I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sarah Palin had a few memorable moments during her campaign stop in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday. But the most eye-opening of them all came, it would appear, when the Alaska Governor somehow drew a connection between Barack Obama's tax policy and an encroaching, nightmarish, communist government. The Illinois Democrat, she hysterically suggested, would, through his proposals, create a country "where the people are not free."

"See, under a big government, more tax agenda, what you thought was yours would really start belonging to somebody else, to everybody else. If you thought your income, your property, your inventory, your investments were, were yours, they would really collectively belong to everybody. Obama, Barack Obama has an ideological commitment to higher taxes, and I say this based on his record... Higher taxes, more government, misusing the power to tax leads to government moving into the role of some believing that government then has to take care of us. And government kind of moving into the role as the other half of our family, making decisions for us. Now, they do this in other countries where the people are not free. Let us fight for what is right. John McCain and I, we will put our trust in you."

That yarn goes well beyond what Palin and McCain have, to this point, been comfortable asserting: mainly that Obama is proposing economic socialism. But there are a few things to keep in mind here: the McCain-Palin ticket does not oppose a progressive tax system. In fact, back in 2000, the Arizona Republican said rich people paid more in taxes because they could afford to do so.

"I think the first people who deserve a tax cut are working Americans with children that need to educate their children," he said, "and they're the ones that I would support tax cuts for first."

More importantly, Obama's tax plans are less progressive than those in place during the Clinton years. In fact, the rates that people making over $250,000 would have to pay would be the same as during the 1990s -- a time definitely not marked by the absence of freedoms.

What scares me is someone making 50 million in 2007 and someone else making $28,000 in 2007, I wonder why Americans could not pay their mortgages? let's spread the wealth around.
It's more important to feed and house your family. The 50 million a year goes for extra houses and
extra cars and Neiman Marcus shopping sprees.

Here is a snippet of real life that is going to get Obama elected: Here in the Ozarks a police officer making the state minimum of 24K a year for risking his / her life is haranged ad nauseum by the owner of a 250K boat because somebody got on board last night and drank his liquor. Meanwhile the officer spouse is inline to get their family of fours food stamps. True story and disgusting

Republicans and conservatives in power, just like Fox News must think all America is full of sheep-like retards.

Are they really so arrogant to believe that we don't see that at every election, and every term with a Republican president or congressional majority, the taxes on the middle and lower class go up while at the same time the tax breaks for the rich and powerful increase?

Is there really anyone left on the planet who believes that "trickle-down" economics actually work for the vast majority? If so, I'd like to meet them and punch them in the face!

Perhaps if Palin and McCain ever had the gall to speak in front of people who don't agree with them as Obama does, they would see the gigantic folly inherent in almost all of their insane ideas. And would recognize that we already have socialism in this country, albeit for the rich only, while the rest of us struggle under the crushing weight of free market capitalism that is so unbalanced that most will never escape to a better economic position.

Working three jobs for decades with no option for retirement or savings is the legacy of Republicanomics, not the Democrats, and it would be wise for the people of this country to remember that, despite the fantasies that Palin, McCain, and all the other rich and powerful like to spew.

in all fairness, if you look at the people who watch Fox and support the GOP, that's an easy assumption to make...

Seriously, what's the big deal with "spreading the wealth around"? Isn't that what the tax and welfare system is for? So that those who have less in life can count on the government helping them, who, in turn, gets the funds to help through taxpayers who have more in life? I mean, you think about it, any system of government (anarchism excluded) is based on the principle of spreading the wealth around.

Republicans should seriously study their stuff more.

Republicans do not have the energy or capacity to think. They have zero intellect. Case in point is the McCain/Palin ticket.

She should start counting the days for return back to Alaska. She and her family have enjoyed all the perks - high end designer clothes and accessories, free private jet rides to all parts of the country, free food and refreshments, free nanny services. Who can forget little Ms. Piper, outfitted with a LV bag. I as a fairly intelligent person will not for one moment believe that Palin did not know that her clothes were from high end stores. The labels would have suggested that when she was trying them on. Nobody put a gun to her head take the clothes. She had to come up with some cockamania story now that she has been caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Nice try Sarah.

