Msnbc Primetime

MSNBC beat CNN in prime time for the month of October, led by the breakout success of "The Rachel Maddow Show," which brought MSNBC its first-ever victory over CNN in the 9PM hour.

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul J. Gough reports:

MSNBC has throttled into second place in three hours of cable news primetime, beating CNN for the month of October.

Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it. But MSNBC turned in its best primetime performance in its 12-year history in the adults 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. It surpassed CNN for second place between 7-10 p.m. with "Hardball," "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show."

MSNBC GM Phil Griffin said Monday that it's a historic placement for the network and part of MSNBC's long-term strategy when it set out on this course two years ago.

"We wanted to challenge CNN and become a player by the election," Griffin said. "Guess what? In the months leading into the election, we beat CNN."

Griffin also spoke to TVNewser, saying:

"We've never had a performance like this in our history. We tamed the giant of Larry King."

The Numbers
7PM
"Hardball": 458,000 (A25-54)
"Lou Dobbs Tonight": 428,000 (A25-54)

8PM
"Countdown with Keith Olbermann": 784,000 (A25-54)
"Campbell Brown": 582,000 (A25-54)

Story continues below

9PM
"The Rachel Maddow Show": 700,000 (A25-54)
"Larry King Live": 673,000 (A25-54)

Of course, with MSNBC's growing success comes a target on its back, and CNN President Jon Klein said in a statement that he expects CNN's nonpartisan programming to win out once the passions of the election season have subsided:

CNN is beating MSNBC in primetime, we are No. 1 in all cable news at 10 p.m., and it is no surprise that their partisan approach will see a bump a month before the election. We think our objective, post-partisan approach will have better long-term results.

Such a sentiment was echoed by TV executives on both sides of the political aisle at a media luncheon. The Hollywood Reporter's Paul Bond reports that even Democrats said MSNBC is "out of control" in its liberal leanings:

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

Thanks to all of you for bringing MSNBC into my life I dont know how I ever watched CNN. I dont even bother flicking their anymore unless Roland Martin is on. I seriously dont know how I ever got along without Keith Olbermann. Honestly I dont see why ppl are so upset with Keith, they must not be watching because he truly does a wonderful job reporting the stories other news organizations leave out. I really enjoyed Rachels football analogy tonight very cute.

You don't have to waste your time for Roland Martin on CNN. You can catch him on the Tom Joyner Show on the radio. See, now you don't have to watch CNN at all.

Maddow is simply good at what she does, so now there's some actual competition and by golly it looks like she's winning.

One of the coolest thing about Rachel Maddow is that no matter how spirited the disagreement may get between her and a guest, she is unfailingly civil and she lets them talk.

The folks on Fox are shrill, rude and abusive in their interrupting and shouting down and I care not to watch that sort of thing. Why have a person on your show if you don't want them to talk?

Not nearly as pathetic as Sean Hannity. Sean says the same thing every single night. Sean and his slimey friend DIck Morris and hero Karl Rove are the ugliest trio on TV!

I no longer watch CNN, they lost me because of their bias reported during primaries. If CNN represent its self as unbiased they have done horrible job. Gergen who presented himself as unbiased was full of bias for Hillary and McCain. The final nail in the coffin was their coverage of the Democrat convention.

> Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

Ummm.... Might the authors not have inquired into Thomason's background, a bit further, and pondered whether she was harboring any resentment not so much over the treatment of Sarah Palin but of Hillary Clinton?

It is laughable for any thinking person to think that Palin has been mistreated by the media in any way. Rather, it is politically negligent of the McCain campaign to be protecting Palin from media scrutiny and professionally negligent of the news media to not be criticizing the lack of access to Palin. Palin is a supremely unqualified candidate for the White House, and it is ridiculous that she is being given a relative pass.

Yeah, I had to chuckle at that irony, as well. Fox News doesn't seem to be doing so badly with their wildly partisan approach, 24/7. So, if anything, maybe MSNBC needs to go further, rather than just having the 2 left-of-center shows. (I wouldn't call 'Hardball' left-of-center, by any stretch.)

Let's see her journalistic integrity...let's see how many ACTUAL questions she asks BO..and I don't mean something like "Do you wer boxers or briefs" I mean ask him why he says he's giving a tax break to 95% of Americans when 40% of the 95% he's talking about don't pay a penny in taxes...why is he misleading the American people by saying this,or is he actually going to give a tax break (I guess this means our money) to the 40% who pay no taxes.

Let's see how he answers this question

How cone you aren't seeing John McCain on Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow, but Obama had the cajones to do the Factor with Bill O Reilly?

Batting for naught peggyleg, just like the McCain't campaign.

Are you talking about all those corporations and wealthy "taxpayers" who don't actually pay any income taxes?

Do you realize that anyone who is so poorly paid they do not pay taxes is going to get a tax break from O all the way up to $250k as they work their way out of poverty? Someone at that income level needs every bit of help they can get, and believe me, they will spend every penny of it and that's what will stimulate the economy.

If 40% are really not paying taxes, that says something extremely damning about the world the neocons have left us. It's a fact that millions have fallen into poverty under Bush and millions have lot health insurance also.

I just posted the following comment in response to someone championing MSNBC and saying CNN is no longer neutral:

"I feel the same way. I now have to go back and forth with MSNBC to keep it "fair and balanced." Besides, Maddow rocks on so many levels and Olbermann is a great counterweight to all the right wing radio and Faux News out there. BTW, who made Linda Bloodworth-Thomason the spokeswoman for anything? I personally think she's more likely to be having breatfast with Larry King at Nate'n Al than Hannity, but, Christ, who cares?"

It posted and then was almost immediately deleted. Whose Corn Flakes did I p*ss on with this?
