CHICAGO — Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson's 7-year-old nephew was found dead in the back of an SUV on Monday, ending a frantic search that began after the shooting deaths of her mother and brother three days earlier.

The singer and actress was among seven family members and close friends who cried and held hands as they identified Julian King's body from a live image on a television screen at the Cook County Medical Examiner's office Monday afternoon.

Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the boy, like his grandmother and uncle, had been shot. The medical examiner's office planned a Tuesday autopsy.

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said a motive remained unclear Monday but added, "It wasn't a case of a stranger-type homicide."

Police have characterized the slayings as "domestic related" and authorities have been questioning Julian's stepfather, who has been estranged from the boy's mother and is being held on a parole violation. No one has been charged in the slayings.

Julian's body was found shortly after 7 a.m. in the rear seat of the SUV, which matched the one mentioned in an Amber Alert for the boy and was parked on the street in a neighborhood of brownstone homes and apartment buildings.

The vehicle was about 10 miles from the house where the other victims were found, which was where Julian lived and where Hudson grew up.

Hudson had offered $100,000 Sunday for information leading to the safe return of her nephew, the son of her sister, Julia Hudson. Hudson's publicist did not immediately return calls and e-mail messages Monday.

Story continues below

"Miss Hudson wanted to request privacy," Cook County spokesman Sean Howard said after the family left the medical examiner's office. "This is a very trying time for her and her family."

Hudson's aunt, Dorothy Hudson, said the Chicago funeral home she owns with her husband will handle arrangements for the family, but details were pending.

"We're just sad. We're going through this stage where we're just sad and in shock," Dorothy Hudson said.

The Amber Alert had listed William Balfour, the estranged husband of Julia Hudson, as a suspect in a "double homicide investigation." He is not the boy's father and has not been charged in the slayings.

Weis said Monday that Balfour "remains a person of interest."

The chief said he was confident that with two crime scenes, investigators would find important clues.

Balfour, 27, was taken into custody for questioning Friday after the bodies of Hudson's 57-year-old mother, Darnell Donerson, and 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson, were found.

On Sunday, Balfour was transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections, where a spokeswoman declined Monday to discuss his parole violation.

Corrections records show Balfour spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle. He was expected to remain in state custody until the Illinois Prisoner Review Board looked at his case.

Balfour's mother, Michele Balfour, has said Hudson's mother kicked Balfour out of the family home last winter. She denied her son had anything to do with the killings.

It was unclear whether Balfour had an attorney.

Lynette Louden, 47, said she called police about the SUV across the street from her home on Chicago's West Side after her family's Chihuahua started barking at it early Monday. Some neighbors said they hadn't seen the vehicle before Monday, but Louden said it had been there since at least Saturday.

"I only hoped the body wasn't in there," she said. "When they said that it was, I cried."

Weis said police were waiting for the autopsy to determine how long the boy had been dead, but estimated the vehicle was parked on the street "a couple of days."

When asked how officers could have missed the SUV during their massive search, Weis noted that Chicago is a big city and that the vehicle was "several miles away from the first crime scene."

Steve Peterson, head of the department's Bureau of Investigative Services, said the search for the boy had been centered farther east based on information they had about where Balfour's current girlfriend lives.

Hudson, 27, who won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2007 for her role in "Dreamgirls," returned to Chicago to be with her family during the weekend. She also had identified the bodies of her mother and brother.

Neighbors and well-wishers brought stuffed animals and other items to a makeshift memorial outside Donerson's two-story white clapboard home as news of Monday's discovery spread.

At a candlelight vigil on Monday night, hundreds of people gathered outside the Englewood home. They sang, held hands and cried in the cold as they contributed to an expanding memorial of stuffed animals, balloons and flowers.

"I wanted to come out and support the community in their endeavor and to let Jennifer Hudson know how much we care and we're praying for her," said Doris Jones, who lives in the neighborhood. "It pains all of us to know three lives are gone and we don't know why."

This is the reason why we need serial codes on all guns and bullets to track them. If we have to hold up the 2nd amendment, so the NRA don't start crying, we as the people who are against gun violence, NRA, we need to join together and demand stricter laws. Majority of citizens are civilize people and are not members of the NRA.

You actually believe this thug took the time to register his gun? You actually believe he even qualified to purchase a gun, or had money for a legit gun? You actually believe he dotted i's and crossed t's?

Must be very different in your world.

The question becomes - who DID purchase the gun?

Someone had to, before this guy got a hold of it.

Should the gun be found, it should be tracked down to the purchases. Fact of the matter is, it should be illegal (if it isn't already) to legally purchase a handgun, and then to sell/give it to someone who doesn't have a license.

I like the idea of serial codes on guns/bullets. We track these illegal guns down to the persons who legally bought them, and we take care of the problem.

Everyone laughed at Chris Rock when he suggested raising the price on bullets to $500 each. Actually, it's the perfect solution. People could keep their guns but if you want to use it, it would cost you. This triple murder would have cost the killer $1500, an amount I seriously doubt that the suspect who could not even afford his own place, could pay. Sometimes the best solution is the most simple.

This is so very sad about Jennifer Hudson family. Illinois does have the death penalty.

I'm usually one to complain about how celebrity tragedies are made to seem more important than those of everyday people...

but man this is pretty sad...it appears that the three most beloved people in her life were brutally murdered...that's devastating

No, my heart is with every family that experiences it. Celebrity just gives it a name and a face.

It's important to remember that celebrities were ordinary people before they became famous, especially this gal just recently. And the murdered are not celebrities, just victims of horrible crime.

Just family. Grief doesn't know celebrityhood, it's just unimaginable grief.

I think many every day people identify with this. And for the Jennifer and the Hudson family, this horror gets played out under the eyes and ears of national and international press. No, no more important, just more visible.

