Msnbc Primetime

MSNBC beat CNN in prime time for the month of October, led by the breakout success of "The Rachel Maddow Show," which brought MSNBC its first-ever victory over CNN in the 9PM hour.

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul J. Gough reports:

MSNBC has throttled into second place in three hours of cable news primetime, beating CNN for the month of October.

Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it. But MSNBC turned in its best primetime performance in its 12-year history in the adults 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. It surpassed CNN for second place between 7-10 p.m. with "Hardball," "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show."

MSNBC GM Phil Griffin said Monday that it's a historic placement for the network and part of MSNBC's long-term strategy when it set out on this course two years ago.

"We wanted to challenge CNN and become a player by the election," Griffin said. "Guess what? In the months leading into the election, we beat CNN."

Griffin also spoke to TVNewser, saying:

"We've never had a performance like this in our history. We tamed the giant of Larry King."

The Numbers
7PM
"Hardball": 458,000 (A25-54)
"Lou Dobbs Tonight": 428,000 (A25-54)

8PM
"Countdown with Keith Olbermann": 784,000 (A25-54)
"Campbell Brown": 582,000 (A25-54)

9PM
"The Rachel Maddow Show": 700,000 (A25-54)
"Larry King Live": 673,000 (A25-54)

Of course, with MSNBC's growing success comes a target on its back, and CNN President Jon Klein said in a statement that he expects CNN's nonpartisan programming to win out once the passions of the election season have subsided:

CNN is beating MSNBC in primetime, we are No. 1 in all cable news at 10 p.m., and it is no surprise that their partisan approach will see a bump a month before the election. We think our objective, post-partisan approach will have better long-term results.

Such a sentiment was echoed by TV executives on both sides of the political aisle at a media luncheon. The Hollywood Reporter's Paul Bond reports that even Democrats said MSNBC is "out of control" in its liberal leanings:

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

Really happy for Maddow. Came out of nowhere, had a lot of doubters and has now proved them all wrong.

Bloddworth-Thomasen must be forgetting the reference to Michelle Obama as "Obama's Baby Mama". You would literally have to insert voice-overs into clips of republicans to come close to Faux News' antics. Please, woman, stop claiming to be a liberal-democrat to get face-time leverage. And another thing, when are they going to stop using the term "liberal" like it was a dirty word.

I'm thrilled that MSNBC is finally achieving the success it deserves. It's great to see intelligent people with the balls (sorry Rachel) to confront the other side. I watch every night. Now if they would just jetison Joe and Mica in the morning I'd be a happy man.

I used to love Air America radio when I lived in a city that broadcast it. I miss it; but now I rely on MSNBC to present a point of view I can agree with. Long live Matthews-Olbermann-Maddow!

This just gives me more the reason to continue watching MSNBC because I can really enjoy intellectual humor while reporting news in a clear and concise way. FOX is extreme right, that promotes divisiveness and MSNBC sticks it to the GOP with a smile. I love it...........

i don't know why larry king even bothers showing up.

you can just set a pair of suspenders on the desk and let the guest talk for an hour.

the only difference: the interviewee won't get interupted every 10 seconds with a series of grunts and groans.

I've always wondered what the whole Larry King (top of the list) thing was all about. I see the same thing as you, regarding the 'old guy'. He's especially odd when it comes to responding accordingly to any "humor" his guest offer --- seems out-to-lunch.

Me 2. It doesn't matter who the guest is. I haven't been able to sit thru his show for years. I just don't know what the attraction is.

I think if Obama/Biden wins, Faux News will sink very, very quickly. I am positive that an Obama administration will snub that joke and CNN and MSNBC will soar. First to get the coverage and the stories, they will drown out the fake network and we will all have the last laugh, which is always the best laugh!

While it would certainly make my day, I sincerely doubt that will ever happen. They're like rats, cockroaches and any other vermin that comes to mind! Look at Limbaugh! How long has he been around and he's even more popular and and right leaning than ever.

My pseudo-hippie Obama voting mother used to listen to him quite a lot, much to my dismay. The dismay is about the Limbaugh listening, not the pseudo-hippie or Obama voting.

I never could understand how she could listen to the rantings of that horse's behind!

