Obama Personnel

Forget the election. With November 4 just days away and Barack Obama positioned to become the nation's first African American president, the question has begun to turn to: Who gets what?

Does former South Dakota Senator and Majority Leader Tom Daschle have the inside track to become the White House chief of staff (COS), or maybe William Daley, Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration?

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe could seek the COS post himself, and he has a lot of chits outstanding. Sources say John Podesta, a former COS to President Clinton and head of Obama's transition team, has indicated he does not want to go back to the same job, but some think he could change his mind if pressed.

If Obama wants to pick a close personal friend and trusted adviser for the job, he may look to Valerie Jarrett, an African American mover-and-shaker in Chicago who, in 1991 while deputy chief of staff to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, hired Michelle Robinson, Obama's wife-to-be.

The Chief of Staff choice may prove to be one of the most important Obama makes at a time when the country faces a severe economic crisis, and when newly enlarged Democratic majorities in the House and Senate will be pressing for approval of their special projects after eight years in the wilderness. President Clinton, who took office after 12 years of Republican administrations, picked a weak manager as his first chief of staff, Thomas F. "Mack" McLarty III, and many believe the choice contributed to Clinton's problematic first two years in office.

Senior campaign strategist and close adviser to Obama David Axelrod could, if he wants it, assume a parallel role in an Obama administration, but it is not clear that Axelrod wants to leave Chicago.

It's widely agreed that John Kerry would give up his Senate seat if offered Secretary of State, but does Obama want him? Kerry is keenly watching at least two potential competitors, Greg Craig, a top Obama foreign policy adviser, and Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar, who would bring bipartisanship to the Cabinet. Would Kerry take UN Ambassador? Richard Holbrooke is a possible, but not likely, choice at State, given the view inside the Obama camp that Holbrooke lost his shot in trying to persuade foreign policy types to sign up with Hillary instead of the Illinois Senator.

One source raised the question: "Is there a role for Tony Lake?" Lake put the Obama foreign policy team together but has said that his job ends on November 4, and that he wants nothing. Could Obama make him an offer --- like CIA director -- that he can't refuse? Lake was willing to take the job under Clinton, but withdrew in the face of Republican opposition in the Senate. Lake might also be tempted by the UN job, "although he has a second marriage and young kids."

Story continues below

Craig, Susan Rice, Samantha Power and a number of others are considered likely candidates for National Security Adviser. Craig and Rice have been speculated about for the UN.

Within days of winning, Obama is expected to announce his economic team. One theory is that he will try to calm the markets by appointing Larry Summers at Treasury, and Laura Tyson as his number two. Summers has a brilliant academic record and relevant experience, but he also has enemies, especially among women angered by his comments about female under-representation at the top levels of research science. Obama is known to be looking closely at Timothy F. Geithner, the respected president of the New York Fed, as another possibility for Treasury.

Obama has indicated that he will consider reappointing Henry Paulson at Treasury, but Paulson's performance has not been receiving high grades lately, diminishing this possibility.

The appointments Obama makes are not only the blood and guts of Washington gossip, but, more importantly, they are clear signals of the direction the new administration will take, reflecting the accuracy of the observation that "personnel is policy." For the Washington lobbying and special interest group community, appointments are crucial, determining success, access, and business.

A key test will be Secretary of Defense. Obama has indicated he is considering keeping Bush appointee Robert Gates. Such a move could signal that the new president wants Republican cover for a relatively quick troop withdrawal, or that he is acceding to pressure from generals on the ground to go slow on the promised pull-out. There are others on the Defense list, including Nebraska Republican Senator Chuck Hagel who would lend a bipartisan aura, and Thomas Pickering, a career foreign service officer who became Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs during the Clinton administration. Pickering, in the view of some Obama watchers, is a man of parts who, after making good money working for Boeing, could take over at the CIA, the National Security Agency, or become Director of National Intelligence.

Another man mentioned as a potential candidate in the Defense-National Security orbit is Richard Danzig, who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower, Reserve Affairs and Logistics under President Carter, and as Secretary of the Navy under President Clinton. Danzig has also emerged more recently as a Middle East expert.

A 'Class A' Cabinet post, Attorney General, could go to Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, or possibly to African American Obama adviser Eric Holder, or to Jamie Gorelick, considered a top-flight lawyer and a star at both the Pentagon and as Deputy Attorney General at Justice under Clinton. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has been mentioned as a possible AG, although sources in the state say that he has told them he wants to complete a first term and run for a second. Other AG possibles include Alabama Congressman Artur Davis and Chicago US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, who prosecuted the Scooter Libby CIA leak probe.

