Oxdown Gazette:

I had heard from a friend that searching on Amazon.com for "terrorist costume" would yield but one costume -- a Barack Obama mask.

Figuring it was a joke, I had to try it for myself. After entering "terrorist costume" in to the "Apparel & Accessories" search box at Amazon, however, the search results were less than funny. Sure enough, there was but one result, a Barack Obama mask selling for $49.95.

...

Since this story has been making a buzz on teh internets, Amazon.com has fixed the "terrorist" listing. I wonder if they will issue an apology?

I spend a fortune on books. Amazon just lost me. I am switching to Barnes&Noble.

Agreed. If you do that search now, you actually get a McCain mask. That is just a cover and I'm done with them.

Uh, you might want to check up on B&N's background as well.... I've heard of some pretty shady dealings with them. No sources right now, but please do your due diligence.

It's a good thing Obama doesn't seem to be the petulant type, because a whole lotta people would be in trouble come Nov. 5th if he was...ridiculous, I NEVER called Dubya a terrorist, even though his existence terrorizes me!

That's okay. Every election the mask that sells the most wins the election. Obama is winning!!!

I just sent Amazon an email and told them I would never spend another dime with them! Shame on them!

boomhaeur you are missing the point.

I don't care what caused this problem and the technicalities behind it. What I care about is that AMAZON.com facilitated this disgraceful activity on their website, using their technology. For this they should be held accountable and we must demand a public apology for this.

Folks, this is a presidential candidate we are talking about. What amazon did was basically get down in the gutter with the republican party.

They deserve to lose our business, unless they come out with a public apology.

Not this time we will let these guys run over us. Get a backbone and stand up against this stuff.

"Folks, this is a presidential candidate we are talking about. What amazon did was basically get down in the gutter with the republican party."

Uh, if you search for terrorist right now ... you'll see a John McCain mask.

Is Amazon now getting down in the gutter with the democratic party? No. It's just immature users of Amazon.

Should ISP's be held responsible because someone writes/transmits something anti-Obama or anti-McCain over their "technology"?

Bottomline is neither should be listed as a 'terrorist'.............it is shameful and in very poor taste.
But at the end of the day, if we boycott them maybe they will get the hint.

Actually, the fact that a McCain mask now comes up makes it even more disturbing and forces me to boycott amazon all together!!! Disgraceful!!!

Ok... ah maybe the free market means you can buy a McCain or Obama mask and do whatever. Frankly I would like to see the "Dirty VP" costume a guy at work says is out there..

I just tried searching Amazon for "terrorist costume." I saw no sign of Obama, but the third item in my search result was a McSame mask!

I checked, and it doesn't seem to be there anymore
I doubt it was Amazon's fault. It was the fault of the rac.ist person who was selling the mask, or worse yet, the entire company that decided to list product as such.

Amazon confirmed the product had been available. The snail mail address for Amazon Customer Service is:

172 Trade Street
Lexington, Ky
40511

Everyone should send their thoughts and concerns formally to this address.

Apparently someone has taken action and done the reverse now. A McCain mask comes up if you search for 'terrorist costume'.

Amazon please take that one down as well or modify the item's tags. We can't stoop to their level. Obama hasn't done it and that is part of the reason he is in the lead in the polls.

GO VOTE EARLY FOR OBAMA THEN VOLUNTEER!!!

People canceling Amazon accounts need to chill... this was basically a result of the public tagging system they have on the site where people can suggest their own tags/keywords for the products.

I ran the search just now and McCain's mask shows up instead. If you check out the product page all the keywords are just as bad as I'm sure the Obama mask's were...

Amazon did the right thing and fixed the questionable tags.

And hopefully their vetting system for *posting* tags.

If HuffPost can, it should be no problem for a giant, international website like Amazon, dontcha think?

cmon guys, it's not Amazon's fault for what a bunch of loony users tagged the mask with.

You guys can easily go tag the McCain mask with "crazy old man" "liar" "criminal" etc...

Amazon even fixed the problem right away when it was reported ... I just think you guys saying "i'll never shop at Amazon again," are jumping the gun a little too quick.
