DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — Suspected U.S. missiles killed 20 people at the house of a Taliban commander near the Afghan border on Monday, the latest volley in a two-month onslaught on militant bases inside Pakistan, officials said.

Missile attacks have killed at least two senior al-Qaida commanders in Pakistan's wild border zone this year, putting some pressure on extremist groups accused of planning attacks in Afghanistan _ and perhaps terror strikes in the West.

However, a marked uptick in their frequency has badly strained America's seven-year alliance with Pakistan, where rising violence is exacerbating economic problems gnawing at the nuclear-armed Islamic republic's stability.

The reported missile strike occurred in South Waziristan, part of a belt of tribally governed territory considered a possible hiding place for Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri.

Two intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to media on the record, said the targeted house in Mandata Raghzai village belonged to a lieutenant of local Taliban chief Maulvi Nazir.

The officials cited reports from agents and informers in the area. They said the identity of as many as 20 bodies pulled from the rubble was not immediately clear.

Mohammad Noor Wazir a resident of a nearby village, said he watched from a distance as militants surrounded the scene and loaded at least 15 corpses into vehicles that drove away.

Three other victims were buried in the village cemetery, including a brother of the owner of the destroyed house, Wazir told The Associated Press by telephone.

American commanders complain that Pakistani forces have not put enough pressure on militant strongholds on their territory.

In a reflection of that frustration, U.S. military and CIA drones that patrol the frontier region are believed to have carried out at least 15 strikes since mid-August. The United States rarely confirms or denies involvement.

Pakistan's new leaders have protested the missile strikes _ as well as a highly unusual raid by helicopter-borne commandos in September _ as unacceptable violations of their sovereignty.

In a resolution adopted Monday, Pakistani senators condemned the U.S. drone attacks, saying they caused "immense" loss of life and were undermining Pakistan's efforts to defuse militancy through dialogue.

The government should take "more effective measures" to stop such attacks, it said, without recommending any specific action beyond official protests to Washington and NATO.

In other violence on Monday, a car bomb exploded in a parking lot in the frontier city of Quetta, killing a rickshaw driver and another unidentified person and injuring 10 others, while the army said it killed 10 militants in the troubled Swat valley.

Pakistan's military is involved in heavy fighting with militants in the Bajur region as well as in Swat. It claims to have killed 1,500 insurgents in a two-month offensive in Bajur that has drawn U.S. praise.

Yet many Pakistani are weary of a war they believe is being fought at America's behest and the government has offered to negotiate with any militant group willing to renounced violence.

"There is an increasing realization that the use of force alone cannot yield the desired results," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told a gathering of Pakistani and Afghan tribal elders.

The meeting in Islamabad was part of a dialogue process begun last year in hopes that it could ease often strained relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has repeatedly accused Pakistan, which backed the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan prior to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on America, of secretly continuing to aid the militants as a way to exert influence over its poorer neighbor.

Pakistan denies the charge. However, it has also seized on recent indications that Afghanistan's government is also seeking talks with the Taliban to press for compromise.

How many strikes into Pakistan can we get away with before the Muslim population there decide they've "had enough" and donate a nuke to terrorists who oppose the united states?

If there are terrorist in the building you are working in, you may want to take a leave of absence until January 21st.

After January 21, no worries, you and the terrorists will be safe.

If I didn't know any better, I would think this administration has gone on a drunken binge and are trying to see how many countries they can attack, how many expensive weapons they can destroy so that we will have to replace them, and how many problems they can create to take our mind off of the fleecing we're taking with the bailout deal, and they're trying to do it all before November 20, 2009.

War Journal, by Richard Engels (sp?) should be required reading for all of us. Speaking of an October suprise, could it be gas prices? Americans typically become happy and complacent when gas prices are low. It sounds ridiculous but, it is possible.