There has been talk that Napolitano could be picked as Secretary of Homeland Security, as there has been that former Indiana Congressman Tim Roemer, who sponsored legislation creating the Department and who later served on the 9/11 Commission, is in the running. Roemer has also been discussed as a possible head of the CIA.

Two unanswered questions are: Would Obama offer a Cabinet post to Hillary and would she take it. Most odds makers indicate the answer in likely to be no to both.

If Daschle does not make the cut for COS, he could be offered Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), according to yet another source. Additional prospects for the HHS post are Connecticut Representative Rosa DeLauro and Howard Dean, who is a medical doctor as well as the current Democratic Party chairman.

Two high-ranking Democrats in the House, Norm Dicks of Washington and George Miller of California, could be in the running for Secretary of the Interior; Miller has also been mentioned as a possible Education Secretary. Another politician with a shot at Interior is Former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles.

The list of potential Education Secretaries includes Joel Klein, New York public schools Chancellor, and Stanford's Linda Darling-Hammond.

While not as important as Chief of Staff, the White House Counsel has in many administrations played a crucial role, especially in fights with Congress over executive branch testimony and over access to information. Top campaign finance expert, Robert Bauer, who is a key Obama advisor and a widely admired legal advisor, may have an inside track for this job if he wants it, but he has told associates that he plans to remain outside the administration while providing advice to the political wing of the operation.

California Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has not ruled out serving in a Democratic administration and is viewed as a possible Secretary of Energy or as the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Another potential choice for Energy Secretary is Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey, although if Kerry were to get State, Markey might fix his attention on an appointment to Kerry's Senate seat.

Cassandra Butts, "a pal of Obama's at Harvard," could be a candidate for Housing and Urban Development or for the Education Department. She may have to fight off competition from a powerful interest group, the US Conference of Mayors, however. At least three current and former chief executives of major cities have been mentioned for HUD, including the District of Columbia's Tony Williams, Detroit's Dennis Archer and Atlanta's Shirley Franklin.

There could be some intense competition for the Labor Secretary spot, with Service Employees Institutional Union (SEIU) president Andy Stern, former Democratic House Leader Dick Gephardt, and former House Democratic Whip David Bonior looking at the post.

Among those under consideration for Transportation are Minnesota Congressman James Oberstar, chairman of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, a Hillary supporter in the primaries. Rendell has also been discussed as a possible Commerce Secretary, along with former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk and Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer has been mentioned for Agriculture, but sources say that coming to Washington could damage Schweitzer's appeal as a Western politician and his potential as a candidate for national office in the future. Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, who also backed Hillary in his state's caucus, is another prospect for the post.

A choice that would probably win widespread support would be the selection of former Georgia Senator Max Cleland, who lost both legs and one arm in Vietnam, to run the Veterans Administration. Many Democrats remain deeply bitter over Cleland's defeat in his 2002 re-election bid at the hands of Saxby Chambliss who ran an ad showing Cleland's face morphing into Osama bin Laden.

The prospects after November 4 for all of these competitors remain highly uncertain. One of the most consistent qualities of the Obama operation is that key players hold their cards close to the vest. From all outward appearances, Obama intends to make his appointments quickly and has reportedly already started the vetting process on 700 possible candidates for jobs at all top levels. Facing two wars and the threat of a brutal recession, Obama will have little leisure time after election day, when he will have to negotiate the tricky two-and-a-half-month transition process during which he will be the president-elect with an adversary still holding the powers of office.

Forget the election. With November 4 just days away and Barack Obama positioned to become the nation's first African American president, the question has begun to turn to: Who gets what? Does former ...

Obama has proved his talent for picking talent, so I'm not worried. But I do hope he gives State to Al Gore, and EPA to Barbara Boxer. Just my favorite American politicians.

I would love to see Senator Max Cleland be Secretary of Veteran Affairs. I cannot think of a more perfect choice for the position.

I do believe that hiring on a bunch of cast offs from previous administrations is not the way to make change. There are new brilliant folks out there in universities and industries who need to be tapped for these important positions. I can see having the old guys as part of a council of advisors but it is well time to make a new start here. Hire new guys (and I mean that in a gender, race, and religion neutral way).

