LEESBURG, Va. — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin told a cheering crowd Monday that Democrats would raise taxes and "punish hard work" if Virginia voters break a 44-year preference for GOP presidents and help send Barack Obama to the White House.

Palin, Republican John McCain's running mate, also tried to burnish her foreign policy credentials by meeting with Israel's ambassador to the United States, apologizing for the session's delay.

"I look forward to hearing about your work with the Jewish Agency and all the plans that we have," Palin told Ambassador Sallai Meridor. "We'll be working together."

She apparently was referring to the Jewish Agency for Israel, an organization of which Meridor was formerly chairman.

Israeli embassy officials said Palin and Meridor discussed relations between the United States and Israel and the Iranian nuclear threat. They added that Meridor also discussed ongoing peace efforts in the Middle East and noted that he was to talk with Palin's Democratic counterpart, Sen. Joe Biden, later Monday.

After meeting Meridor, Palin took a short bus ride through the tony Lansdowne development in Loudoun County _ a battleground county in Virginia and a neighborhood where Obama yard signs appeared to outnumber McCain signs _ to an enthusiastic rally that drew more than 5,000 supporters.

Palin was introduced by Tito Munoz, a small-business owner from neighboring Prince William County, whom Palin referred to as "Tito the Builder." He wore a yellow hard hat and drew chants of "Tito, Tito."

"Not since the Jackson Five has the name 'Tito' been used so often," Palin said.

Palin portrayed Obama as "on the side of bigger, more controlling government" and warned that an Obama White House would leave the Democratic agenda in Congress unchecked.

"If big government spenders control the House and Senate and, heaven forbid, the White House, they will have a monopoly of power," she said.

"You understand that his plan to redistribute wealth will, ultimately, punish hard work, and it discourages productivity, and it will stifle the entrepreneurial spirit that made this country the greatest country on earth."

Obama has proposed tax increases for workers who make more than $250,000 a year and tax cuts for the remaining 95 percent of workers and their families.

Palin's three-city tour through the Old Dominion was designed to upend Obama's lead in a state that hasn't voted for a Democratic president since 1964. Recent polls show Obama ahead in Virginia, home of the Confederate capital during the Civil War, and Democrats are on track to add to their congressional majorities.

At a later stop in Fredericksburg, Palin appeared before thousands of supporters who began arriving hours before gates opened to spectators. An overflow crowd watched her address broadcast on a large screen.

She again criticized Democratic tax proposals. "You know they're coming after you folks," Palin said as rain began to fall.

At a chilly nighttime outdoor rally in Salem, in the conservative southwestern part of the state, Palin promised an "all-of-the-above" solution to the energy crisis, drawing elevated cheers from the crowd of 12,000 when she included "coal, absolutely."

"That's right, drill, baby, drill," she said as the crowd began chanting. "And mine, baby, mine."

"Mine, Baby, mine?" If that isn't a subliminal message from White House Barbie to Grandpa McCain, I don't know what is. And, "You know they're coming after you folks?" Sounds like she's trying to lather up a lynch mob in a place where some "folks" still believe in it. (I know. I used to live there.) Don't know that my cringe factor can take a whole week more!

I love the "authentic" "hand-made" pink signs displayed behind her. At another rally, the organizers took away people's actual signs and handed out party-prepared ones ...

Sarah Palin came to Salem, Virginia, last night and "spoke" to around 15,000 supporters. A week ago Obama spoke to around 6,500 supporters in Roanoke.

I'd just like to point out that Salem is the same town that was famously duped into allowing Borat to mangle the National Anthem before a rodeo. [Remember: "President Bush will drink the blood of Iraqi children!"]

Duped again.

15k in Salem? That's like, what, the entire town of Pulaski went to the rally?

The southwestern part of the state is a republican given, save a couple of small college towns. The fact that she's even there is telling. Roanoke makes a lot more sense for either candidate. Maybe she should hit Floyd, too. Big battle ground there ... boo-ya

Sarah Palin is a joke! When I heard her scoff at the money spent on research using fruit flies, I was appalled. How fr iggin dumb can she get? What barrel did she roll out of? She is clearly uninformed and it is those very same uninformed republicans who identify with her and will vote for the dummy!

Appalled is correct, when you consider that the Mediterranean Fruit Fly has 78% of the same DNA as human beings.

Yup. Waste your drying-up money on 5:15 am ads. Don't waste them on 5:15 PM ads...You'll get the bovine support for sure!

Except cows can't vote.

The "Obama is a Redistributer" wingnut meme is a freaking joke and it reeks of desperation.

The Rethugs and McCain have been redistributating wealth to the super rich for years.

Virginia, this is what could happen if Palin becomes President. Have fun with it!

A quote from Obama in his closing speech : "In one week, you can put an end to the politics that would divide a nation just to win an election; that tries to pit region against region, city against town, Republican against Democrat; that asks us to fear at a time when we need hope. In one week, at this defining moment in history, you can give this country the change we need. In one week, we can choose hope over fear, unity over division, the promise of change over the power of the status quo. In one week, we can come together as one nation, and one people, and once more choose our better history. That’s what’s at stake. That’s what we’re fighting for."

Now GO VOTE!

I am not familiar with the Virginia geography - Does anyone know if any of her rallies are near Hampton Roads, Virginia, where the following misleading flier was distributed to democrats?

Tony Lansdowne -- where there aren't that many Virginians. Lots of people who have moved in from other states. Heck, other countries. I have neighbors who are from Iran! Muslims! Good thing Palin didn't get out of the bus. She might be shocked to see who actually lives in Virginia these days. It ain't Joe the Plumber.

They don't use plumbers in the "real virginia."

They have outhouses.
