I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The National Republican Senatorial Committee put out a kitchen-sink type ad Monday, accusing Al Franken of writing pornography, laughing at the disabled, humiliating minorities and demeaning women.

The meat of the ad is lifted, primarily, from Franken's time as a humorist. And it comes at a time when the Democratic challenger appears close to pulling of an electoral upset.

But the real back-story here is as much about Franken's opponent, Norm Coleman, as it is about the NRSC.

Several weeks ago, the Minnesota Republican pledged to launch a positive campaign. And, subsequently, he took down all negative advertisements. But he has done very little to demonstrate his disapproval of independent groups who are whacking Franken on his behalf.

The Coleman campaign insists that he is prohibited from interceding when it comes to the ads put out by the NRSC. The Senator himself has said that it would be illegal to personally contact outside organizations to "ask them to stop their negative ads."

But other candidates for office have done just that, including Rep. Chris Shays, a Republican from Connecticut and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat from Arizona. And just this Sunday, Coleman emailed NRSC chair Sen. Jon Ensign about a direct mail piece sent out by the group's independent expenditure arm -- a pamphlet that looks like a children's book and accuses Franken of writing a pornography column in Playboy Magazine and "comedy routines about raping women."

In short, the Minnesota Senate race is witnessing mudslinging at least as dirty as that seen on the presidential level. And Coleman seems to be trying to appear above the fray while reaping the benefits of outside group attacks.

Always beware the use of "..." in a quotation, for you have no idea what came before or after it.

Why doesn't the Republican party save money and just put out one ad that says, "Democrats = Satan"?

Their strategy is so idiotic at this point. What are they for? They only talk about what they are against.

SARAH PALIN DEMEANS WOMEN. HER EXHIBITION OF PREGNANT CHILD AND 5 YR OLD TO CANVASS FOR HER DOES NOT PLAY WITH ME WELL. I REMEMBER WHEN MY KIDS WERE NOT IN SCHOOL, I HAD CALLS FROM THE SCHOOL. ARE HER CHILDREN EXCEMPT FROM ANY SUCH RULE? COMEDIAN WOULD SAY LOTS OF THINGS ON STAGE, WHEN ANALYZED ARE NOT VERY TASTEFUL. BUT THE INTENTION OF THEM IS TO EVINCE LAUGHTER. BUT DRAGGING DOWN-SYNDROM CHILD AND PREGNANT CHILD TO THE RALLEYS LOOKS LIKE DEMEANING TO HANDICAPPED AND MOTHERHOOD.

Just heard an ad on the radio; how Al would have stopped medicare if he had his way. I thought all the anti-medicare politicians were republican? Or at least bought and paid for.

What if they're all the same?

I am a resident of Minnesota and have heard Al speak and have read his positions on Medicare and he would definitely NOT stop Medicare. In fact, his position is just the opposite. Please take the time to visit his campaign's web page to find out more. Let's educate ourselves and not let the ads be our only source of education on the candidates. We must take responsibility for our own education on the candidates and the issues.

I think he has suggested expanding medicare to essentially cover everyone, or at least have it cover all children and some adults younger than currently allowed. I mean, in between his insults to the handicapped, etc.

There's yet another new low in political advertising. Who let the dogs out?

Go Al Franken!

These fear and smear tactics by the NRSC and, tacitly, by Norm and his campaign have had the opposite effect than what was intended. As a Minnesotan, Norm has lost my respect. Time and funds have been wasted on these horrible ads, instead of educating the electorate on Norm's positions on the issues and his solutions to our many problems. Al Franken has taken the higher road and in his tireless campaigning around the State, has touched the hearts of many average folks. He is extremely smart and hard working and studied on the issues. If you had the chance to see him with a crowd or in a small time diner, you will quickly realize how seriously he is taking his campaign and his desire to be of service to this great State. I will be sending him a donation again today.

I assume you're talking about Coleman. Because if you mean Franken, that doesn't make any sense.

I like (NOT) how they make all these claims, then offer no shred of proof--even half-baked right-wing nut-job style proof.

Another Coleman distraction to take attention away from his neglect in role as Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Permanent Investigations. He did nothing about contractor abuses and no-bid contracts to KBR and the like.

Who's worse for the Republicans in MN, my mothers home state.
I say Bachmann (rhymes with Eichmann) has a a bigger problem.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 AM on 10/28/2008

Its not a matter of who's worse.... Franken is running for Senate vs Norm Colemen; Bachmann is running for her Congeressional seat of the 6th district vs El Tinklenburg.

I will be giving $100 to the Al Franken campaign.
America is in a big hole. Their is hard work to do after the disaster
Bush years. The Senate could use his humor, perfectly suited for all Americans
but especially those with some education.