Please, please No ARNOLD! I am a California State Employee and he is no friend of the people.

Example: the Calif Legislature would not pass the budget so Arnold tried to cut the pay of State employees to minimum wage...that's how he thinks.

How about Robert F. Kennedy Jr or Caroline Kennedy or Cuomo?

I'd rather have socialism for the poor than socialism for the rich like we have with Republicans.
Obama and the Left are called radical but we understand that government is needed to guard against the unbridlled greed of corporate America.

I realize they're both old white guys, but it would give me a lot of comfort to see either Andrew Bacevich or Chalmers Johnson get consideration for high level positions at State or DoD.

Also, Colin Powell for SecDef.

Think about it: former general, current reasonable Republican, black guy. Also, his name is on the only successful "doctrine" we've come up with since Vietnam. It's right up his ballpark, and he could totally rock it.

PeggyLee, did I read on one of your posts that you ARE black??? I would literally have to see you to believe it, and even then, I would question my own eyes if in fact it's true.

Nonetheless, black people can be as anti-black as some white people are. It's called self-hatred, and it's as destructive as the hatred of racism. It's destructive not only to the spiritual essence of the person or group of people to whom your hate is projected and exercised, but it also destroys your own spiritual essence. Therefore being anti-black or anti-white is not always defined by one's skin color; it's defined by what's in one's heart, by one's sense of self and sense of humanity. Your arguments against Senator and Michelle Obama are vacuous, unsubstantiated and irrational. So far, I have not read one argument that you've made that I would call objective and worthy of exploring. It's simply the same garbage talking points that we've all heard for the last two years, all of which have been debunked. But your particular response to Michelle's paper and your conclusion that she is radical and anti-white based solely on her thesis, merely exposes the source of your antipathy for all things Obama. As such, whether you are black or white, you need to examine yourself. Your problem with the Obamas is not external, it's internal!

Wow, this coming from the tolerant libs??

I am not part of the problem, it is the liberals of this country that get up every morning (or afternoon, in the liberals casse) and ask the question "what can my country do for me today?" instead of thinking "What can I do for my country?"

I read on this post earlier that you libs feel you will have a wonderful life is BO is elected...anyone with as simplistic view on life is rather silly but the larger point is anyone who thinks their life will be made wonderful by any politician or by any government is not the sharpest knife in the drawer....and that is the general feeling by libs, wait for government to "give me something" instead of going out and making it for yourself. Liberals are lazy and have no intention of doing anything for themselves, relying instead on the government handouts, and I for one, am sick and tired of this way of thinking. Just one more reason I am voting for John McCain instead of BO.

Obama has done so much to work toward uniting our nation, it is a time of transformation that everyone can be a part of.

Guys, it's fairly common for wingnut online propagandists to misrepresent themselves. Answer me this: how many times have you heard the following statements, followed by extreme right-wing screeds:

1) I used to be a Democrat, but this election...
2) I was a Hillary supporter, but now I'm for Palin because...
3) I'm undecided and was leaning towards Obama, until I found out...

It's a common tactic on the Internet. Don't fall for it. Here, we have no gender, no color, no religion and no nationality. Any argument are based on some claimed artificial personal characteristic is an invalid argument.

Remember the backwards "B" chick. Every time you chase down the fact, it turns out they were lying the whole time. Therefore, don't give an ounce of credence to anyone who makes unverifiable claims of any kind.

If it walks like a Republican and quacks like a Republican, then rest assured it's a Liar.

hehe...

i would encourage O-supporters to look at the ideological track record of left leaning policies. It's pretty grim. Don't go to Obama's site to do this, or dailykos... look for the debate on these policies from both sides. think for yourself

As far as the intellectuals go... i'm not terribly impressed with their ideas. Usually when their enlightened ideas don't work, they simply blame Republicans or the free market for the problem.

as smart as Obama may be... he does not understand market economics and the global benefit of tax cuts. Which i think is bad timing, considering where we are with the economy.

This is something I have to address.

I am an American and damn proud of it. I also happen to be black, and I know of struggle and sacrifice and what it takes to make it to the top. It hurts me to see a fellow African American--namely Peggy--willfully wrap herself in ignorance. When i consider what great African American Leaders like Martin Luther King have sacrificed so that our generation could have a chance it pisses me off when I see members of my own race squander that chance.

