Msnbc Primetime

MSNBC beat CNN in prime time for the month of October, led by the breakout success of "The Rachel Maddow Show," which brought MSNBC its first-ever victory over CNN in the 9PM hour.

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul J. Gough reports:

MSNBC has throttled into second place in three hours of cable news primetime, beating CNN for the month of October.

Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it. But MSNBC turned in its best primetime performance in its 12-year history in the adults 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. It surpassed CNN for second place between 7-10 p.m. with "Hardball," "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show."

MSNBC GM Phil Griffin said Monday that it's a historic placement for the network and part of MSNBC's long-term strategy when it set out on this course two years ago.

"We wanted to challenge CNN and become a player by the election," Griffin said. "Guess what? In the months leading into the election, we beat CNN."

Griffin also spoke to TVNewser, saying:

"We've never had a performance like this in our history. We tamed the giant of Larry King."

The Numbers
7PM
"Hardball": 458,000 (A25-54)
"Lou Dobbs Tonight": 428,000 (A25-54)

8PM
"Countdown with Keith Olbermann": 784,000 (A25-54)
"Campbell Brown": 582,000 (A25-54)

9PM
"The Rachel Maddow Show": 700,000 (A25-54)
"Larry King Live": 673,000 (A25-54)

Of course, with MSNBC's growing success comes a target on its back, and CNN President Jon Klein said in a statement that he expects CNN's nonpartisan programming to win out once the passions of the election season have subsided:

CNN is beating MSNBC in primetime, we are No. 1 in all cable news at 10 p.m., and it is no surprise that their partisan approach will see a bump a month before the election. We think our objective, post-partisan approach will have better long-term results.

Such a sentiment was echoed by TV executives on both sides of the political aisle at a media luncheon. The Hollywood Reporter's Paul Bond reports that even Democrats said MSNBC is "out of control" in its liberal leanings:

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

I never miss MSNBC 7PM-10PM. Keith & Rachel are superstars. Keith tells it like it is as does Rachel. Their wit & intellect is absolutely amazing. David, can really move off the island. Have tried & tried, but can't take him.

That fact the MSNBC is topping CNN and O'Reilly in the ratings bodes well for Barack Obama.

Supporters of Obama are overwhelmingly watching programming that is supportive of their candidate.

The ratings of MSNBC may in turn reinforce Obama's leads in polls in Blue States and Toss-Ups in play.

Do your homework, MSNBC isn't even in the same zip code as O'Reilly.

Then you missed Keith tooting his horn that he has beaten O'Reilly 6 out of the last 10 days. In fact, O'Reilly has accused Nielson of supporting Obama and massaging his numbers downward.

One more thing, congrats to MSNBC, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow. My favorites and the only reason I look at MSNBC. DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING. We are the viewers and fans not Linda Bloodsworth-Thomason.

Keith Olbermann is too classy to want to go out with the likes of Linda Bloodsworth-Thomason. She's worried about how MSNBC is treating Sarah Plain. What about the way she treated Delta Burke and Jackee when they were on her show? Didn't she have it in for plus sized women? What a phoney!

It is encouraging that MSNBC is breaking out off the media control of the corporate Conservatives of CNN and the Murdoch Fox-Wall Street Journel monopoly. These corporate monopolies continue to try to brainwash the American people that a liberal view is unhealthy.

Perhaps if they thought it out better, their attempts ot censure only makes these views more attractive. What you forbid becomes an obbessed desire to have.

Why can't we incorparate all views and truly be the MELTING POT we claim we are. Americans are threatened with the dull psyche that you see Singapore.

I agree, there is an attempt by CNN and Fox to distort information and be very misleading!

I find it fascinating that CNN purports itself to be non-partisan. In 2004 I almost threw something at a hotel TV during the Democratic convention. Was not much better in 2008. Every time I try to watch CNN it is so biased towards Republicans I can barely listen to it. MSNBC, although they have Scarborough, Buchanan, Andrea Mitchell, David Gregory, etc., with Keith and Rachel back to back it is a pleasure to listen to the TV (actually watch on the net). I am thrilled that MSNBC is reaping the rating rewards for their gutsy support of both Keith and Rachel. Thanks!

Or there could be an attempt by MSNBC to distort information and be very misleading, just depends on what your view of the world is.

Tonight, Rachel's football analogy for the presidential campaign was nothing short of brilliant. Even Gov. Rendell was impressed I think. Superb interview with Madeline Albright. What a pleasure to watch. And now her own interview with Barack on Thursday!! I want to see those ratings.

To think, only a few months ago, the only way to hear Rachel in Boston was by streaming the Air America feed.

Now if MSNBC can add Thom Hartman and Stephanie Miller, my life will be complete. After a Barack victory, of course...

Rachel is terrific and a rising star. She may be the heir apparent to Tim Russert on MTP. She's smart and quick on her feet as demonstrated by her improptu off script exchange with David Frum.

I can't think of anyone at NBC or anywhere else that is as sharp and as well prepared as Rachel Maddow.

I think America overall, feels the great loss of Tim Russert this election year - well respected and trusted by both Democrats and Republicans.

I think tonight's show may have been Rachel's finest show so far. Yes, that campaign football analogy was terrific, particularly given the fact that I am a baseball gal and yet even I understood the strategy! I also enjoyed the interview with Madeline Albright. What a powerful endorsement for Sen. Obama.

Don't be so sure. I know the love affair with Keith, Rachel and Chris is currently a beautiful thing but after awhile people don't like to listen to one side of every story all the time. Your complaints about FOX should apply to you and your lovefest with MSNBC. What makes it OK for MSNBC and not FOX?

Your ability to identify when you are being lied to is broken.

That is why it is not possible to explain to you that the reason so many people are abandoning fox News is because they are liars.
