As the election nears, examples of political dirty tricks are emerging with greater frequency.

On Tuesday, the Virginia Pilot reported that a phony Board of Elections flier was circulating the state "advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5." Voting, of course, is on the 4th only, creating fear among neutral observers and the Obama campaign that people were simply going to miss the opportunity to go to the polls.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, an anonymous flier was circulating in predominantly African-American neighborhoods in Philadelphia telling voters they could be arrested at the polls if they show up to vote with outstanding arrest warrants or unpaid parking tickets. This is also untrue.

Dirty tricks and phony fliers represent the dark underside of nearly every election. And certainly, when it comes to the current contest, these tactics started long ago. Last March, as Time Magazine noted, a letter was being sent around Colorado, warning that out-of-state students could not register if their parents claimed them as dependents in another state." One of the more common falsities making its way through email chains has warned voters in some states (updated below) that they will be turned away from the polls if they wore paraphernalia demonstrating their support for one particular candidate.

Since these antics are becoming more and more common we encourage readers to send in tips or episodes they have witnessed to the Huffington Post.

UPDATE: Several readers have pointed out that, in fact, several states do prohibit passive electioneering (buttons, t-shirts, etc.) in polling places. In Texas, for example, the law is as follows:

[A] person may not wear a badge, insignia, emblem, or other similar communicative device relating to a candidate, measure, or political party appearing on the ballot, or to the conduct of the election, in the polling place or within 100 feet of any outside door through which a voter may enter the building in which the polling place is located.

In my fine Texas town of nearly 30,000, I voted the first day of early voting. A long line of old white folks (like me) were lined up. Inside our cramped voting place stood an ARMED sheriff's deputy. Not one person of color was in the line I stood in, waiting to vote. Odd since this is cotton country and there are many African Americans in town. Unspoke intimidation I say, but of course I'm just l "blue boy" living in a "red state" and don't know the nuances of southern tradition. Maybe gun toting sheriff's are traditional in the southwest; keeps the riffraff home you know!

What is the name of your Texas town? I doubt they are stopping black people from voting in your town!

Did I say that. I said there was an intimidation factor. I also said riff raff. My point was there was a gun at my voting place. Doesn't that intimidate you? It does me.

They're probably waiting till Nov 5.

Why are you afraid of an ARMED peace officer?

Minorities are not going to continue to take abuses of our liberties.

If the GOP really want a fight (which is suggested by the hate they are stirring up) they just might get it!

Our jobs, pensions and dignity have been stripped away by a party who clearly never considered us equal in the first place.

You can't keep stepping on people's backs and not expect them to start fighting back.

Be CAREFUL. Be very CAREFUL...

Obama and the democrats are the ones stirring up this hate.
It has always worked for them.
After all aren't you guys always saying that we use fear?
We leave the hate to you.
Open your eyes.

The whole premise to this story is racist, do the perps. of these flyers believe that within the black community there are so many people with outstanding warants and parking tickets that discouraging them from voting would influence the election. Do they believe that African Americans have gone through the trials and tribulations of the last 400 years to allow a flyer or the threat of arrest to dissuade them from voting for the first African American President of the United States? Lets get serious folks.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:52 AM on 10/29/2008

Yeah, and the Republicans would know all that. They know blacks aren't as stupid as the democrats count on them being. In this election there have been numerous false claims made about hatred amongst Republicans. There is a very good chance that things like this flier are just more attempts by Obamaites to smear Republicans. The proof of that will be whether the perps are found. If they aren't found they're most probably Obamaites.

If you have friends or relatives who you think might be taken in by these dirty tricks, please warn them in advance what to expect and how to respond, or better yet escort them to the polling places if you can.

Unfortunately the Supreme Court 2000 decision set the precedent for the campaign strategy -
"if you can't win it - steal it" Which explains why the Hate Talk Express remains optimistic after driving off the road.

Of course, Ronny Raygun stole his first election by conspiring with the terrorists who were holding our embassy people.

That's right. And Bush flew in an SR71 to Iran to seal the deal!

2000 wasn't the first time an attempt was made to steal an election. JFK's daddy stole his election.
None of Gore's recounts left him as the winner. Gore's attempt to steal the election by changing the rules after the votes had been cast was the worst case of 'sore loser' ever seen.

The election workers CANNOT tell someone who shows up wearing an Obama or McCain t-shirt that they "cannot vote". The workers can and will ask the individual to remove the candidate-specific material or leave the polling site. If and when the individual returns with the shirt covered or inside out he or she can vote. Folks should save themselves some time and dress appropriately when at the polling site!

I have no problem with that restriction. It's been that way in Mich my whole life. But whoever produced that bogus flyer in VA saying Dems vote on Wednesday needs to serve life in prison.

Here in Michigan, we are not taking any chances. A huge turnout is expected. A coalition (ACLU, NAACP, etc.) is dispatching hundreds of volunteer poll watchers across metro Detroit next Tuesday…and have assembled legal teams to mount challenges if they witness wrongdoing. The support for Obama is overwhelming even in traditional republican areas. Obama/Biden signs, bumper stickers are popping up everywhere.

"Earlier this month, meanwhile, an anonymous flier was circulating in predominantly African-American neighborhoods in Philadelphia telling voters they could be arrested at the polls if they show up to vote with outstanding arrest warrants or unpaid parking tickets. This is also untrue"

Why is this untrue? If they are criminals they SHOULD be arrested...black, white or green.

Mezzeta, you don't go to jail for unpaid parking tickets. That is not a criminal offense. You may get a suspended driver's license and doubled parking fines as a penalty. And...an outstanding warrant couldn't be criminally offensive if law enforcement procrastinates and waits 'til election day to arrest an offender. If so, then you've got a slothful, incompetent police department. But, that's not the point. The point is there is systemic voter suppression using race-baiting psychological intimidation and trickery in areas of non-white voters. And...it's not going to work - this time!

You, Mezzeta, need a better understanding of the issue here. It's not about catching "criminals" (something our country has more of than any nation on earth due to our weird drug laws)....it is about voter suppression and the dirty tricks used as a means to that end.

Bone up on Florida 2000 and Ohio 2004 before offering your next comment, please.

Obama will probably work to get his drug of choice legalized.
That will be the FAIR way to reduce the prison population.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:46 PM on 10/29/2008

Democrats designed the Butterfly Ballot.
None of the allegations of voter suppression were verified.
Gore was a sore loser.
None of the independent recounts changed the results.
