I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sarah Palin had a few memorable moments during her campaign stop in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday. But the most eye-opening of them all came, it would appear, when the Alaska Governor somehow drew a connection between Barack Obama's tax policy and an encroaching, nightmarish, communist government. The Illinois Democrat, she hysterically suggested, would, through his proposals, create a country "where the people are not free."

"See, under a big government, more tax agenda, what you thought was yours would really start belonging to somebody else, to everybody else. If you thought your income, your property, your inventory, your investments were, were yours, they would really collectively belong to everybody. Obama, Barack Obama has an ideological commitment to higher taxes, and I say this based on his record... Higher taxes, more government, misusing the power to tax leads to government moving into the role of some believing that government then has to take care of us. And government kind of moving into the role as the other half of our family, making decisions for us. Now, they do this in other countries where the people are not free. Let us fight for what is right. John McCain and I, we will put our trust in you."

That yarn goes well beyond what Palin and McCain have, to this point, been comfortable asserting: mainly that Obama is proposing economic socialism. But there are a few things to keep in mind here: the McCain-Palin ticket does not oppose a progressive tax system. In fact, back in 2000, the Arizona Republican said rich people paid more in taxes because they could afford to do so.

"I think the first people who deserve a tax cut are working Americans with children that need to educate their children," he said, "and they're the ones that I would support tax cuts for first."

More importantly, Obama's tax plans are less progressive than those in place during the Clinton years. In fact, the rates that people making over $250,000 would have to pay would be the same as during the 1990s -- a time definitely not marked by the absence of freedoms.

Guess she doe'nt know that's what's happening now, GWBush already's doing that. She probably does'nt even know what the Patriot Act means or that our phones are being tapped. She actually reminds me of the average Republican voters I talk to.

Joe the Plumber wants to get a tax cut on his $250,000+ earnings from his plumbing business - isn't that a government handout, really? If more people have more money (the bottom 99% get the tax cut) then more people have money to hire a plumber and Joe makes millions from the MARKET. Who's the socialist here?

I think the question should be whether Joe the plumber can actually run a $250,000 business. He'd probably have to get a plumbing license first.

What infuriates me most about listening to Palin and McCain speak is the out and out LIES. That she could stand there and tell these people that under McCain they will get to keep more of what they earn is a lie and these people don't seem to grasp it.

You cannot convince me that every one of the people at these rallies are wealthy. I'll bet most of them are middle-class earners like the rest of us. Why do they not grasp that McCain is only helping the RICH keep more of what they earn by taxing the mess out of the middle class?

And these people, who will be handing over their money even faster than they do now are all cheering....I truly believe they don't WANT to know. McCain and Palin are going to go down in history as two of the sleaziest characters that ever ran for office.

It is a FACT that Obama's tax plan merely rolls back the tax code to Clinton era taxes. Examine your heart. What is the REALLY scary, slippery slope you are so afraid of?

No Sweetie, you've got it backwards. If you get conned by the Republicans again, you'll be cutting your own throat like all the past Bush voters did.

A slippery slope? Basically the same taxes, only now less from the poor people and more from the rich...what slope is this?
The teeter totter is going up and down, only this time 95% get the benefit and only 5% pay a very little more. How can anyone call this anything but good?
Why would the rich not feel perfectly willing to help support the country that made them rich? Why did they accept those tax cuts from Bush, didn't they have a conscience?
What kind of idiocy is mangling this simple fact into a conspiracy so deep and invasive that the country is doomed?
Good grief, grow up.
Well truthmeter, all the rest of us, and our families and our dogs and cats and birds and horses and cattle and sheep and spiders are voting against Palin McCain.

Early and as often as we are able. LOL. Just kidding... early and once, except for my cat. He is sneaky as hell.

The problem with taxing anyone at this time is that the market is so precarious that a tax increase may push entire businesses teetering on the edge out of business. Unemployment will be long suffering. It seems that Obama should get into office first, take a look at the situation and then make that determination. It is scary that he is talking about raising taxes before he is even in office. His answer is a tax increase where he should be asking for efficiencies in government.

what is scary about him? Honest question, I've just heard the same sentiment a few times in the last couple of days.

Bob the Boat Builder is a 67 million dollar boat builder business......According to McCain/Palin that is a small business owner....I guess compared to Cindi McCain's 100 million dollar business I guess things become relative as you move up the ladder.

I thought red-baiting in a campaign went out in the 50's. Palin is so reckless with the facts, the possiblity that she could ever be President sends shivers up my spine.

Her ties and Todd Palin's ties to the Alaska Independence Party (AiP) should have us all worried, especially since at their 2007 convention they adviced their members to join mainstream political groups, get elected so they could further their agenda....go to their 2007 convention on the internet and watch it for yourself...including Sarah Palin's address which including her wishing them well on their mission.

Poor Sarah doesn’t really know what a communist is, but she remembers from her sports journalism classes that it’s a scary, bad thing, so Obama must be one.

I can only caution those who are expecting magic from any of the candidates. It will take more than 4-8 years to unravel the crisis created by the current administration. I can only hope whomever gets into office will have a solid plan.

What we need is a solid majority of a filibuster proof 60 in the Senate. Then the American people can and should hold us accountable for what we do or do not accomplish.

What will be remembered most after this campaign? McSame's continual smear of his opponent. Every election runs smear adds but the McCain't campaign has done this nonstop since the beginning of the debates.

Only 8 more days until this is all over.

Let's see. Big Socialist plots. Medicare. Public schools. Social Security. The Police. The Fire Department. big socialists plots the lot of 'em, living on taxpayers' money. Take the Fire Department: my taxes have been paying towards that for decades, and I only needed it that one time my landlord set the house on fire for the insurance, back in the 1970s.

Seriously, all taxes share the wealth. McCain/Palin want to share it upwards, by continuing Bush's tax cuts for the rich. The idea is that this will trickle down on the rest of us. Not according to the Department of Labor... unemployment is at an all-time high.

I'm seeing things I never thought I'd see: my best friend, educated, experienced, out of work for a year now and between job interviews doing lots of little jobs and planting veg in the yard, to try to keep her house. My daughter and son-in-law lost the house that had been their pension. I don't see how tax breaks for the rich are going to encourage them to work harder than they already do. We. Need. Change!

I think we could USE a New Deal. All this name-calling just shows that the GOP is morally bankrupt.
