Olbermann: Sarah Palin Is A Socialist

In a Special Campaign Comment, Keith Olbermann cites yet another example of the McCain campaign accusing Barack Obama of something of which they themselves are guilty. In this case, Sarah Palin is accusing Barack Obama of advocating socialism when she literally used that word to describe the collective wealth sharing in her home state of Alaska.

As an Arizona resident for many years I can vouch for the fact that McCain is an angry, mean and spiteful man. I lived through the Keating 5 mess. Also I am a white, female practicing Catholic who will not be told how to vote. I have to vote my conscience and Obama is the only choice for me. I changed my voter registration to Democratic this year. Personally, I am against abortion but I do not want to choose for anyone else. So religious persons can also be for Obama if they only look at the overall picture. The other news channels just do not report the news in a fair and honest fashion. I now only listen to Keith and Rachel. Love them!

KO is absolutely correct to call out the hypocrisy and fraudulency of Palin's attacks of "socialism" against Obama:

Fact: Socialism is a system of social organization in which goods and resources are owned, controlled and distributed collectively or by a centralized government, often without competition.
Fact: Alaska's public lands and natural resources are leased to private oil companies to generate public revenue, much like middle eastern economies.
Fact: Palin advocates and facilitates sharing Alaska's oil and natural gas revenues with Alaskans in the form of checks mailed to every Alaskan every year. They call the checks "dividends".
Fact: What Alaska is doing, and what Palin supports is socialism.
Fact: Palin accuses Obama of being socialist for his support of the United States' progressive income tax system, in place since the early 1900s.

Olbermann's point was very cool and Palin was so busted. She was hoist on her own petard.

But the real Issue is not the flinging of the term socialism around, accusing everyone and their dog of this alleged dreaded disease. The question is -is this still a free country or not? Are we to understand that in the USA in 2008 no one can be a socialist, read about socialism, have an opinion that it might have something to recommend it, that an individual might prefer that viewpoint? Are we not allowed to even THINK this way?

Not to say that Palin's comments weren't unprincipled simple-minded opportunism, but in this case the citizens of Alaska already own their natural resources, so it's their own wealth - not someone else's - that's being redistributed.

It's the oil companies wealth that is being redistributed. That would be the same thing as taking wealthy people's money and redistributing it. It's the profits not the actual resource.

Exactly! And what's so ridiculous is that in all those McCain stump speeches he's warning the yahoos that "Obama wants to redistribute your wealth!" WHAT WEALTH??? Those people standing behind him are not wealthy! If I know it, I'm sure they know it -- it boggles the imagination how blindly people will follow, booing on cue, even when it's blatantly against their own best interests.

Oil companies do not create new wealth, they just move around the wealth of the oil. Do the oil companies own the oil outright? Or did they freely agree to pay the rightful owners (citizens) a royalty? A royalty is legitimate income, not a socialist hand-out. (I don't know the answer in terms of Alaska law; I'm just pointing out it might not be as clear-cut as you think.)

Of course, Palin was clearly thinking in terms of socialism, regardless of the actual ownership question.
