Msnbc Primetime

MSNBC beat CNN in prime time for the month of October, led by the breakout success of "The Rachel Maddow Show," which brought MSNBC its first-ever victory over CNN in the 9PM hour.

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul J. Gough reports:

MSNBC has throttled into second place in three hours of cable news primetime, beating CNN for the month of October.

Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it. But MSNBC turned in its best primetime performance in its 12-year history in the adults 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. It surpassed CNN for second place between 7-10 p.m. with "Hardball," "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show."

MSNBC GM Phil Griffin said Monday that it's a historic placement for the network and part of MSNBC's long-term strategy when it set out on this course two years ago.

"We wanted to challenge CNN and become a player by the election," Griffin said. "Guess what? In the months leading into the election, we beat CNN."

Griffin also spoke to TVNewser, saying:

"We've never had a performance like this in our history. We tamed the giant of Larry King."

The Numbers
7PM
"Hardball": 458,000 (A25-54)
"Lou Dobbs Tonight": 428,000 (A25-54)

8PM
"Countdown with Keith Olbermann": 784,000 (A25-54)
"Campbell Brown": 582,000 (A25-54)

9PM
"The Rachel Maddow Show": 700,000 (A25-54)
"Larry King Live": 673,000 (A25-54)

Of course, with MSNBC's growing success comes a target on its back, and CNN President Jon Klein said in a statement that he expects CNN's nonpartisan programming to win out once the passions of the election season have subsided:

CNN is beating MSNBC in primetime, we are No. 1 in all cable news at 10 p.m., and it is no surprise that their partisan approach will see a bump a month before the election. We think our objective, post-partisan approach will have better long-term results.

Such a sentiment was echoed by TV executives on both sides of the political aisle at a media luncheon. The Hollywood Reporter's Paul Bond reports that even Democrats said MSNBC is "out of control" in its liberal leanings:

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

I'll have that lunch with Keith anyday. As for Hannity I wouldn't mind if a whale shark eats him for lunch.

Linda Bloodsworth-Thomson is one of those bitter Hillary fans, hence her animus against MSNBC despite the lack of any other evidence otherwise. Scarborough certainly isn't Liberal. David Gregory wasn't. Dan Abrahms wasn't. And where is her hand-wringing about Faux "News," which is very obviously a branch of the GOP? PUMA Bloodworth-Thomason is not surprisingly silent. Just like how Hillary was praising Fixed News after the primaries, depite the years they savaged her. I like Hillary again, but this sucking up to Faux News by the likes of Hillary and her supporters, is disappointing, to say the least.

You are so right. I can't understand how Hillary could stoop to do Fox News after the way they treated her and Bill then claim to be moral. BTW, did they ever find out that French's mustard was made here in America during their boycott of France? Not to mention, did they ever want to go after the Statue of Liberty and give it back to France? Just looking for an update.

Fox news gets the best ratings and they're right wing propagandists. I don't know how two shows hosted by openly liberal people will hurt MSNBC long term. It doesn't seem to be hurting Fox

Makes sense - with all the stress and hypersensitivity, it's easier listening to one's own point of view - eases tensions and reinforces.

CONGRATS!

CNN is winning at 10pm? Big deal! MSNBC is airing re-runs by then (although I do feel they should have live programming until 11pm).

Who cares if some of these people don't like Olbermann -- he gets ratings. He's the liberal, truth-telling version of O'Reilly and that kind of thing isn't for everyone. Tough beans.

And how hard is it to watch the Larry King show these days? The 2 vs. 2 political panelist format is the most unproductive, uncomfortable thing to watch on cable news. The Larry King Show is visual Chinese water torture at this point.

Has MSNBC turned into a liberal haven? Yeah. It's become the anti-FOX, but there are differences. Despite their left-leanings, they don't treat the opposition guests disrespectfully as FOX hosts do (see FOX host vs. Bill Burton). Plus, they do have 3-hours of conservative programming in the morning. FOX has zero minutes of liberal programming. MSNBC also doesn't air hit-job, one-sided weekend specials that attempt to bring down presidential candidates either (i.e. Sean Hannity hates Obama specials). So, yes, MSNBC leans left, but they still aren't as over-the-top bias as FOX.

I agree and Kieth will actually apologize when he gets something wrong - Billo would rather die before admiting he's wrong because he's a D(*&he Bag.

Linda said it all! Sean Insannity let's be clear is NOT a fanatical raving lunatic Obamaniac! Nor is anyone else on humble FAUX tabloid. But Keith is demeaning and MSNBC leans liberal! I swear hypocrisy is just all over the place and it is flagrant and stunning. There are so many people that I won't give creedence to in regards to opinions ever. What a crock of crap! And I am so HAPPY that MSNBC came in 2nd. Shame it doesn't come in first. Shows there are a lot of hateful folks IMHO in the world who like their information spewed, regurgitated, rehashed at them! That channel with the evil talking heads is one of the most HATEFUL venues I have ever seen!

MSNBC is great, except for David Gregory, who is soft on Republicans and hard on Democrats. He asks tough questions to Democrats, then goes limp when a Nicole Wallace comes on. His show, as a result, is tepid because he allows Republicans to spin their way out of the current problems that THEY created. He is the weak link.
