The Wall Street Journal today rounds up the horde of prominent Republicans jumping ship to Barack Obama. Now one of John McCain's actual advisers has switched sides:

Charles Fried, a professor at Harvard Law School, has long been one of the most important conservative thinkers in the United States. Under President Reagan, he served, with great distinction, as Solicitor General of the United States. Since then, he has been prominently associated with several Republican leaders and candidates, most recently John McCain, for whom he expressed his enthusiastic support in January.

This week, Fried announced that he has voted for Obama-Biden by absentee ballot. In his letter to Trevor Potter, the General Counsel to the McCain-Palin campaign, he asked that his name be removed from the several campaign-related committees on which he serves. In that letter, he said that chief among the reasons for his decision "is the choice of Sarah Palin at a time of deep national crisis."

TPM has the press releases touting Fried's presence on the McCain campaign.

Republicans can NEVER tell the truth. That is why they are slipping. NO one trusts a liar.

It appears Mr. Fried and Mr. Powell are voting for "America" and not party loyalty. For far too long politicians believe the electorate have forgotten that government is by the people and for the people and not for a select few.

You are so right "cher2". Both Mr. Fried and Colin Powell are true "Mavericks", by standing up to their party for what they believe is best for our country. That's Barrack Obama.

I see my logical post was already deleted. What's the matter moderators? As Jack Nicholson says, "you can't handle the truth. Good by losers.

Even if that happened, there would still be that nutcase 30-35% of the population, living in denial, who would disregard the endorsement.

Well, I'm signing off so I won't read any more of your stupid comments. All bashing and not one common sense argument. Typical O-baaaaah-ma sheep. Good night and God help America against a very vile evil man that allows a baby to be born up to the shoulders and sucks the brains out until the skull crushes. God help us against the man that allows taking a baby that survived an abortion to go in a room and die, he wants to punish hard working people by taking their money and giving it to others that aren't so deserving, he will appoint liberal judges that will take the constitution and misconstrue it. God help us against the man that has ties to an American terrorist, Saul Alinsky, Raines Johnson. I could go on and on but the O-baaaaah-ma sheep think they are all lies. If that was McCain I was talking about you guys would be disgusted with him. God protect us and America from a very vile evil man. Wait, a real man wouldn't allow these horrible things happen to an innocent baby.

You obviously care deeply about abortion, but you are misrepresenting Senator Obama's position. Let me tell you that many of us who support a woman's right to control her own body rather than having the legal system tell her what to do, also want to help reduce the number of abortions that take place in America. I advocate classroom education so young people who are sexually active will know what the risks are and can protect themselves. Also, access to contraception should be easier.
As for tax policy, if you make less than 250,000 a year you will get a tax break. Obama believes in self-reliance; not hand outs for the lazy. He just wants to correct the giveaway to the rich that the Bush administration has been so good at and give the middle class a chance to regain some of the lost ground.
As for the Supreme Court, the judges Bush has appointed are radical conservatives, out of step with mainstream America, you will see that Obama will appoint moderates. Maybe they won't make you happy by repealing Roe v Wade, but neither will they use pretzl reasoning to hand elections to their ideological favorites.

If you keep an open mind you will see that the 'information' you have received was designed to whip up your feelings and win an election. Nothing more. President Barak Obama is no danger to you. Peace.

Alaska Rep. Calls for Probe Into 'Troopergate' Witness Tampering

In a new front for Gov. Sarah Palin’s “Troopergate” troubles, a top Alaska Democratic lawmaker has called on the state’s attorney general to appoint an independent investigator to probe whether operatives in Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign broke Alaska’s criminal witness-tampering laws.

I have no idea why people like Rudy Guliani and and Tom Ridge are damaging their future political career by stumping for the sinking titanic. Republicans are fleeing the ship like rats. Why do you think Mitt Romney isn't stumping for the old man?

Rudy has no future. He boasted too much and without any reason about his response to 9/11, when in fact he has not does anything positive.

But I believe we will have soon the 2-party system restored. There will be two parties:
1. Moderate conservatives + conservative democrats.
2. Progressive/liberal democrats.

I believe republicans will split because of the defeat: their party has been hijacked by extremists. Right-wing extremists (Bush-lovers) will go to margins, while good republicans will go into the (1) above.

The democrats will split, on opposite, as 'victim of success'. There will be too many of them, and they will input both to (1) and (2) above.

And this will be end of extreme-right empire, we will become gradually (I hope) closer to the civilized Europe.

It certainly seems like the GOP is splitting into two camps: (1) the Rove/Kristol/Hannity neocon/evangelical wing and the (2) Brooks/Powell/even George Will/Chris Buckley. The fissures are being manifested as the blame game has started with the latter group believing the party has been hijacked by extremists conveniently forgetting all of the apologetics offered by the latter group on behalf of the former group's policy views and political tactics.

once all the splitting is done, we can start discussing real ideas concerning real issues and hear different, yet valid opinions.

I liked this response to a Glenn Greenwald article titled 'What is happening to GOP electoral tactics' here: http://letters.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/10/22/anti_american/view/index2.html?show=all

“Most American's see this for what it is, pure and simple DESPERATION. This is the year the Republican Party destroys itself! Who knew there were so many benefits to supporting Sen. Obama!”

:-)