So much senseless violence. We need to stop this! Gun violence must stop! We must get these illegal guns off the streets. I hope they solve this case immediately!

Steamboat, I was just about to write the same exact thing about Julia Hudson bringing that criminal into her family's life, when I saw that you beat me to it. But reports are that Jennifer did try to move her mother out of South Side Chicago, but her mother would never leave. My grandmother was the same way - stubborn Italian, and would never ever leave South Philly no matter how bad things got. Older generations are like that, they don't want to leave their roots.

I can't imagine what the Hudsons are going through today.I wish them all the best.

In all fairness, Jennifer DID want to move her mother out of that horrible area but her mother wouldn't allow it. She preferred to stay right where she had always been and not change because Jennifer now had money.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Hudson family.

Had they been murdered by some random passerby, the neighbourhood would have been significant. But that doesn't seem to be what happened... If the police has the right man, the motive for this was personal. Revenge, anger, domestic violence. Punishing the mother of the child by taking away three of her dear ones - the very dearest hidden in such a way that she would spend days praying and hoping and despairing, increasing her pain. Does anyone think that sort of anger and revengefulness would have magically disappeared had the family moved to a better house in a better neighbourhood? I don't believe that for a second.

Thanks for the info. Understandable. My grandfolks, also..............However, nobody wants to answer me about the sister taking up with this thug (Balfour) with such a violent and shady past. The PC-police here may not like it, but I'm 100% right to ask this.

While it does seem inexplicable that Jennifer Hudson's sister would take up with an ex-con, many criminals are indeed cons, as in confidence men.

One of the many areas of expertise that cons often pick up in prison, is how to BS a gal. Hudson's boyfriend probably knew all of the right things to say; the bum rap, terrible childhood, bad luck, plus lots of endearing love talk.

She may have believed that with her love, he would become a better person. Sadly, that rarely happens with cons.

I agree that her choice of companion is questionable and you have every right to question her judgement, but the bottom line is Balfour is the one responsible. It is always easy to blame every body but the actual perpetrator. Many people are killed by "thugs" they don't even know. Recall the Jon Benet Ramsey case, everyone wanted to blame the parents right away because they allowed her to enter beauty pagents. A pedophile killed Jon Benet (period)

Like everybody else, my condolences to the family........But I'm sorry but why was the sister taking up with a guy who spent 7 years in prison for attempted murder and had a history of violence? Just for the sake of the child and mother, if nothing else, why would you do that? And why does a successful entertainer/actress, who whipped out $100,000 reward money as easily as we would $10 keep her mom and brother/sister in the worst neighborhood in Chicago (Englewood). Sorry if I'm not PC, but these are the facts.

Because some people try to stay and bring some light to the communities that raised them. But people like you who lack depth wouldn't understand. Not everyone bails and moves to the wonderbread world. You should see how the community the Obamas live has come up. It's amazing what black communities can accomplish when the haters get out of the way!!!

So explain why the sister took up with a THUG with a history of violence who spent 7 years for attempted murder?.....As for Obama, the senator lives in the exclusive Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. And it was very exclusive, as you very well know, before the Obama's moved there. So don't say it just has come up. Do you even live in Chicago? Like I do.

No I'm sorry but that argument does not hold water. If you have the means to get your family out of a bad neighborhood, you should do it, no exceptions. Ok maybe someday, after an influx of millions of dollars, Englewood might be able to pull itself out of being a ghetto, but obviously that is not the case now, and we live in the now.

So you're saying that even if you have the means, you should leave your family in a bad neighborhood for the sake of "keeping it real" or something? That's pretty thin, man.

Her family didn't want to leave that area. Her mom specifically didn't want to leave, because it was home, and she knew everyone there. She didn't "keep" her family there, they chose to stay there.

By the way, when you use the word 'facts', you suggest that what you're saying is truth. But really, all you have is your opinion, and in this case, your opinion sucks.

So does that mean if your sister takes up with a thug with a violent history and who did 7 years in prison for attempted murder, it wouldn't bother you? Especially if a child is in the situation, also.....ANSWER, PLEASE ! because if you say its ok, then your opinion sucks.

FIRST of all, her family DOES NOT live in Englewood, the live on the far east side of chicago by South Shore. And we don't know why Jen's sister was with this guy. And right now its not imporant.

Learn to spell....Also, everybody besides you says ENGLEWOOD (installing meters). I worked there, its bad news. Sorry if I'm not PC. South Shore (depending on what part) is nothing to write home about, either. BTW, I LIVE on the far southside (where South Deering, ESide, and Hegewisch all meet) And I'll admit, nothing I suppose to write home about, either.

Why are you reading so much into this. How can you possibly know the reasons for anything going on in that family or if indeed they were going on. You pettiness in this time of tragedy is evidence that you are jealous of Jennifer's success and are not the least bit saddened by these senseless murders.

I have to agree with you - regardless of those who think that this is being judgmental. There is a difference between being judgmental and speaking the truth. The TRUTH is Julia married this guy in 2006 after he had spent 7 years in jail for attempted murder, carjacking and being in a stolen car (TRUTH). Women with children should be held accountable for these type of decisions that place innocent children in harms way. Julia had a right to date, marry, or co-habitate with any one she so choose but to put a thug like this fool over her child is akin to child abuse (in my humble opinion). Until children are able to make decisions for themselves PARENTS owe them their protection, guidance and love. I also fault this child's biological father who should have been in court fighting for custody to remove his child from that environment.

This is beyond a tragedy and could have very well been prevented had his mother made a better decision. Hosea 4:6 states that 'my people die from a lack of knowledge because they reject knowledge.' I am so tired of people making excuses for the carelessness of parents who put their innocent children in harm's way. FYI: Not a judgment - just TRUTHS! We owe our children better!