I don't know how many times I have to say it. The Republicans are running for 2012 in which they are going to try to blame the recession and the years of pain that are ahead on the Democratic policies. It was anything that Obama did that caused the recession. The Republicans are horrible people. They will sacrifice the country to gain power. This is about control. Nothing more, nothing less. They have no policy for America. There policy is to CONQUER all!!! The wing of the party that advocates this madness is demonic, period!

Obama - change you can believe in.

How any educated, thinking person who really cares about the future of this country vote can for this fanatic with the brains of a 13 year old is beyond me. What comes out of her mouth sounds more and more like the old Beavis and Butthead blather every day and I want that for a person a heartbeat away from the presidency - NOT!

Maybe you could fry Palin's neurons by asking her "what kind of socialist is Barack Obama?"

We know he's not....

...a national socialist (we've had far too many of those and they aren't lefties. One is too many.)

...a Christian Socialist (yep, there was/is such a thing (one wrote the pledge of allegiance)

...a Democratic Socialist

...a Socialist Democrat

...a Marxist (oh wait they aren't socialists they're communists)

...a member of the Labour Party (nope, they're in the UK)

So what is he? Sarah?

We know though... he is a democrat. Plain and simple. And not that far left of center. I'd say about 3 inches left of center.

Go Home Sarah, read some Hegel, watch some Monty Python and learn "The Philosopher's Song."
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/library/guide/hum/philosophy/philos_song.html

Then grow a mind, a heart and a real sense of humor. Lose the Pomo McCarthyist clap trap.

That is FAR too much critical reasoning and disguishing for Palin to ever attempt. She would self destruct if she even tried. What is so sad is that 70% of the people that post on HP know more about government than Palin does

I agree with you. These folks perhaps do not have the capacity to think. There are some of her supporters who say she is the governor of a large state and hence has experience(infact only 19 months). Alaska may be large only geographically, but it is not the same as being a governor of a state like California, where the some cities have higher population than the entire of Alaska. Well your comment demonstrates that 70% of the HP bloggers are educated enough to know more about the government and they cannot be easily fooled.

The Republicans continue to slam Obama for his contacts - Ayers, Wright, Rezko. Do a Google search on Tony Rezko sometime. George W. Bush apparently has a much stronger relationship with him than Obama ever did. Rezko hosted a mega-multi-million dollar fundraiser for "W's" re-election, plus he and his family/businesses donated nearly $50,000 to W's campaign. I guess it's okay when it's the Republicans.

I am a newly minted Obama supporter--ex-republican . In early voting in Nevada I voted for Obama Saturday. In my college years I was progressive leaning, and even worked for a Nader group called US PIRG, but then have spent the last 15 years in a stupor induced by brain-washing from a conservative religious community that I turned to out of an existential crisis my last year of college. I feel as though Obama can provide a center-left, but accomodating government that will hopefully transcend the narrow-minded and unthinking policies that have characterized our national discourse the last 8 years. As a Physician, I have long wished we had comprehensive national health coverage, but again let my fears of financial loss, and idealogical clinginess to cloud my thoughts. As a thinking person, I have long been concerned about the earth, and the environment, but let my fears of what the narrow-minded group of flat-earthers I associated with would think cloud my judgement. Asa person who has been helped by spirituality, I let dogmatism and not love lead the way. As the nephew of a gay man who died of AIDS in the nineties, I am ashamed to say that again, dogmatic bigotry compelled me to support homphobic candidates. NO MORE. It is time to turn away from militarism, bigotry, hubris, greed, and hypocrisy. Palin stands for that; if not supporting her means I am no longer welcome in the reupublican party... so be it.

You could not have said it any better. I deeply empathize your loss. Its NEVER TOO LATE to do some introspection and correct yourself. You are an example of a true human being. I wish we had more folks who think like you. The democratic party is a very large umbrella, under which you can find all sorts of individuals, irrespective of race, religion, color or status. Its an all inclusive party. I am glad you are voting for the Obama/Biden ticket. Thanks!!!