As Americans we must all hold true to the belief that we are our brohter's keeper, we are our sister's keeper. How is it that being intellectual and highly educated makes you anti-American? Why is it that a man can use family connections to move up ranks, committ adultry and marry into riches be considered an elite, but another man from a modest background who achieved the pinnacle of succees be called a traitor? How does that argument continue to hold up to this day?

Peggy I ask you to reflect and look within yourself and really ask...."Am I better off now than I was four years ago?" Can a man who was a failure at a naval academy really help steer this country out of economic disaster? Can a man who selected a highly unqualified VP really be trusted to make the right judgment?

Thanks bro, I just had to get that off my chest cause it burns me to see fellow Americans act that way.

Barack Obama once said:

"The choice in this election is not between regions or religion, or gender, it's not about rich vs. poor, young vs. old and it is not about black vs. white. This election is about the past vs. the future."

I would prefer if someone can tell me that they won't vote for Barack because he goes against their core beliefs in what they want in government and who they think represents their views on the constitution. I can respect a voter that can articulate that clearly for me. But someone that will attack his character and use that as a basis is downright ignorant. McCain and Palin combined have more questionable characteristics and characters around them than Obama, and all the 2008 democratic candidates combined.

I am not voting against McCain the person, i'm voting against the policies McCain has laid forth. They do not represent my view of government, nor do they address the one issue i care the most about Healthcare. I chose to become a physician because I want to serve my country and keep it healthy. John McCain's plan handicaps me and puts me at the mercy of the insurance companies.

George Obama has already spoken to the media and has stated that his living conditions have been blown out of proportion. You can find the interview online rather than rehash the crap that is spout out on Fixed Noise.

Secondly I can tell that you're lying because no one is safe from this. I have close friends who work for investment banks are finding it hard to make their payments, these were the same people making six figure incomes. People are losing their jobs everyday and there is less consumer spending so for you to claim you're better off is a complete lie. Unless you are making what the top 1% is making you're catching hell.

Now now, don't try to shoo the wingnut away. They're fun, and I think we should keep them around.

Example:

Personally, I can't wait until I can spend my whole day playing XBox and receiving government checks from the hardworking demographic. As we liberal intellectual elites are superior to them, we're clearly higher on the food chain and should be able to live off of their hard work. It's like wolves feeding on the caribou: the caribou do the hard work of finding food, and then the wolves take the nutrition from the caribou. They score lower on IQ tests, so they get to be the caribou. When our Socialist-In-Chief takes office, he'll restore the natural order to the American Economy.

See how easy? Now we get at least 20 more frothing-at-the-mouth posts from the wingnuts.

The Republicans never have clear strategy of governance, their only strategy is how to rig an election.

Bottom line: You guys are not the least bit interested in finding out anything more on BO, you are all convinced that he is "the One", because finding out anything else may further expose him as the radical he is, and that is what the libs fear most, exposing the real BO

Most Amerians already know of his radical views and friends, and that DID have an impact on him in a lotof people's minds....the libs can't risk more exposure right before the election....and NOT one of you libs have grown enough of a pair to admit this, event though all of you are thinking this very thing.

And again I post the question for the tr0ll that is peggyleg aka Richard Cranium - why are you ranting about these doctoral thesis' that are not available, when the real question is what is your choice - the so called straight talk express, hiding his medical records from the news media for? That is a vetting I am much more concerned about and that is critical if he were to become POTUS. McCain is hinding alot more that would affect his ability to govern this country than some papers the soon to be President Obama wrote while at Harvard.

I've posted this question 3 times now and you have yet to respond - so to me, your constant whining about these papers is moot.

And I have asked a least 4 times to all of you libs here on this site, and I have not gotten one straight answer as why the great BO will not authorize the release of any of his opinions he wrote while teaching at Harvard Law School. I am more than positive that this would show everyone of his very leftist way of thinking and governing, if he was ever to have the chance.

Medical records, he has not released his either, so John McCain is waiting for BO on this one, and I don't blame him. The libs were screaming about medical records and BO hasn't released his own medical records. If they REALLY wanted McCain to release his BO would have jumped at the chance and released his records, but that hasn't happened yet, either.

So what about all the opinions of BO? Radical thinking leftist liberal with very questionable friends and associates throughout his life, and won't release anything that shows his real opinion of America.

"... I have asked at least 4 times ... and I have not gotten one straight answer as why the great BO will not authorize the release of any of his opinions he wrote while teaching at Harvard Law School."