Is it a bad thing to support good over bad....isn't about time that someone pointed out that you don't have to give equal time to idiots......when the "Emperor" is wandering around naked are we amiss to point out his nakedness. Who says that we have to give equal time to discredited points of view?
we need leadership. we need people to speak out against ingnorance and superstition and hold people to a higher standard. we need to demand rationality not emotionality in public and private discourse. WE need to call out people for faulty thinking and gullibility. we need to demand honesty and accuracy in communication...and that can start in oor own homes. we need to make people accountable both for there actions and for their beliefs. we need to stop handing out "free passes" to
the morally and ethically corrupt that allows them to poison the well from which we all must drink.

I enjoy the time Rachel gives to her segments. A discussion gets to actually be a discussion and she doesnt interupt her guests. The thing that drives me crazy about Larry King is this hollywood squares pundit roundup where very little gets said and he's constantly interupting the dialogue flow with a 30-60sec commercial. I watch Rachel for the substantive discussions and flip to Larry during Rachel's commercial breaks. Sandwiching her between a double dose of KO gives me all the progressive news I could want with seconds and then desert at 9 with Hardball. They have the progressive audience LOCKED in PST from 6-10PM.

With all due respect to CNN, critics said the same thing about FoxNews a few years back. It was just a blip on the radar with a partisan slant that would soon wear thin with viewers. Guess what? Critics (and CNN) were wrong. CNN has a long track record of underestimating the competition. Personally, I am thrilled that there is a left-leaning alternative to FoxNews in prime time. I switched from CNN a few months ago and now watch the three hour block of Matthews, Olbermann and Maddow every night on MSNBC. I have turned a bunch of my friends and family members onto the network as well. I don't plan on returning to CNN after the election. MSNBC must be doing something right because Bill O'Reilly is in a lather, going so far as to accuse Nielsen of fixing the ratings so that they favor MSNBC (I kid you not). He's calling for a Federal investigation of the ratings service. BTW, regarding the forum that is referenced here. Perhaps washed up, has-been producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason should come clean about the real reason she hates MSNBC and Keith Olbermann: he supported Barack Obama openly in the primaries and was critical of Hillary Clinton. Let us not forget that Bloodworth-Thomason has two claims to fame: the series "Designing Women" and her longtime personal friendship with Bill and Hillary Clinton. Her comments about MSNBC are as much of a joke as her career.

I wish that Jack Cafferty would go to MSNBC, then I wouldn't have to watch CNN at all!
I could just scream at Campbell Brown, Rick Sanchez and Drew Griffin. CNN is wearing out its welcome, and MSNBC will have dominance over after the election.

I don't care what anyone says. The GOP haven't stopped their sleazy attacks on anyone from left to center. To say otherwise shows they are trying to spin that fact like everything else. Everything they accuse the democrats of, is exactly what they are doing everyday. Are they aware they are projecting or is it intentional? As they continue to get caught red-handed, I sometimes wonder.

My opinion...MSNBC better than CNN....WAY BETTER THAN FAKE-NEWS FOX! What Barney Franks said to O'Really, pertains to all of them....Their stupidity gets in the way of having a conversation with any of them. Not only that... They continually interrupt people and scream over their voices. They're afraid the truth will come out. By the way...has anyone caught Little Bill? Too funny.

Way to Go Chris, Keith, Rachel! CHAMPIONS IN THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE AND DEMOCRACY!
P.S. MSNBC didn't demonize Palin. I think the demons were there long before she was selected VP ... that's why the Kenyan pastor was praying over her... it didn't work!

Rachel Maddow brings to cable news something that really hasn't been a sought-after commodity in broadcast media for a long time: a sense of humor (sometimes a gently self-deprecating one) and a wonderful ability to achieve perspective and balance. I love her segments with Pat Buchanan where you can juxtapose Rachel's measured tones against the rising pitch of Pat's voice. But I 'm curious as to whether they've got Pat hooked up to a blood pressure monitor because sometimes Rachel seems to cut the dialogues short and I was wondering if there is any concern that Pat might actually explode some day. If he does, I assume everything will go to the right.

Keith is great as the Anti-Bill O'Hannity and his commentaries are getting stronger and more on point all the time.

For many months, I kept begging MSNBC to be the alternative to Fox/Fake News, meaning left leaning, as opposed to right, right, and right leaning. I am thrilled with the line-up and never switch to any other station. Thanks MSNBC!
