Msnbc Primetime

MSNBC beat CNN in prime time for the month of October, led by the breakout success of "The Rachel Maddow Show," which brought MSNBC its first-ever victory over CNN in the 9PM hour.

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul J. Gough reports:

MSNBC has throttled into second place in three hours of cable news primetime, beating CNN for the month of October.

Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it. But MSNBC turned in its best primetime performance in its 12-year history in the adults 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. It surpassed CNN for second place between 7-10 p.m. with "Hardball," "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show."

MSNBC GM Phil Griffin said Monday that it's a historic placement for the network and part of MSNBC's long-term strategy when it set out on this course two years ago.

"We wanted to challenge CNN and become a player by the election," Griffin said. "Guess what? In the months leading into the election, we beat CNN."

Griffin also spoke to TVNewser, saying:

"We've never had a performance like this in our history. We tamed the giant of Larry King."

The Numbers
7PM
"Hardball": 458,000 (A25-54)
"Lou Dobbs Tonight": 428,000 (A25-54)

8PM
"Countdown with Keith Olbermann": 784,000 (A25-54)
"Campbell Brown": 582,000 (A25-54)

9PM
"The Rachel Maddow Show": 700,000 (A25-54)
"Larry King Live": 673,000 (A25-54)

Of course, with MSNBC's growing success comes a target on its back, and CNN President Jon Klein said in a statement that he expects CNN's nonpartisan programming to win out once the passions of the election season have subsided:

CNN is beating MSNBC in primetime, we are No. 1 in all cable news at 10 p.m., and it is no surprise that their partisan approach will see a bump a month before the election. We think our objective, post-partisan approach will have better long-term results.

Such a sentiment was echoed by TV executives on both sides of the political aisle at a media luncheon. The Hollywood Reporter's Paul Bond reports that even Democrats said MSNBC is "out of control" in its liberal leanings:

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

Yeah, the article is good. I love Kieth, Rachel and that spitting-on-the-table guy but the real story would be when MSNBC beat FOX.

I think O' Reilly's ratings are hurt by Kieth's countdown. Hannity is still feeding his audience with bogus/futile topics and still considered top in the 9.00 PM slot.

From the story...

"Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it."

No matter how hard PMSNBC tries to promulgate their hatred for the Republicans, they just can't seem to do better than Fox.

Doesn't this alone tell you that more people would rather watch Fox?

It's certainly a sad statement about the collective gullibility of our nation. Every time I meet someone singing Palin's praises I say, "Oh, you watch Fox." And they always look at me surprised, like I'm psychic or something. lol I want to say "The only people in the country who support that woman are people who watch Fox regularly, NO ONE else does. No one."

Though your analysis of these people is true, some of them still grow to reject this poison. Not as quickly as anyone would like it to be, but miracles DO happen.

MSNBC is great. I love Keith and Chris and Rachel. I try to watch CNN sometimes, but hubby and I agree that they need to learn to cut people off. From my perspective, CNN is right-leaning. They either let the right rant a lot or are too easy on them (which really also means they get to rant a lot). I mean, come on, Larry, Campbell, etc.

Typical closed minded liberal.

Here is what you're saying...

I will only watch people I agree with. I am right and everyone that disagree's with me is wrong.

Are you sure you're not Joy Bahar? You're using all caps which means you're shouting the way she always does on "A View."

Then you use your final statement to bash Sarah Palin. Just haaaaad to let that anger shine through, didn't you? McCain and Palin have already said publicly that Ted Stevens should resign. Remember, she already took care of all the Rebublican good old boys at the state level.

CNN is going to be so sorry they turned tail. MSNBC will go through the roof, they will have so much to talk about for so long. I'm looking forward to it.

And Linda, I'd have lunch with Keith Olbermann anyday. I'd even cook it and bring it to him. I'd make it for Chris too and Rachel could sit at the head of the table. What a blast that would be.

Nobody expect the neo cons to like the change in attitude in America. They have had their turn. We are at the gates of Hell now, thanks to this administration.

The modern Conservative is not like previous generations. Today's Conservative is far more gullible, dishonest, hateful to the point of violence (as opposed to their claims that Liberals are somehow, magically the violent ones). Ruthless and cruel. As far from a true Christian as the Sun is from the Moon. Led by local handlers like attack dogs, all the time believing that they are being "Being good".

"Good boy. Go git 'em boy. Att'a boy..."

CNN's Jon Klein has it backwards. He says that after the election, viewers will leave partisan MSNBC and return to CNN. Wrong. CNN is partisan for McCain/Palin but they're just a little more subtle than
FOX. If Obama wins and becomes a very popular president, viewers won't forget that CNN did everything it could to defeat him. Everytime I turn on CNN, it's McCain/Palin constantly with hardly any mention of Joe Biden. After Obama wins the election, MSNBC's ratings will climb and CNN's will diminish.

CNN - the second most untrusted name in news!

CNN and the other media are leaning too much toward McCaIn. They let him and his spokespeople lie without challenging them and they cut off the Democrat's spokespeople and don't give them rebuttal time.

Hmmm..... guess who is getting huge tax cuts under McCain's plan? BIG CORPORATIONS!

I'm glad to see that other people realize how CNN operates against the Obama campaign, despite McCain's claims that the whole world is "in the tank" for Barack. To tell the truth, MSNBC isn't any better (and Morning Joe is nearly unbearable), except for Keith and Rachel (and occasionally Matthews, when his beatdowns just happen to work to Obama's advantage).

No offense to Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, but that's just wackadoodle. Lunch with Sean Hannity over Keith? Uh, okay. That's plain nutty. Me thinks Linda was being a bit of a suck up to her colleagues.

If MSNBC becomes a staple on basic cable, its ratings will jump. Right now it's mostly available in premium cable packages, while Fox is part of most basic cable. That might explain why so many older campers watch FNC far more than either CNN or MSNBC.

I watch MSNBC whenever possible but I do watch the Situation Room at 4 p.m. only because they repeat Hardball again at 6. I don't understand how FOX does so well. It is so far to the right and so vicious I can't watch it without risking a rise in my blood pressure. I also listen to Tom Hartman whenever I can. He is a very intelligent guy and I've learned a lot about government and it's history. He is able to intelligently rebutt anything McCain says. My favorite topic though is the one where he says America's basic problem is that we don't make anything here any more and when I think about it he's right. He'd be a great addition to MSNBC. They picked up Rachel Maddow so I can only hope.

I live in Illinois and we aren't a swing state obviously but I voted last Wednesday for Obama so now I can sit back and hope that the polls are right.

Hannity is NOT the news, O'Reilly is not news. I will admit that FOX certainly has a conservative lean, but if it's OK for MSNBC to have a liberal lean why get so worked up about FOX? For the record this country has millions of people in it who are conservatives and want a more conservative viewpoint. Does that make them wrong? According to liberals the answer is yes, but what makes your thought process any more valid because you think you are correct in your political ideals. You can't watch FOX without getting your blood pressure up and I can't watch Rachel or Keith without wanting to throw things at the TV. That is why America is a great country because we have diverse people with diverse ideas. I will agree to disagree with you but I won't hate you. I will disagree with Obama but if/when he becomes my president I will respect him in that office. No, I'm not wanting your approval nor will I get it out here on huffposts, but thats OK because it it was it is.
