I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Republican John McCain on Sunday dismissed the sour poll numbers that show him trailing in his White House race against Democrat Barack Obama and said his campaign is "doing fine."

Interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press," the Arizona senator said he has pulled closer to Obama.

Watch:

"We've closed in the last week," McCain said. "We'll continue to be very competitive in many of the battleground states."

Recent public polls have shown McCain trailing Obama both nationally and in some of the battleground states, including Iowa, where McCain was campaigning Sunday. A Newsweek poll released Saturday showed Obama with a 13-point lead nationally.

Iowa offers seven electoral votes. A total of 270 Electoral College votes are needed to win the presidency.

Questioned about his standing, McCain said the race is close and insisted he will emerge victorious on Nov. 4, Election Day.

"This is going to be a very close race, and I believe I'm going to win it," he said. McCain said he's been heartened by the size of the crowds and the level of enthusiasm at his events.

On the subject of his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain rejected the notion that she unqualified to be president and is hurting the campaign.

"I don't defend her. I praise her. She is exactly what Washington needs," he said.

He also dismissed criticism about the Republican Party spending $150,000 on her wardrobe at high-end retailers.

"She lives a frugal life, she and her family are not wealthy, she and her family were thrust into this," McCain said. "She is a role model to millions and millions of Americans."

He continued to paint Obama as a big-spending liberal.

"We have stark differences," said McCain, a conservative, characterizing Obama's economic positions as the most liberal he has seen. "His political philosophy is very different."

McCain argued that he's comfortable with the state of the race with nine days before the election.

"Obviously, I choose to trust my senses as well as the polls," he said. "I've been in a lot of presidential campaigns. I see the intensity out there, I see the passion. We're very competitive out there."

"We're going to do well in this campaign," he said.

At another point, McCain predicted: "We're going to be up very, very late on election night."

McCain was headed to the University of Northern Iowa for a rally and then to the battleground of Ohio, where polls show McCain faltering in the race for that state's 20 electoral votes. Ohio gave President Bush a second term in the 2004.

McCain is in a lose-lose situation here.

First, it is no secret that any Republican they put out in this election had a very steep hill to climb. McCain was chosen because he had the best shot and basically became the GOP's sacrificial lamb. McCain made his situation worse on his own though. He did a complete 180 of his personality (or finally allowed the public to see his real personality) and has become blinded by his last shot at victory ambition.

Second, although McCain himself may not believe these polls the rest of this country does. If he pulls the ultimate Hail Mary and actually wins this thing, most Americans will think he stole it regardless of any evidence otherwise. His ability to lead will be so tainted by mistrust and anger that no matter what he does for the next four years people will still dislike him for 'stealing the White House.' He will not be able to do a thing to move this country forward in a better direction. That, coupled with such a strong majority of Dems in Congress, will basically make him a lame duck the day he takes the oath.

Sad.

This once-noble jungle cat being trained to do tricks for his master.

"Fellow prisoners" indeed.

What monsterous force could make a hero into a pet?

"I believe we are going to win. I also believe that if I remove my tin-foil hat, Iranians will steal my pin number. Now if you'll excuse me, the voices in my head are starting to sing "Bohemian Rhapsody" and I have to do the "Got a mousch Got a mousch Will you do the Fandango?" part."

McCain will lose. Further, he will lose badly enough to take the entire republican party down with him. In his defense, however, he is simply delusional and reponsibility for the republican losses should be put on the desk of George Bush and his acoloytes who led the country into the current fiscal and foreign policy disasters.

"We've closed in the last week,"

Really? That doesn't to be on the MSM's headlines.

Maybe his was talking about his campaign offices in Minn. and Mich.

Every time I hear McCain do his "We've got him right where we want him" thing I expect Obama to come back with "What're you going to do? BLEED on me?"

In light of these most recent comments by McCain, it might be best if we all re-educated ourselves about the many ways that US elections can be s.t.o.l.e.n.

Comcast on-demand has the documentary "Uncounted" in its free movies this month. Well worth a watch if you have the 80 minutes.

It's cringeworthy when he says he is proud of his campaign.

What campaign?! His entire campaign has been about him being a POW, maverick, and Obama being a bad guy.

Maybe he does still have some maverick in him: He's such a maverick that he refuses to run an actual Presidential campaign. But that's hardly anything to be proud of.

In Quantum Physics, there is the theory of the Multiverse... that is, there are an infinite number of alternate universes where each possible outcome to anything actually happens. McCain is, obviously, talking about one of those alternate realities, but not ours.

I feel bad for that alternate reality where he DOES win!

P.S. And actually, McCain did not say he 'guarantees' a win - that was media hype. McCain said 'he believes he's going to win'. Remember when he said about the third debate that he was 'going to kick Obama's a--'? Really - the man is caught between a rock and a hard place and has to put forth the Republican hype for his party. That is also why Palin is starting to drift away and start her own Hate Talk Express. She sees the writing on the wall.
