This undated photo obtained from a MySpace webpage shows Daniel Cowart, 20 of Bells, Tenn. holding a weapon. Federal agents have broken up a plot to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. and shoot or decapitate 102 black people in a Tennessee murder spree, the ATF said Monday Oct. 27, 2008. In court records unsealed Monday, federal agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school by two neo-Nazi skinheads. WASHINGTON — Two white supremacists allegedly plotted to go on a national killing spree, shooting and decapitating black people and ultimately targeting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal authorities said Monday.

In all, the two men whom officials described as neo-Nazi skinheads planned to kill 88 people _ 14 by beheading, according to documents unsealed in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

The spree, which initially targeted an unidentified predominantly African-American school, was to end with the two men driving toward Obama, "shooting at him from the windows," the documents show.

"Both individuals stated they would dress in all-white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt," the court complaint states. "Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt."

An Obama spokeswoman traveling with the senator in Pennsylvania had no immediate comment.

Sheriffs' deputies in Crockett County, Tenn., arrested the two suspects _ Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of Helena-West Helena, Ark. _ Oct. 22 on unspecified charges. "Once we arrested the defendants and suspected they had violated federal law, we immediately contacted federal authorities," said Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce.

The two were charged by federal authorities Monday with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.

Cowart and Schlesselman were being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.

Jasper Taylor, city attorney in Bells, said Cowart was arrested Wednesday. He was held for a few days in Bells, then moved over the weekend to another facility.

Until his arrest, Cowart lived with his grandparents in a southern, rural part of the county, Taylor said, adding that Cowart apparently never graduated from high school. He moved away, possibly to Arkansas or Texas, then returned over the summer, Taylor said.

Attorney Joe Byrd, who has been hired to represent Cowart, said in a written statement that he was was investigating the charges against his client and would have no further comment. Messages left on two telephone numbers listed under Cowart's name were not immediately returned.

No telephone number for Schlesselman in Helena-West Helena could be found immediately.

The court documents say the two men met about a month ago on the Internet and found common ground in their shared "white power" and "skinhead" philosophy.

The numbers 14 and 88 are symbols in skinhead culture, referring to a 14-word phrase attributed to an imprisoned white supremacist: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children" and to the eighth letter of the alphabet, H. Two "8"s or "H"s stand for "Heil Hitler."

Court records say Cowart and Schlesselman also bought nylon rope and ski masks to use in a robbery or home invasion to fund their spree, during which they allegedly planned to go from state to state and kill people. Agents said the skinheads did not name the African-American school they were targeting.

Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville, Tenn., field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, said authorities took the threats very seriously.

"They said that would be their last, final act _ that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama," Cavanaugh said. "They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying."

He added: "They seemed determined to do it. Even if they were just to try it, it would be a trail of tears around the South."

An ATF affidavit filed in the case says Cowart and Schlesselman told investigators the day they were arrested they had shot at a glass window at Beech Grove Church of Christ, a congregation of about 60 black members in Brownsville, Tenn.

Nelson Bond, the church secretary and treasurer, said no one was at the church when the shot was fired. Members found the bullet had shattered the glass in the church's front door when they arrived for evening Bible study.

"We have been on this site for about 120 years, and we have never had a problem like this before," said Bond, 53 and a church member for 45 years.

The investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible, Cavanaugh said. He said there's no evidence _ so far _ that others were willing to assist Cowart and Schlesselman with the plot.

At this point, there does not appear to be any formal assassination plan, Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said.

"Whether or not they had the capability or the wherewithal to carry out an attack remains to be seen," he said.

Zahren said the statements about the assassination came out in interviews after the men were arrested last week.

The Secret Service became involved in the investigation once it was clear that an Obama assassination attempt was part of the plot. Obama received a Secret Service detail in May 2007, the earliest a candidate has ever been assigned protection, in part because of his status as a prominent black candidate.

"We don't discount anything," Zahren said, adding that it's one thing for the defendants to make statements, but it's not the same as having an organized assassination plan.

