CANTON, Ohio — Closing his case for the presidency, Barack Obama presented himself Monday as a unifier for an embattled country, promising to deliver days of "hope over fear."

Obama's bid for a knockout blow, delivered in the vitally competitive state of Ohio, was not bare-knuckled. Rather, buoyed by front-runner status and frenetic crowds, Obama used the moment to get beyond the sparring with John McCain and restore a theme of inspiration.

"In one week, we can choose hope over fear, unity over division, the promise of change over the power of the status quo," Obama said. "In one week, we can come together as one nation, and one people, and once more choose our better history. That's what's at stake."

The speech also was aimed at positioning Obama as a statesman-in-waiting. His soaring language was a throwback to a time before the conversation drew more specific and ugly.

"The change we need isn't just about new programs and policies," Obama said to a roaring crowd at Canton's civic center. "It's about a new attitude, it's about new politics _ a politics that calls on our better angels instead of encouraging our worst instincts."

Polls shows Obama ahead, but in a tight race, with McCain in Ohio. No Democrat has won the presidency without the support of the state since John F. Kennedy in 1960.

With valuable campaign time slipping away, Obama and McCain both spent Monday mining for support in Ohio and neighboring Pennsylvania. Either state could swing the election.

Obama repeated his speech in Pittsburgh, where he was greeted by deafening cheers.

Story continues below

Broadening the language of his daily campaign routine, Obama tried to remind voters why he ran in the first place. He summoned all the rhetorical flair for which he has become known.

Obama spoke of restoring a sense of higher purpose to the country. He kicked up patriotic echoes of his 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention that put him on a national stage. He said America is about "seeing the highest mountaintop from the deepest of valleys."

To be sure, though, Obama took his shots at McCain. He accused his rival of resorting to smear tactics in a desperate attempt to win votes.

"Sen. McCain might be worried about losing an election, but I'm worried about Americans who are losing their homes, and their jobs, and their life savings," Obama said. "I can take one more week of John McCain's attacks, but this country can't take four more years of the same old politics and the same failed policies. It's time for something new."

McCain held his own campaign event in Ohio. In Cleveland, he told voters his economic plan would generate jobs, recharge the stock market and help people keep their homes.

The Republican candidate also ridiculed Obama's argument that his tax plan was based on fairness. "There's nothing fair about driving our economy into the ground and we all suffer when that happens," said McCain.

Obama has been fending off criticism that his plans to raise the tax rate on wealthier people _ and his comment about redistributing wealth _ amounts to socialism.

Obama shot back Monday that he wanted to offer help for the middle class, and make sure that businesses had customers who could afford to spend.

"That's how we've always grown the American economy _ from the bottom-up," he said. "John McCain calls this socialism. I call it opportunity."

Obama also spelled out a foreign policy agenda that, again, painted him as a needed change from Bush and McCain. Such topics have been dwarfed by economic concerns for months.

Obama said flatly he would end the war in Iraq and restore America's moral standing.

"I will never hesitate to defend this nation," he said. "But I will only send our troops into harm's way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need in battle, and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home."

The campaign called Obama's speech nothing less than a closing argument. The jury is out, though, until the election on Nov 4., and McCain vows to pull out a late victory.

Before leaving Pittsburgh, Obama popped into a local campaign office and spoke by phone with voters after volunteers placed calls for him. He said later that four of the five people he talked to backed him; one voter who kept him on the phone a while remained unsure.

"We can't let up," Obama told the volunteers. "Let's close the deal."

Obama's message of hope came on the day federal law enforcement agents reported breaking up a plot by two neo-Nazi skinheads to assassinate him and shoot or decapitate 88 black people. His campaign had no comment.

How McCain can say that a Democratic President would "run our economy into the ground" is baffling! Sheer bulls**t!

