McCain On Obama, Nuclear Power Safeguards: "Blah, Blah, Blah"

During a rally in Northern Iowa University this morning, John McCain made a strange remark that only serves to cement the notion that he does not respect Barack Obama:

When I'm elected president We're going to stop spending $700 billion to buy oil from countries that don't like us very much," John McCain said at Northern Iowa University this morning.

"You know, the other night in the debate with Senator Obama, I said his eloquence is admirable, but pay attention to his words. We talk about offshore drilling and he said he would quote, consider, offshore drilling. We talked about nuclear power, well it has to be safe, environment, blah, blah, blah."

While McCain is targeting Obama's eloquence as empty words with his "blah, blah, blah" comment, it's curious why he would use safeguards for nuclear power as the vehicle for this attack. The line makes McCain seem not only callous but also dismissive of a very real concern regarding nuclear power. It recalls the moment during the third presidential debate when McCain used air quotes while discussing a woman's health as a factor in her having an abortion.

I was a visitor to a nuclear plant on Friday - and our meeting started with a 'safety message' -- Anyone who thinks they are winning over the nuclear industry by downplaying safety is an idiot!

I don't know anyone (with any experience) in that industry who could reasonably be considered 'intemperate' never mind hot headed or volatile. To the McCain's of the world -- safety requires careful rational planning for contingencies - especially the ones you think won't happen. Our Nuclear industry is enviably safe - but only because the 'caretakers' of that industry take safety extremely seriously.

I know many republicans in that industry -- I only know a few who will be voting for McCain. I'm also pretty sure that many of that small number would vote Obama if McCain's 'position' were more publicized.

These are people who make chess grand masters look impulsive. They don't like people who 'shoot first, think later', regardless of their other positions.

OMG, that video is amazing. Who are these people screaming in ecstasy when McCain says "nuclear energy has to be safe, environment, blah, blah, blah" Really, I wonder if any of those people would be that excited to find out that a nuclear power plant was being built across the street from their house and when they asked if it was safe, McCain just told them "blah, blah, blah" -- Incredible!!
