Anchorage Daily News:

Alaska enters its 50th-anniversary year in the glow of an improbable and highly memorable event: the nomination of Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential candidate. For the first time ever, an Alaskan is making a serious bid for national office, and in doing so she brings broad attention and recognition not only to herself, but also to the state she leads.

Alaska's founders were optimistic people, but even the most farsighted might have been stretched to imagine this scenario. No matter the outcome in November, this election will mark a signal moment in the history of the 49th state. Many Alaskans are proud to see their governor, and their state, so prominent on the national stage.

Many of her own constituents are facing a long and deadly winter with the inability to pay for fuel,many small towns are facing a crisis because winter came quickly and fuel was not delivered early enough to beat the devastting weather that make winter deliveries treacherous or impossible­.Some small towns have completely run out of money,having turn out the lights and and they are unable to provide basic services that we take for granted.Th­at plane that Palin sold not on Ebay,that was what the state used to transport prisoners to facilities here in the lower 48,because they do not have the facilities in Alaska.Gov Palin and her husband have complained that the one plane left was not available when she needed it,but that is the one plane now available to transport prisoners,carry law enforcement into the "bush",transport people in an emergency,any need that might arise.Mayb­e selling the plane was just political tender,intended to impress the electorate with a not well thought out plan.
Ok,I will be quiet now,I seem to be rambling way too much.But maybe you can get the idea of what I see when I research the judgement and ability of McCains running mate.

I was wondering when people would pick up on the fact that Alaskans are no longer pleased with their Governor.A­laskans may not have the time or inclination to seek out and study information on a daily basis about the people running the state,they seem to be independent and proud.Life in Alaska includes time and effort spent on things that we in the lower 48 take for granted,most people seem to shoot their own meat,deal with the realities of home heating sources that cost double what they do down here,$10 a gallon milk ,gas that is considerably more expensive,a long list of things that take up time leave someone a bit tired for the late night web surfing we seem to engage in.So this campaign has put their leader under a spotlight,shining on the missteps and lack of integrity,­intelligen­ce ,and honesty that they would have been much less likely to notice.It is easy to hide a lack of experience when you are running a state with huge surpluses that is able to pay its own people to live there,due to the fact that the Federal Government,through our tax dollars ,pays for most of the infrastructure in the state.In fact,the extra money that Palin added to the PDF funds in the form of a separate check,could have been better used if she had more forsight and intelligence.

The check given to every Alaskan, I believe is called a Permanent Fund Check from the interest on oil money.... depending on what is in the fund it is a percentage of the fund. If you have a family of 6, each person receives X amount of $. I left Alaska in 1989 and my family of 3 each received, if memory serves me correctly a little under $2K. Sarah doesn't give anybody anything..­. That fund has been in place for a while. There is no state tax. There is sales tax and each borough/city determines what that tax is.

Alaskan's as a whole are smart people... honest, hardworking and independent. They are seeing their Governor for the first time... Really seeing her and I would not want to be her come November 5th... She's not going to be well received! This may be the end of her... Too much embarrassment what with Ted Stevens, Don Young and now Ms. Palin.

The Dallas Morning News recently endorsed John McCain in the most mealy-mouthed, lackluster endorsement you can imagine. Sarah Palin's name was not mentioned. They said he would change the way things work in Washington, then in the very same paragraph said his election would promise "continuity"! They were bombarded with furious letters to the editor, and threats of cancelled subscriptions.

I wonder if I could get the Anchorage Daily News delivered to my home daily - do they have the New York Times crossword puzzle? That's about the only thing worth buying the Dallas Morning News for.

Obama only ever gave lip service to the drilling garbage, and only to head off the electorate at large being confused by the 'drill' chants.

Gas is no longer everyone's #1 economic issue, because the fuel speculation market collapsed, because all speculation collapsed.

Rebuilding the economy without the vast speculation markets will provide the opportunity to invest in actual businesses and infrastructure, and people are finally ready to accept the need for renewable energy.

I don't enjoy hearing Obama create centrist talking points, but I'm more than confident about his actual, on-the-job judgment.