Our last democratic president left us with a huge surplus, a booming economy and far more respect with our allies. Our Republican president squandered that and the feeling of good will we had from the international community after 9-11...and he tore down 8 years of social progress in just a few short months! (Amazing!)

How, exactly, after this current scandalous downturn on Wall Street, which has wrecked economies around the world, can McCain say ANYTHING about the other party running ANYTHING into the ground?!?!?!

Ridiculous, scare tactic, showmanship!

Vote for integrity!!!

Vote Obama/Biden 2008!

Vote now, before it's too late!

For example, the stock market does much better under Democrats than republicans. http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/columnist/krantz/2005-12-02-presidents_x.htm

Using the Dow Jones industrial average as the benchmark, Stock Trader's Almanac shows a $10,000 investment compounded during Democratic presidencies since 1901 would be worth $279,705 after 48 years. The same $10,000 investment during 56 Republican years would have been worth just $78,699.

To break it down, the market return under Democrats is 13.3% a year. Under republicans it's only 6.9% a year. Astoundingly the market return under Democrats is almost twice that of republicans!

And these numbers don't include the meltdown under the last four years of George Bush!

Don't feel bad, there are always options. For example, you could vote for the Libertarian Bob Barr. I think he would be a much better choice than McCain.

So Obama's speeches are about hope and unity. Meanwhile McCain and Palin are talking about Obama being a socialist, and a "tax and spend liberal."

His speech today was excellent.

Seriously, and I am not being flippant here, I have no idea why anyone would vote for McCain/Palin. Haven't the American people seen enough of this kind of cr_ap? I know I have.

ohio is an at will state.......EMPs can be fire for any reason as long as the EMP is not a protected class......in some firings you do not have to give a reason........My attorney stated i could even give bo imminent taxes to my company as the reason.......i have already trimmed all family and highly compensated EMPs from employment rolls.......I will pay them will dividends.......payroll dollars just were cuts amazingly.......now unemployment tax, worker comp and my share of the social security........the EMPs save on SSI, city tax.

6 EMPs i had to hire as consultants. in the event that bo does not get in i will rehire all former EMPs including myself

then maybe give bonuses out

there is a rumor started at the shop that if obama gets in bonuses with stop because of all the taxes he will implement and that i will cancel all health insurance........I have not answered anyone on it yet.......however I have changed the bonus date to Jan 21, 2009.......you should hear the EMPs discussion about obama now......It is very funny........the rumor has spread to my other locations......

oh boy i just wish i knew who started that rumor.........It is a shame those rumors move so fast......I have decided to end the rumor as quickly as possible i have scheduled a mandatory meeting for all EMPs Nov 5........that even started another rumor ......oh darn

A quote from Obama in his closing speech : "In one week, you can put an end to the politics that would divide a nation just to win an election; that tries to pit region against region, city against town, Republican against Democrat; that asks us to fear at a time when we need hope. In one week, at this defining moment in history, you can give this country the change we need.....In one week, we can choose hope over fear, unity over division, the promise of change over the power of the status quo. In one week, we can come together as one nation, and one people, and once more choose our better history. That’s what’s at stake. That’s what we’re fighting for."

I guess one would have to ask voters in "competitive" Ohio, at what point would you vote democrat? I mean, how many jobs have to lost, how many homes lost, how many programs cut that provide a safety net for working people? I guess what I'm asking is how bad do republicans have to treat you before you need a change? How the he// someone who punches a timeclock can vote republican is beyond me. You will consistently vote against your interests EVERY time.

wdw101 says "How many middle class people employ anyone?"
Well aside from the fact that most small business owners are middle class, all business groups need middle class people with disposable income to buy their goods and services! What business, large or small, is going to hire people because they get a tax break when there are no customers.
Capitalism works best with a large and well paid middle class, money flows upwards and the rich still get richer!
Treating workers as an expense rather than an asset is just business cutting it's own throat for short term gain.