It is a shame but also an undeniable fact that, Pres.Bush still has 86 days left in the Commander in Chief. Thatm entitles him the ability to make the world in general, and our brave troops less safe. The Syrians,Pakistani, Afghanistani, andIraqi people will just have to pray that nothing too drastic is done in the waining hrs of this dying admin.
Thank goodness that the world really do LOVE AMERICA and believe maybe even more than Americans do that. Theese last 8yrs have been an abberation in US history and, the power of the U.S. system is the peaceful change of Governmental policy that is possible every 4yrs. They stole the last election but this time President. BARACK OBAMA WILL SAVE US ALL!

Agreed, do you think t er ro ism ends when Obama gets in? We'll still be over there, there will still be a fight. For anyone to think other wise when Obama wins is not thinking clearly...at all

That is why Democrats hate Bush so much, he stole the election...its been 8 yrs and you have felt this way the entire time, its really sad, I am voting McCain, but when Obama wins, you wont see me hating Obama for 4-8 yrs...I will support him bc he is our elected Pres. I may not agree with him, but I pray that he does good things to get the country in the right direction

On other hand, Dems want to see nothing more than Bush fail, Iraq fail, the economy fail, it all equals power for them, at the cost of the country and a divided nation, media has done a good job, but as an American you should be ashamed of Dem leadership.

You need to look up terms like: habeas corpus, Geneva Convention, 3 EQUAL branches of government, preventive war (based on thin evidence and lies)

Bush DID fail us. He failed you and me and all Americans.

Let's start lobbing missiles into your backyard shall we Earl and see how you like it.. You can't just go attacking sovereign countries whenever you feel like it.. Perhaps kill 1 or 2 terrorists today but create hundreds more for tomorrow. This is terrorism pure and simple....

I hear this argument, and I can see where you're coming from, but you also forget that they just dont go away, they see us as the threat and will fight to the death until they have their way, so what options do that leave us with?

We cant assume just leaving them be will solve the problem. This is a problem thats been around for 50 yrs, and will probably be around for another 50 yrs because it got so out of hand and there was a lack of urgency..people forget we were attacked in the 80s 90s and 2000s...we just denied it existed from the 90s on until we had a huge wake up call

"This is a problem thats been around for 50 yrs" ... So what do you call the "problem" Middle Easterners have had to deal with for the last 100 years??!!

Robert Fisk quoting a Baghdad baker:

Why are you"""you" meaning Western military""Why are you in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, French air base at Dushanbe running close as support for the British in Helmand province in Afghanistan? Why are your people going into Pakistan? Why are you in Afghanistan and Iraq? Why are you in Turkey? Why are you in Jordan and Egypt and Algeria? US Special Forces have a base outside Tamanrasset in the southern Sahara. Why are you in Bahrain? Why are you in Oman? Why are you in Yemen? Why are you in Qatar?

WHAT BUSINESS DO YOU HAVE????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND WHY SHOULDN'T PEOPLE REACT TO YOUR CONSTANT PRESENCE???!!!!

If your correct, then why are Afghans using cell phones to give these hideouts up? Tal.ban uses same tactics as in ir a q...scare everyone and threaten de.a.th to young child. That is not the way you win the hearts of the populous...my question to you is what happens if we did nothing, will they just go away?

We need to stay on the offensive in my opinion I agree that fearing a miss stri ke anytime would have some pyschological impact too...lets also not forget these people make it a point to surround themselves with children

These terr.orists have absolutely no idea how we are finding out where they are hiding, and that has to dr.ive a wedg.e between them as they would naturally s.uspect each other as being sp.ies. First, knock off the weird typing. Second, it's okay to attack wherever we please? On that theory, it was perfectly okay for Saddam Hussein to attack Kuwait.

Not when he would throw off the entire world economy controlling large supplies of oil, gas would have been $10/gal had that happened. I think we're losing sight of the point, we are not just attacking soverign nations. When bases are being set up near borders, do you just let it happen. Did Kennedy let USSR set up in Cuba? Feo, lets be intellectually honest here

I don't think Barack will continue this line of action. I'll bet on Obama practicing diplomacy. Bombing people is not the answer. And I don't want to hear anyone remind me of WWII and Japan. It has never been and never will be the answer. - it's an atrocity!