We don't know, Peggy!!! Is that straight enough? We don't know any more than you know why McCain won't release his medical records, which I would suggest, as a 72 year old man with a history of cancer, his medical records are a lot more relevant to the election of the presidency than Obama's school papers, especially with someone like Palin waiting on the sidelines!

What exactly do you mean about Obama's "real opinion of America?" Are you - as have Bachman, Sean and Palin - suggesting that because Senator Obama does not share your twisted worldview, that he's not "one of us" as Palin asserted, or that he emerges from a unique culture and the black experience, that he's somehow less American than you are. Senator Obama is the embodiment of our American values, in a way that you and others like you will never be. Questioning his patriotism is unprecedented in the history of our presidential elections, and those who do so are far more anti-American and anti-everything our democracy stands for than any label you attempt to attach to Senator Barack Obama.

You wrote: "And I have asked a least 4 times to all of you libs here on this site, and I have not gotten one straight answer as why the great BO will not authorize the release of any of his opinions he wrote while teaching at Harvard Law School"

Thank you for this new enlightenment! I just discovered from you that Obama taught at Harvard Law School. Stupid me thought he taught Constitutional Law at University of Chicago Law School and attended Harvard Law School. You are so bright with your facts. Thanks!

If you ask the right question, you will get the right answer! How can anyone answer a question that is based on a false premise and incorrect facts? You can ask the question a million times and you will still not get an answer, BECAUSE OBAMA NEVER TAUGHT AT HARVARD LAW SCHOOL. Give it a rest, you have lost the arguement!

It's been standard since the '70's to expect medical records for Presidential candidates. I've never heard of a requirement for Presidents to turn in all of their school homework. Maybe SCOTUS nominees, but not Prez candidates.

People based in the real world know it won't. Clinton couldn't appoint a Surgeon General who had once talked about masturbation.

We're going to be overrun by Marxists. Right.

Neither Sarah Palin nor her husband are veterans. Is service only sacrosanct when it is a Republican? It must be or why the Right's denigration of Kerry and Cleland?

Palling around with terrorists? See the AIP membership and G. Gordon Liddy for starters.

Abuse of power, violation of ethics, cronyism on the pipeline: Palin's governance.

Michelle Obama has written of the Black experience in America which must include references to racism( which persists to this day). She is married to a man who is half white and who is very proud of his mixed heritage. Being proud that you are African American does not make you anti-white
Peggy your posts always have a racial overtone. I guess that's why you feel that Palin, a limited, inarticulate ideologue is more qualified and more American than Obama.

Peggy we're sorry to burst your bubble, but the majority of us have read Michelle's paper. The Law Review President is the editor, who reviews and makes recommendations to the writers on how they can improve their articles before it is published. When you consider the ammount of people in that organization, you can then appreciate the work that Obama has done editing and ensuring the organization runs smoothly. (Wait isn't that executive and organizational experience)

also follow the Harvard Law Review very closely. I've read through the archives to research up on how Obama's tenure has been and the work others have done under his stewardship. If you wanted to know anything about his work, you can easily call the Law Review office and a representative will be more than willing to help you.

Editorial Office:
617-495-7889
617-496-5053 (fax)

Business Office:
617-495-4650
617-495-2748 (fax)

Rather than speculate, do some real research and you'll find that the information is there.

I have already tried calling the Harvard Law Review, and they have not been able to tell me where ANY of this is. I was told it was not available, at BO's request.
Strange, eh?

I spoke to them as well and got the same answser. And as I've said before my experience in academia is that unless you give permission for your work to be released no one can release it.

I still find it astounding that you would suspect that because he doesn't want to release his paper means he's hiding some liberal conspiray. That hogwash would not hold up in any court of law. The logic of your argument is becasue he doesn't release it means he his hiding something. That isn't the case, because you have no evidence to back your assertions. I have several thesis papers I chose not to have released in the public domian when i gained my masters in Biological Sciences, does that mean I have a hidden agenda?

Again you must really think before you arrive to such an illogical conclusion.

peggyleg aka Richard Cranium:

I'll flip the question: Why is it that the press can't go through McCain's health records and publish their findings - since this is crucial to his being POTUS - a thorough vetting as you will - strange no press was allowed to go through them in detail and publish those findings eh? Seems to me, McCain's health records are more important than a doctoral thesis you keep ranting about.

Your constant whining really deserves a wheel of Brie for effort.