McCain-Palin and their lies are one enemy of the Obama-Biden ticket. Complacency is the other. We still need to work hard for the next 7 days. The statements we make here are not changing anyone's vote.
We are speaking to the base. We have to do something practical to ensure Obama is elected.

This is a poem that I recieved in my e-mail today.

Author unknown.

'Twas the night before elections

*'Twas the night before elections*
*And all through the town*
*Tempers were flaring*
*Emotions all up and all down!*
**
*I, in my bathrobe*
*With "Buddy" in my lap*
*Had cut off the TV*
*I'm Tired of this political crap.*
**
*When all of a sudden*
*There arose such a noise*
*I peered out of my window*
*AND...Saw Obama and his boys*
**
*They had come for my wallet*
*They wanted my pay*
*To give to the others*
*Who hadn't worked a day!*
**
*He snatched up my money*
*And quick as a wink*
*Jumped back on his bandwagon*
*and I said..."what a FINK !
**
*He then rallied his henchmen*
*Who were pulling his cart*
*I could tell they were out*
*To tear my country apart!*
**
*' On Fannie, on Freddie, *
*On Biden and Ayers!*
*On Acorn, On Pelosi'*
*He screamed at the pairs!*
**
*They took off for his cause*
*As he flew out of sight*
*I heard him laugh at the nation*
*Who wouldn't stand up and fight!*
**
*So I leave you to think*
*On this one final note-*
*IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM*
*GET OUT AND VOTE!!!! :)

I would say that it is pretty obvious that Palin believes in redistibution of wealth as long as it gets redristributed toward her. Setting aside the clothes she claims will be given to charity, she was all for Alaskan taxpayers wealth being redistributed to her for 300+ nights spent AT HER OWN HOME and $20,000+ for airfare for her children on supposed state business. But I guess that's different than giving tax breaks to the real engines of our economy, the workers. We've been paying welfare to big business and the already wealthy for much longer than eight years.
And to OHIOMARK, it is the working people who will get these tax breaks, not those who don't work, get a brain.

Voting is one of our most cherished rights as Americans' yet, voting is also the most taken for granted. People do not seem to grasp the concept that the vote of the silent is more powerful than the voter at the poll. And to really dampen the spirit, even less people vote in State elections where their vote is more significant, no electoral college stands between constituent and official. Perhaps as part of our education reform we should promote more American History lessons. Maybe even have those "volunteer service students" work the voting polls. Both candidates seem to be calling to "get out the vote" but, is that really what Washington wants? I think Washington has been very happy with the status quo. Remember, the words of T.J. "...whenever any form of government becomes destructive...it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government..." With an economy in shambles and two wars, I can't think of a better time for Americans' to rise up and reclaim their country!

Interesting analogy with a boat load of truth in it:

Yesterday on my way to lunch at Doe's, I passed one of the homeless guys in that area, with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money."

Once in the Doe's my waiter had on a "Obama 08" tee shirt.

When the bill came, I decided not to tip the waiter and explained to him while he had given me exceptional service, that his tee shirt made me feel he obviously believes in Senator Obama's plan to redistribute the wealth. I told him I was going to redistribute his tip to someone that I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. He stood there in disbelief and angrily stormed away.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $3 and told him to thank the waiter inside, as I had decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy looked at me in disbelief but seemed grateful.

As I got in my truck, I realized this rather unscientific redistribution experiment had left the homeless guy quite happy for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn.

Well, I guess this redistribution of wealth is going to take a while to catch on, with those doing the work.

And the next time you go to "Doe's" I hope you like the "Special Sauce".

I don't see why people who are not in the top 5% of income in this country aren't behind Barack's tax plan. Like 3-6% more tax is going to kill the $250,000 and over crowd, and really if you look at it in principle he's actually trying to make Trickle Down Economics work.

All the "relief" checks to the lower and middle class are most likely going to be directly injected back into the economy where as most of the upper class would just stick it into their own investment portfolios or let it sit in their savings.
