Financial Times:

US presidential elections involve a fabulous expense of time, effort and money. Doubtless it is all too much - but, by the end, nobody can complain that the candidates have been too little scrutinised. We have learnt a lot about Barack Obama and John McCain during this campaign. In our view, it is enough to be confident that Mr Obama is the right choice.

At the outset, we were not so confident. Mr Obama is inexperienced. His policies are a blend of good, not so good and downright bad. Since the election will strengthen Democratic control of Congress, a case can be made for returning a Republican to the White House: divided government has a better record in the United States than government united under either party.

I am not impressed with this endorsement!

With endorsements like this, who needs enemies?!

Ditto! In reading some of the other comments I was beginning to think we were all reading different editorials. That was the worst "endorsement" I have ever read. it sounded as thought they were reluctantly choosing the lesser of two evils. With an endorsement like that they may as well have remained neutral or thrown their support to McCain.

Keep in mind that this is from a very conservative, financial community paper. The fact that they would endorse Obama, even in spite of issues with his trade policies, is extraordinary.

I haven't felt so hopeful about this country in a long time. I tear up when I see endorsements from every segment of our nation. This time it is not about us vs them, it is about all of us coming together regardless of who you are, where you are, and what you are, and working together, doing our part and doing the damn thing. This is bigger than all of us, but it is about everyone of us. Let's not blow this. After November 4th, we have got to take this energy and keep moving forward. There is so much all of us can do as a group to benefit everyone. Let's keep this going past the 4th, in whatever way we can effect positive change.

The FT is from London, and is the first British newspaper to endorse Obama, as far as I know. The fact that it is the one of the most conservative papers here, makes it more surprising.

Actually, you are partially correct. FT is not that conservative. Like the Economist, it's pro-trade and pro-market but its social views are very liberal and its world views are very worldly. The truly conservative ones are The Sun, Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail. Those ones are the more on the right. But in the US, they will be called socialist propaganda, especially by the Palin lot.

McCain will call FT socialist later today in response.

I'm predicting an endorsement of Obama from the Economist too.
Without a doubt, if you understand global affairs, if you understand basic economics (meaning you don't think cutting $18 billion of earmarks will be enough to pay for $300 billion in tax cuts), if you understand the need to see shades of grey, if you understand the importance of unity and hope and that all we have to fear is fear itself, you have to vote for Barack Obama. He's not perfect, he's not a messiah, and he's not going to fix everything, but he'll do a lot of good things his first four years, and will hopefully finish reversing everything Bush did by the end of his second.

Can you say penny wise and dollar foolish. Not to mention occupying Iraq for 100 years. You notice McCain has not said anything about his plans for Iraq because he does not plan to get out at all.

And then Hillary can come and pick up where he leaves off. Sounds like a plan coming together.

A tepid endorsement but an endorsement nonetheless. I'm glad they laid out what the agree and disagree with in each candidate's platform and then explain why they're endorsing Obama.

tepid? the financial times endorsement? are you sure you're talking about the right one?

that was a ringing endorsement. well-written and decisive. gravitas to spare

I think tepid (maybe even apprehensive) is an appropriate adjective here. I'm not saying it isn't great that Obama has the endorsement of the FT. I think every right wing periodical or personality that gets behind Obama undercuts the Republican message that he is some sort of radical left wing Marxist moonbat who shouldn't be trusted. I'm just saying that although the FT thinks he's better than McCain they still aren't entirely happy with some of his positions and they don't expect him to be able to do nearly all that he intends to. It's a lukewarm (syn. tepid) endorsement. In some ways I think that's even better. It tells economic conservatives that although they may disagree with Obama on some key issues it's okay to vote for him because he is still the best man for the job.
