GOP leadership exorcizes these people from any influence. Tax the churches! Bring back the FCC Fairness Doctrine!

As it said above, these people played a part in getting Dubya re-elected. I'm a Christian(as is Barack) and I strongly believe that at least 50 percent of these people will wind up in hell Jesus taught tolerance, and to love everyone. These people are a disgrace. The most bigoted, intolerant people in the world are wacko radical Christians. It is way past time for this country to go back to when there was no religious test for office. With all of these lies they're pushing about Obama, I guess the wacko right feels the commandment on not bearing false witness doesn't apply to them. Finally, I wonder how they feel about Palin having her demons exorcised by that witch-doctor. Not exactly something that my kind of Christianity smiles upon. Stupid people are bad enough. Loud stupid people who are also hypocrites are pathetic.

The right wing is betting all its remaining chips in this election. If Obama wins and all the ridiculous things they have been saying turn out not to be true, then they will have no credibility left whatsoever.

Anecdotal story.

I reunited (somewhat) with an old and dear fried of mine after 20 years. We'd drifted apart geographically, and so did the relationship. After a few talks and emails I realized that his Christian upbringing (I never nary a word of it when we were friends) was now a major force in his life. I thought, no problem; if he can accept my agnostic bent, I can accept his beliefs. Well ...

He's a born-again. Still, no problem though it's straining me a little bit (have to be honest). Then the Palin/McCain email propaganda starts. Odd thing, it turned to all Palin fairly quickly; it's as if McCain wasn't on the ticket. I didn't reply at first, then I sent links to alternative points of view, then the emails from his direction stopped.

Not very Christian, these Christians. Call 'em what you like; they're calling themselves Christians but not walking the walk, and I don't think it's up to non-Christians to clean up the mess. Someone under the big tent should really get cracking; it's going to splinter like a balsa wood staircase at this rate.

That's the No True Scotsman fallacy.

In fact, they insist they themselves are the True Christians.

The Christian movement we've come to know over the last thirty+ years was a union of the disenfranchised southern whites, (who left the Democratic party after Pres. Johnson signed civil rights legislation), The Republicans (who saw an opportunity to pick up an entire region that had voted traditionally democratic), and the Jerry Falwells of the country. It has always been as much about tribe as religion. As America becomes less white, and with a black president on the horizon, the attacks will become more vicious. The "good ole days" are gone and this Chjristian movement has evolved into these white folks "running to the hills."

The nerve! Obama wants to provide healthcare for our less fortunate fellow Americans! The Gall! How Un-Christian!!!

But let's ask that question posed by so many evangelicals: What would Jesus do?

Shame on anyone who calls himself or herself Christian, yet opposes caring for those who cannot afford to pay for a doctor. You astonish me.

Let em howl. At this point they are just preaching to the choir anyway. This will change no ones mind. The right wing is trying anything they can to stay in the game but moderates and progressives have already made their minds up. Let em rant and rage, it hurts them more than it helps their cause as it gives everyone a clearer view of just how rabid and dangerous they are. Vote!!