It appears that some folks have taken the lowest of low roads towards denying their own struggles to compete during their lost in our most crucial economical times facing America. JMcshame and Palin 2 appear to say words that bring to some a way of laughing with the crowd, but does nothing toward making the real pain go away. This is so sad. Way back in the 40's folks didn't scream and hollar re the troubled times, and reacting to this election in a negative manner won't make the troubled times nor the ones troubled go away either. Folks let's reach out to each other, the troubled Americans, and
vote against this side show which is demonstrating wasteful spending & poking fun at our discretion.
Come Nov 4, we can vote and move on from these games played by a careless few. We need to get our troops home, save our jobs, some need to get jobs, so we can save our homes and put food on our tables. ENOUGH of this JMcBush and Mcpalinsame team who are lying about & disguising their own tax sunamme that will make us homeless before they bury us. It's late Wake up & vote Obama 08

It is really a hoot reading the mindless rants about the Gov. of Alaska. Some real mental giants out there for sure.

For those of you that just don't get it stop and think about Obama:

He has associated with self proclaimed Marxist since his teenage years until he announced his run for President. He has claimed for years that he believes in redistribution of wealth from those that worked to earn it to those that do not. Look at each person he has been involved with and what his plans are for America. Our Constitution does not lend it's self to a Socilaist/Marxist form of government and that is why Obama wants to render the constitution meaningless.

We need the voters to look closely at just what Obama really means by Change. It is not change we need it is change he needs to bring this country down to a level of Third World countries. Why else do all of the Marxist leaders and the UN are praying for Obama to win. Think about that folks. That alone should scare the pants of of any thinking American.

Oh Billo-

What do you have to lose if the world is more fair? Are you frightened that the poor will have an adequate education? That loopholes for the wealthiest will be closed? That the right wing's relentless crusade to bastardize the constitution will be slowed? That our environment and economy might recover after the egregious abuses of the past eight years? This thinking American thinks it's about time.

I m glad I don't vote. Look, you might be right, but what is more socialist than state owning the banking system? The point is that the ruling party believed in capitalism as long as it filled their pockets.
now they want the state to fix big companies.

This country hasn't been in a pure capitalist state since 1800. Government has facilitated many many private capitalist efforts; pre-new deal, we saw what the philosophy of "I have got mine , now you get yours" "or mine mine mine it's all mine" did for society. We ARE a country of our " brother's keeper," we have have a collective interest in infrastructure, civil and criminal regulation and administration, collective and personal health. Pure capitalism is the stuff revolutions are made of; the top two percent having 95 % of the money they made of the backs of the of the disposable minimum wage earners, the deconstruction of a middle class into poverty or at least into insolvency and instabilty. You are very wrong about our Constitution. Our country was founded for the collective good, not to promote individual power and wealth.

When you enter a crowded darkened theater and yell "FIRE!" are you not then complicit in the damage and resulting havoc your actions created? By the same token, when you stand on a stage and call someone a person who "palls around with domestic terrorists," you speak of future DANGER and invoke the specter of communism and then invoke an ideal that there is a” REAL America and a non-America, pro Americans and NON Americans" are you not stoking the flames of xenophobia, hatred and bigotry. And when those planted ideals begin to smolder and people begin yelling "KILL HIM" and "TERRORIST" you say nothing but to offer more of the same, by way of encouraging their responses.. are we surprised when the smoldering embers of hatred begin to catch fire? When a mentally deranged supporter concocts a racially motivated crime about being attacked by a black man in an effort to "help" the campaign, and your campaign then jumps on this story with glee in hopes of it "catching afire", are you not complicit? And when this story is proven FALSE you say nothing, you do nothing to repudiate or quell the flames starting to burn higher and higher. And now we have two gunman set to follow thru with hundreds of deaths and an assassination attempt, and yet still you continue.
