Mail in your ballot.

That's not an option for everyone in a state with early voting. In mine, only the sick, elderly, or out-of-town can mail in their ballots.

just curious, what state are you in?

This is absurd. Here are two MASSIVE dangers..

1. Machines either falsely record votes b/c of bad calibration, or prompt voters to a confusing and error-prone "write-in" screen - effect, DELAYS and long voting lines. result: diminished turn out.

2. ES&S (a notoriously Republican owned & operated company employing fraud felons at the executive level) will be sending technicians to polling stations to tamper with in-use machines.

This is insane, and a technician tampering with a machine that has recorded or will continue to record votes, is a NIGHTMARE. The technician doesn't have to consiously be doing anything diabolical, the program altering codeing/virus can exist on their access key. These machines were proven hackable by Princeton University. See the documentary "Hacking Democracy."

Oh, come on - how many times per day are ATMs used without an appreciable error rate? If we don't have reliable voting machines, it can only be because someone doesn't want us to.

Here's the kicker...

Diebold is the biggest maker of ATM machines.

Why is that ATM's have handled millions of SECURE transactions every hour, yet Diebold can't build a voting machine with the same security protection?

Oh...never mind. I understand now.

"Diebold is the biggest maker of ATM machines."

Eeee, I didn't know THAT!

Great info - thanks.

Seriously. An iPod is probably 10000th of the size of a voting machine, can do anything including playing movies, with a near zero error rate.. and for $200.

In the documentary "Hacking Democracy" they bought a Diebold (I think) system, and had a professional computer builder disassemble and assess it... it we astounded how old the technology was, like a decade old. If there are errors and problems with these machines, and its not intentional, its because they're assembled from scraps.
Do we build our ambulances with scrap from the junkyard? No. Why our voting machines?

We can't get a dirt cheap sound voting machine? I don't buy it. There must be federal restrictions on voting machine licensing, b/c if the basic princples of the market were working, we'd have exactly what we want (if we wanted e-voting) for $50 a machine probably.

"We can't get a dirt cheap sound voting machine?"

Sure we can. It's called a paper ballot marked in ink and dropped into a padlocked box, then counted and verified by three human beings working in public view.

But that would be too likely to produce "unfavorable" results for the GOP.

Well, if the vote does get tipped to Baldwin or Nader then maybe I'll reconsider that cheating does pay.

I have two concerns.

1. Each time they have to come to recalibrate the machine it might erase all previous vote recorded.

2. The machines will be like the ones in Tennessee. The green party Ms. McKinney last week has an interview on C-Span TV/Radio. She said she had to write a letter that voters who voted for Obama votes were changed to her. She said she did not want to be involved with any scams.

It doesn't have to tip in a visibly significant way to a third party candidate, only enough to destroy the margin of O over McC. That's why we need a *huge* landslide victory, so none of those attempts will be even remotely plausible.

Incredible.

Machines today VERY rarely make mistakes unless input was suspect OR if it was programmed to cheat.

We MUST have a paper trail and long term storage/verification of ALL ballots. That way we KNOW what the Input was. Then, there's just one other scenario if not accurate ...

Of all the computer machines in today's life, only these voting machines seem to 'act funny' ... Let's just see how it goes on election day. VERY simple machines to run properly with today's technology. So who controls the programming ... who resets the output ... if anyone?

No software should ever come between a voter and his/her vote! ALL OF IT is SUSPECT!

This i diot calibrates the machine, tests it, finds that it gives a wrong result and says "it's out of calibration". So what's the answer - calibrate again? Obviously the so-called calibration doesn't work.

This is amazing. Like Alice In Wonderland ... without the shrooms.

MAYBE the machine IS 'calibrated' after all.

Isn't this too much like Three Card Monte?

What happens to the votes that were recorded before he calibrated the machine again?

Electronic voting is a joke, it's overcomplicated, unreliable, and overly technical compared to traditional ballots. I have no faith in these machines, there's way to much shadyness associated with them for me to feel comfortable with. And when people lose faith in the electoral system of this country, questioning whether their vote will even be counted or if it will it be given to the opposition, all is lost.

I'd guess that I would expect something as critical as voting would require a device with much more reliability than what we're seeing here. Even after "calibrating" the device, it messed up. How did something that functions this poorly get on the market and why would anyone ever choose to use it??

Now it all makes sense. The trick isn't to make the machines register the wrong vote. The trick is to make the process as complicated as possible so it takes longer for each person to finish. Keep the lines long densely populated areas that typically vote a certain way.

Rev, you hit the nail on the head. As I watched I realized that the damn machine would probaly break for each voter. And you saw how long it took the guy too fix it. This was designed to do this. If these folks can make ATM machines that are highl yreliable, why can't they do the same for voting machines?

Oh. My. God. How did touchscreen voting machines ever ever ever ever get approved for use in elections?

1. Our elected officials claim they had our interest but instead it has been for them and their family running for office.

2. Not having a great community organizer to keep us informed of issues that we should stand up and vote against.

Thank you that's the first time I have cracked a smile, I've been scowling since I took a look at this article, all through the comments. This whole issue is so directly at the heart of democracy, it gets me riled up like nothing else in politics - I feel like a right-wing nut sputtering about socialism when I try to talk about it. So thanks :)

& thank god for our Community Organizer In Chief!!
