Obama Mask Listed As "Terrorist Costume" On Amazon

I had heard from a friend that searching on Amazon.com for "terrorist costume" would yield but one costume -- a Barack Obama mask.

Figuring it was a joke, I had to try it for myself. After entering "terrorist costume" in to the "Apparel & Accessories" search box at Amazon, however, the search results were less than funny. Sure enough, there was but one result, a Barack Obama mask selling for $49.95.

Since this story has been making a buzz on teh internets, Amazon.com has fixed the "terrorist" listing. I wonder if they will issue an apology?

Before taking it out on Amazon, let's find out if it was done by a third-party vendor on their site. If the third-party vendor selects the tags when they put the item up, Amazon wouldn't know about it until it was brought to their attention. I'd like to hear their side before I decide to stop buying from Amazon.

That would mean accountability.

They took it down. They may have a flawed system that occasionally allows things like this to filter through, but if a third party vendor puts it up, Amazon has no way of knowing until it's flagged.

I'm really tired of knee-jerk reactions. This is something I expect from the right-wing nutjobs. We need to be reasonable, thoughtful and informed before making decisions/­condemnati­ons. I think that's the example that Obama sets. We'd be wise to follow it.

In all fairness to Amazon, an item like this, including search tags, is posted by an independent merchant. As soon as a user flags it as offensive, racist or "hate speech," Amazon will remove it.