Helena-West Helena, on the Mississippi River in east Arkansas' Delta, is in one of the nation's poorest regions, trailing even parts of Appalachia in its standard of living. Police Chief Fred Fielder said he had never heard of Schlesselman.

However, the reported threat of attacking a school filled with black students worried Fielder. Helena-West Helena, with a population of 12,200, is 66 percent black. "Predominantly black school, take your pick," he said.

As an African-American, I've had troubling thoughts of someone retaliating against people of color, randomly, in the event that Obama/Biden wins.

But, I'm reminded of what my family members generations ago must have endured, and keep working my *ss off to help get Barack Obama elected.

It frightens me to think that these kids were 20 and 18! They are far to young to hold on to such old hatred in their hearts. The world is changing... when is everyone going to get on board?

Well, then, you've got to blame their parents and grandparents and so forth all the way back... Maybe blame isn't the solution so much as trying to find ways of breaking through all the misinformation and craziness, poverty and frustration, that have been threaded through all the hatred that's been perpetuated throughout the generations. Good education seems like it might be part of that picture - and some of the kinds of programs and volunteerism that can be supported in a caring and intelligent new administration...hint, hint... :)

This is precisely the problem with a black candidacy. A summer spent in Alabama some time back yielded the info that Republicans had asked Condi Rice about a presidential bid and that she had declined on the grounds that she already had been told that her first campaign visit in AL would be her last day in this world, or a paraphrase thereof.

Ironically, thirty minutes before the announcement of the assassination attempt, I had the dubious privilege of listening to my boss state that he wanted to "cut open Obams's head and let the demons out" and hearing his prison-educated buddy describe his desire to rape the man.

The old, racist South is not dead. The bitter irony is that this loser plot probably will cost Obama votes from folks who would rather see him "live long and prosper". I refuse to vote for either candidate but don't wish to see either assassinated.

As a Military Historian, I am instantly reminded that creatures such as these IMHO s**t on the memory of every last American of colour who died fighting for our country in defense of liberty, starting with the Revolution and right up to the present day. Your boss and co-worker also insult their memories IMHO, as they do those of my father and uncles who served our country in the same cause during WW2 fighting against the very racist tyranny these two clowns venerate.

I happen to be an independent; who I vote for is my own business. I would hope that at the very least you'll *vote,* whether or not the two major party candidates are to your liking or not. If you do not vote, then the self-appointed leaders of these two creatures have IMHO won another victory in their perverted cause to destroy everything honest Americans hold near and dear, most especially our liberty.

Go vote! Too many good Americans have died in the cause of liberty for you not to, especially in the face of such hate and ignorance as creatures such as your boss and co-worker spew.

There's two more who won't be voting for McCain.

I like how they knew they couldn't succeed ... shows a sense of reality not often seen among white supremacists.

For all the bird-brain folks out there who want the government to dictate a women's reproduction, I suggest it's also in the best interest of any unborn child to implement mandatory education and licensing for potential parents. In my mind, any parent who raises a child in such a vile climate as to create this kind of young adult is abusive and not fit to be a parent in the first place.

Are these people the same kinds of terrorists that Sarah Palin accused Senator Obama of "palling around" with, except the domestic brand? Are these the types of people who Senator McCain is so proud of having at his rallies? Of course this is disturbing news, but Senator Obama has been dealing with this kind of hate since he announced his candidacy and has had secret service personnel with him by his side at all times. I trust that our government will take care of him and give their lives to protect him, just as they are supposed to do. We cannot lose focus and operate in fear of any kind. Fear is nothing but false evidence appearing real. Since the Republicans don't have the corner on prayer, we just need to pray for Senator Obama's safety and for the hearts of all people in this country to not be filled with hate.

Since this Christian nation is so big on the Word of God, we need to believe what His Word says, "no weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper." (Isaiah 54:17 NKJV) God's will is for Barack Obama will take place not matter what anyone says or does. Just keep him lifted up in prayer and he will be just fine, just like the rest of us! We need to practice the faith we claim to have!!

Vote early for Obama/Biden '08!!

