Obama Mask Listed As "Terrorist Costume" On Amazon

I had heard from a friend that searching on Amazon.com for "terrorist costume" would yield but one costume -- a Barack Obama mask.

Figuring it was a joke, I had to try it for myself. After entering "terrorist costume" in to the "Apparel & Accessories" search box at Amazon, however, the search results were less than funny. Sure enough, there was but one result, a Barack Obama mask selling for $49.95.

Since this story has been making a buzz on teh internets, Amazon.com has fixed the "terrorist" listing. I wonder if they will issue an apology?

I am amused by all of the utrage over this "tag" of BO's mask...the libs on this site went beserk!! I am just wondering if this hit a little too close to home, explaining the outrage....you know, BO has some ??? by his name in this department , especially when it comes to his friends...

She isn't advocating censorship. What she is doing is exercising her right, that if offended by something, she will not personally support them by shopping there. No where in her post did she ask others to also cancel their account. THAT might be getting closer to censorship, though I would consider it just a boycott and that's as American as freedom of speech.

amazon says upper management knows and they apologized to me. Users do this. However I dont think it is an overreaction given the hateful, dishonest, negative mud slinging campaign of McCain. It is not a small thing to label a presidential candidate a terrorist and the fact that it is done so readily without embarrassment says a great deal about the "pride" that McCain and Palin take in their supporters. If they would denounce this we would see less of it but the fact is they have encouraged it and now revel in it. Amazon was a bit player in the hate play of the Republican party. Shame on anyone that thinks this is funny.

Geez, folks! These masks can be made to be very realistic or characterized! Unless there is something in the wording of the listing that denotes terrorism, there is nothing wrong with any of those masks.

their IT department head should be severely embarrassed for not employing simple word filters applied to customer created key words for products. VERY amateurish to not have foreseen mischief there. I don't do a great deal of biz with Amazon so I don't need to threaten boycott but this definitely gives more weight to all the donations they make to the RNC and its candidates and I will absolutely remember this.

Ebay has a very understaffed and poor idea of a "Free market" sales reviewing system-- that's why so many less than honest things end up for sale there. As someone who had an account there in the past (2006) and purchased more than 160 items - at least 1/3rd of which had improper labeling or outright fraud involved in their description - I can speak from experience.

On these masks and similar ones in the past (I can recall when Richard Nixon was a mask at Halloween, and also Jane Fonda) - they say more about the seller and buyer than the person the mask portrays... sick minds.

Everyone who is urging restraint, a clear head, and diplomacy in its treatment of amazon is correct. Thank you. I was wrong to assume immediately that amazon was responsible for the tagging of the mask and to tell them I would no longer do business with them. If Obama wins the Presidency (in a week!), I hope that I can follow his example of cool-headedness and respect in my communications with others and with people who disagree with me or displease me. As this amazon incident reminds me, I certainly have to work on those skills. If the Democrats' win is as big as is now predicted, my personal agenda is help heal divisions and focus on what we all have in common and want as Americans as we move forward. That means acting with a cool head, and not a hot head, and no bullying. Just like my favorite candidate.

Amazon tagging system is inherently flawed and lends itself to these types of issues. As a business it is their responsiblity to create some sort of watch dog system to prevent these issues. These incidents took place on their system, on their website, promoting hate and false information.

Boycotting Amazon.com for this is futile. They did not post the tags. It would be like banning Huffpost because some people come and post awful things in the comment sections.
