BURBANK, Calif. — No $150,000 wardrobe malfunctions for Michelle Obama.

"Actually, this is a J. Crew ensemble," the wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama told comedian Jay Leno on Monday on his talk show. She wore a yellow sweater, skirt and blouse ensemble.

"You can get some good stuff online," she added.

WATCH WHOLE APPEARANCE (CLOTHES COMMENT W/4:15 LEFT):

Questioned by Leno, the potential first lady declined to criticize GOP vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin about revelations that the Republican National Committee spent $150,000 at Neiman Marcus and other high-end retailers on clothes and accessories for Palin and her family.

Obama said she and her husband have a policy of spending their own money on their clothes. But she said she wanted to be "empathetic."

"A V.P. pick, it's like being shot out of a cannon. All of a sudden you're at the center of attention, and you want to look good," said Michelle Obama, adding she has never met Palin. "You're living in your home, minding your business, and all of a sudden you're on the national stage and everyone's watching."

Leno asked about Barack Obama's ailing grandmother. Obama recently left the campaign trail to spend time in Hawaii with his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who virtually raised him and is his main remaining family.

"She's doing OK, up and down. But we are just grateful that he took time off and went to see her," Michelle Obama said. She said her husband credited his grandmother, whom he calls "Toot," with teaching him strength.

She quoted him as saying: "'She's tough, she's been through a lot. She's still hanging on. If you wonder where I got my toughness, it's from Toot.'"

She said neither of Obama's two young daughters is overly excited by the campaign.

Ten-year-old Malia's reaction to her father's plans to air a 30-minute paid advertisement on national TV Wednesday night?

"'You're going to be on all the TV? Are you going to interrupt my TV?'" her mother said Malia asked.

She said Barack Obama reassured his daughter that he hadn't bought time on the Disney Channel.

What is not to love? She is warm, intelligent, articulate, humble. Of course noone is perfect. But IMHO having the Obama's in the White House would be a much needed breath of fresh air and inspiration. My fingers and toes are crossed for a landslide Obama/Biden victory. My prayers are with the Obama's, the rest of their family and their campaign as they move through these last days before the election. I'm going to fill out my mail in ballot, mail it in, and see if I can get off of work next Tuesday to help get folks to the polls.

Really, Michelle Obama is a lovely lady. Unaffected, unassuming, clear, direct, and with a keen intelligence and sense of style. Class shows. Pity Palin couldn't buy it, even with $150K.

She's a class act. Loved the outfit and found the bit about the daughter getting upset about the TV ad funny.

Classy and down to Earth... no other words can describe it. I can't wait until she is first lady and can help restore some dignity to our country.

I know this woman. She would be a friend of mine if we travelled in the same circles. What a relief it will be to finally have sympathetic people in the White House. I'm tired of feeling like an alien in my own country simply for believing in justice, fair play, community service, helping your neighbors who are suffering, paying your bills, doing your job, tolerance, kindness, etc.

124 is a really respectable IQ. 100 is average and anything over 140 is considered near-genius. Anyway you don't need a high IQ to be a great President. Whatever you do need, Mac ain't got it.

John McCain IQ is 124 so low,now i do understand his pick for Palin?
Biden IQ 146 wow that is nice.

I just love the obama family!!!!

Michelle did a fabulous job on Leno. She came off really kind, sophisticated, classy, understanding, empathetic, and just carried herself with an easy about that you just don't see any many wives of political people. Other wives always come off very well rehearsed and just 'in the zone' to do a good interview, but you can truly tell she was enjoying her time and very at ease with herself and just in the moment.

& I LOVE HER OUTFIT! Sure, looks a whole lot better than what Sarah Palin wasted $150,000 on. In Sarah Palin's case; money can't buy you class.

Is J. Crew listed in the stock market? If so, it's probably the only sure thing out there, Is Buffet buying?

She's as likeable and charming a first lady candidate as I've known in my lifetime. If her husband is elected, I hope she'll use her new found platform to make real change.

She looked great last night, and carried herself, as usual, as a class act.
