Msnbc Primetime

MSNBC beat CNN in prime time for the month of October, led by the breakout success of "The Rachel Maddow Show," which brought MSNBC its first-ever victory over CNN in the 9PM hour.

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul J. Gough reports:

MSNBC has throttled into second place in three hours of cable news primetime, beating CNN for the month of October.

Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it. But MSNBC turned in its best primetime performance in its 12-year history in the adults 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. It surpassed CNN for second place between 7-10 p.m. with "Hardball," "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show."

MSNBC GM Phil Griffin said Monday that it's a historic placement for the network and part of MSNBC's long-term strategy when it set out on this course two years ago.

"We wanted to challenge CNN and become a player by the election," Griffin said. "Guess what? In the months leading into the election, we beat CNN."

Griffin also spoke to TVNewser, saying:

"We've never had a performance like this in our history. We tamed the giant of Larry King."

The Numbers
7PM
"Hardball": 458,000 (A25-54)
"Lou Dobbs Tonight": 428,000 (A25-54)

8PM
"Countdown with Keith Olbermann": 784,000 (A25-54)
"Campbell Brown": 582,000 (A25-54)

Story continues below

9PM
"The Rachel Maddow Show": 700,000 (A25-54)
"Larry King Live": 673,000 (A25-54)

Of course, with MSNBC's growing success comes a target on its back, and CNN President Jon Klein said in a statement that he expects CNN's nonpartisan programming to win out once the passions of the election season have subsided:

CNN is beating MSNBC in primetime, we are No. 1 in all cable news at 10 p.m., and it is no surprise that their partisan approach will see a bump a month before the election. We think our objective, post-partisan approach will have better long-term results.

Such a sentiment was echoed by TV executives on both sides of the political aisle at a media luncheon. The Hollywood Reporter's Paul Bond reports that even Democrats said MSNBC is "out of control" in its liberal leanings:

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

So glad to see Chris Matthews whipping Lou Dobbs! Dobbs is just dreadful. Chris provided a great assist in revealing Michelle Bachmann as the nut she's always been!!! As a Minnesotan, he'll always hold a special place in my heart for that!!! Matthews should get a key to the city or something.

I love Keith and Rachel too!!

I've enjoyed Rachel's show on Air America for a couple of years. When I first saw her on Keith's show going up against Pat Buchanan and slam dunking him almost every time I thought, wow...I want more of this woman.
Her show is a real treat for liberals who have been left out in the cold for over a decade in terms of radio or television political programming. As much as the right cries (whine might be a better word) foul at every chance it gets when the slightest criticism is leveled against a republican, they will leave no meat left on the carcass when it comes to their critiques of Democrats. Rachel's grasp of the issues and her unique abilities to analyze and put her views in logical perspective is terrific. A real talent.
She showed her brilliance when she appeared on Leno.

Amazing that advertisers would throw money at radio station that would happily lie about Trickle down economics and help ensure that their big businesses would pay even less taxes than they do already.

I used to like to watch CNN for being quite nuetral. But NOT ANYMORE. They have too many negative coverage on Obama repeatedly and hardly on the McCain side. Too many stupid reporters seem to be fall in love with Palin, especially Lou Dobbs, Anderson Cooper, Dave Griffin, perhaps Wolf as well. Lou Dobbs always claims himself to be an Idependent but he is hypocritically wrong. My choice now is MSNBC.

Maybe it is because CNN started stating FACTS, and started doing this (stating facts) after witnessing the sucess of FOX news...

CNN will regain their place above MSNBC once people start realizing that they are NO LONGER in the tank for BO...and MSNBC will be dead last once again..hahaha

Anderson Cooper has been a huge disappointment for me. I used to think he was fair, but he is clearly conservative leaning. Lou Dobbs hates China.

I feel the same way. I now have to go back and forth with MSNBC to keep it "fair and balanced." Besides, Maddow rocks on so many levels and Olbermann is a great counterweight to all the right wing radio and Faux News out there.

BTW, who made Linda Bloodworth-Thomason the spokeswoman for anything? I personally think she's more likely to be having breatfast with Larry King at Nate'n Al than Hannity, but, Christ, who cares?

I think people are just tired of hearing one side of everything. I think MSNBC could be a little more balanced but they seem to be the only one's that reports a different side to the news. I use to like Lou Dobbs but now I can't look at him for five minutes. He really believes he is an Independent and not realizing he is still a Republican.

After the MSM being "asleep at the wheel" all this time, regarding Bushco, we "all" (like it or not) owe a debt of gratitude to Anderson Cooper at CNN (his live uncensored Katrina broadcasts) for opening the door in exposing Bushco for what it is -- incompetent. And subsequently, KO, for his breakthrough (& long overdue) bashing of the whole right-wing machine. A big "thankyou" to both of them.

stating facts??? cnn??? msnbc -- david gregory is so not for obama. ko is, rachel too. chris matthews kinda goes back and forth. i guess when he remembers the "old mccain" he becomes a fan but then when faced with rethugs like bachmann he changes his mind :)

cnn though is in the tank for mccain. they just can't spin lies (like fox) and call it news. but what they do is as bad -- they actually omit bad stories about mccain.

MSNBC is number 1 because it has the brightest, smartest and courageous reporters in the land.

CNN used to be the best but they got rid of most of the best talent they had.

Wolf Blitzer is pathetic constantly chanting "the best team in the business" and Larry King is too old.Iguess they have to toot their own horn, cause no one else does.

GO Keith, Rachel, Chuck Todd- YOU ARE THE BEST TEAM!

Does anyone know how many more cable providers MSNBC is on compared to FOX News? I mean ones that carry MSNBC on their Basic or Expanded Basic Plans? Methinks the numbers for FOX are higher due to being carried by more cable providers. Also, FOX is bound to lose it's appeal eventually. I remember when I was growing up that CBS was the number one network for years due to their nightly news was poplular and way back when there were no tv remotes on every tv. Older people just left their channel on CBS all evening. Once a new generation came in CBS only appealed to the segment of the market that didn't have buying power, thus in the 90's the networks started keeping track of the "ideal" audience who would spend more money.

FOX will lose control of it's stronghold as MSNBC gets on more basic cable line ups and also as more and more young viewers and even baby boomers (like me) switch to MSNBC. Keith and Rachel already are pulling in the ideal demographics, an area FOX and CNN are losing viewers in.

Also, Glen Beck has left CNN and gone to FOX. Good riddense! He made me really lose what little respect I had for CNN.

Lastly, I have been watching Keith before Keith was cool, and he has gotten a bit of a big head, but he's still provocative and truthfull and makes me laugh.

I had to call my cable company for a special box in order to get MSNBC. It was then that I realized that FOX and CNN are on all the basic plans but not MSNBC...why? I don't know but that is the only reason that FOX comes out on top. Not everyone has MSNBC.
I used to enjoy CNN but they are becoming almost as biased as FOX.