It is not surprising that the virulent rhetoric being spewed by so called talk radio hosts would
incite frightening and potentially violent reaction from extremist followers who hang on every word
as a call to action. Yesterday, Michael Savage crossed every boundary and trancended his commentary into the world of HATE RADIO. In desperation and anger, He referred to Barak Obama
as a "big eared marxist". He suggested that Barak was the equivalent of Pol Pot...responsible for the deaths of millions of Cambodians. He called Obama the equivalent of Hitler and Stalin, and warned his listeners that an Obama administration would destry the constitution, repress free speach, and incarcirate in camps, all opposition to his supposed marxist ideology.
Savage's tirade was irresponsible, racist, incendiary, and was carefully crafted propaganda
designed to breed fearful and violent reaction from his constituents, I find it diffucult yo understand
how Savage's behavior is not called out and condemned by his sponsors.

I agree that Savage is over the top sometimes but based on what you just described, it did not sound racist. Comparing Barack to Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot isn't racist. When the left compared Bush to Hitler eroneously, did that mean they are racist?

If Obama is president, I wish he would concentrate on getting some of these people educated. In the city and rural areas, young men without education and direction pick up guns to prove they are men.
The Palin rhetoric is fanning the flames of ignorance.

That is exactly what it was intended to do. No sane thinking person could take any of it seriously. Now they claim that was NOT their intention and they didn't know that so many people would react so violently. No one believes that-in fact their stated aim was to inflame the voters and appeal to "low information "(tranlslate: ignorant) people-but at the very least it shows a lack of judgement and a lack of concern for the possible results-certainly not desirable qualities iin leadership.

This is what McCain's rants are giving power to. Bush forgot the terrorists here in America, McCain is counting on them.

Ironically, McCain latest use of the word 'fight' to summon up the power to change things, belies the hidden and subtle notion of what he implies by the use of 'fight'; he gives his audience a sense that 'fight' means, fighting the Democrats. McCain's problem is that most Americans believe that if there is any fighting to be done, it must be against him and the republican party, not on their behalf.

But, more pointedly the use of 'fighting' is not what Americans need after we are in a ditch, we need folks who can think and reason, and compromise when necessary to address our problems in mature terms that does not cause us to fight each other, as much as it causes us to agree about what are the solutions we must use to overcome these problems.

The word fight also implies there is that republican boogeyman narrative of 'us v. them' that someone is right and someone is wrong, which feeds into the mentality of the disturbed who gravitate towards guns and violence, abetted by the use of 'fighting'.

Exactly what Nixon did. "Us vs. Them. " " The Enemy". When the Watergate scandal broke people were appalled that Nixonians were referring to the Democrats-OTHER AMERICANS. The Rovians have escalated to an even more extreme and dangerous level-but now people seems to have become so cynical as to see it as poitics as usual.

Senator Obama and the Obama -Biden ticket give speeches while the McCain -Palin ticket holds rallies .When politicians use rhetoric instead of simply stating the the facts of their proposals,it gives way to these kinds of violent plots and schemes. When political speeches such as 'our plan is to increase taxes on these sectors by 3 to for percent ' are replaced by incendiary rhetoric such as 'do you want someone tellin' you how to spend yer muney?? -Do you want this and that and the other thing changin yer way uh life? well do ya?? ' -the rhetorical questions and incendiary remarks turn a political speech into a literal ' pep rally ' for haters the remarks sow the fear of the unknown into the listener. The McCain -Palin ticket has been campaigning (fear mongering ,race baiting ,red scaring and misinforming is more accurate) this way for months and people have already been reported shouting violent epithets in the convenient and timely pauses left at the end of each rhetorical question asked by the McCain Palin ticket. This approaches the definition of incitement to riot and is not at all presidential. This most recent thwarted plot of a violence spree is the next step ,a teenage plan in response to childish public speaking, and childish campaigning. Both actions deserve adult punishments.

I think jail is too good for these two, if they carried out their plans, many would be dead.I know there are more like them out there, so it`s time to make a strong example of the consequences of this behavior.
