Politico:

Obama's up with a new ad, airing at least in the Northern Virginia market, responding to the GOP attack on Joe Biden's suggestion that hostile nations would test the new, young president and generate a crisis.

"An economic meltdown. Two wars. And John McCain's playing with audiotapes, selectively editing Joe Biden's words," says the narrator. "The next president will be tested. But here's what Biden actually said about Barack Obama:"

The Biden clip of choice: "'They're going to find this guy's got steel in his spine."

Senator Obama's reaction, personally and through his campaign, to Senator Biden's remarks at a gathering of a select group of Obama donors and supporters demonstrates the biggest lapse in Barack Obama's judgement - rare though such lapses are - of this entire election cycle.

Barack Obama, and his campaign, have apparently bought into the extreme incompetence and ineptitude of the media and blogosphere and failed to understand that Biden is, next to Michelle herself, Obama's biggest supporter and defender and one of the precious few who will be loyal AND have the expertise to always have Barack's back - through thick and thin, good times and bad (especially the bad)...NO MATTER WHAT!

Senator Biden deserved better from Barack Obama and his campaign.

LizM, you said what I wanted to say, thank you.
Joe Biden is a treasure, and always has Obama's back and the back of America. He is the real deal, has done tremendous things for this country throughout his career, and deserves respect.

McCain and his surrogates and media scrape through every Biden comment, hoping for something juicy to parse and use against the campaign. Sad but true. But Obama's response to this, when everyone including both campaign's are aware that Joe fully supports Obama's presidency without hesitation, broke my heart. It was a sad day.

Yes, Senator Joe Biden deserved much better.

Jack Kennedy was tested by the Cuban missis crisis and avoided blowing up the world with nuclear weapons just because some crazy general wanted him to.

John McCain claims he was tested because he sat in the cockpit of a plane on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise off of Cuba waiting for the real commander-in-chief to make a decision on using nuclear weapons.

Ronald Reagan was tested by the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon which killed 241 American marines. Reagan ordered the withdrawal of all United States peacekeeping forces from Lebanon.

Bill Clinton was tested and the people who bombed the WTC are in jail.

George W. Bush was tested (and btw ignored warnings of attacks because they came from the Clinton administration) and the people who bombed the WTC are living in Pakistan or maybe even at the Crawford ranch waiting to be brought out of hiding before the election.

John McCain claims that he won't be tested because he SAT in the cockpit of a plane on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise off of Cuba waiting for the real commander-in-chief to make a decision on using nuclear weapons.

Any person selected as president will be tested, it does not matter who that person is.

It is a good ad...not a great one...By the way..Why is the Obama Campaign averse to using McCain's own words and voice to condemn his actions of late..

What about an ad using his words approving taxing people with higher incomes?

Why is the Obama Campaign in cruise control?

Steel in his spine, ice in his veins under fire vs. Weak-kneed, lilly-livered, spineless McCain with hot lava exploding out of his head. And that is just before breakfast!!

In a choice between tough and smart, I would choose smart. Smart people know how to defuse situations and avoid the need for confrontations. Obama is the rare candidate who offers both tough and smart.

That's exactly right. Seems to me the only test McCain ever passed way surviving as a POW -- which is great and all, but (1) his lack of skill as a pilot is widely regarded as what got him shot down in the first place and (2) his volunteering to his captors that he was the son of a Navy Admiral got him preferential treatment and his fellow POWs widely consider his offering that information as dishonorable to ensure his own safety.

Now, as far as a test *as president* - no, neither one of them has been tested in that way, and surely either of them would be. Based on what we've seen of them, I think reasonable people conclude that Obama is the one who would deal with a crisis intelligently, thoughtfully, patiently, diplomatically (to the full extent possible), and in the best interests of the entire nation. Look how McCain responded to the economic crisis -- erratic would be a kind description.

The media is not liberal or conservative...the media are collectively STUPID!...with a few rare and notable exceptions, of course.

This was never so clearly demonstrated as with their sad excuse for intelligent reporting on this issue.

This has been playing in Ohio all morning and I think it's a great rebuttal.

I saw the ad, it is a good one. It helps set the record straight. As Obama has said, I may not strike the first blow, but I will hit back.

An economic meltdown. Two wars. And John McCain's playing with audiotapes.

What McCain appears not to be playing with is a full deck.
