After watching this video, it does indeed seem like a simple calibration problem. But it's still disconcerting.

Quite frankly, it's not just voting machines we need to worry about. Machines can't act out of malice. Human beings can, and I'd expect and election to be stolen by human beings and not by a computer. Even if we all had paper ballots, there can most certainly be voter fraud. At this point it's the only way McCain can win the election, so the only antidote to this is to get enough Obama voters out there to weigh against those who'll end up disenfranchised. And believe me, they will.

A "calibration problem"? When you vote straight party line Democrat, the vote defaults to McCain? Sorry, but there is NO way this is a calibration problem.

Notice that right after he did the calibration, it failed. The source code should be examined by several independent labs. No hiding behind trade secrets. This is too important for ensuring a companies profit.

Let's hear it for paper!

I've worked in the IT industry for over a decade and I am very nervous about these touch-screen voting machines because they are so glitchy. Plus, I don't care how secure you THINK those systems are, the right people with enough money to get the right resources would have little problem getting in there and throwing the whole election one way or the other. Luckily we have a choice where I live, so I'll be sticking to the paper ballot until we can get quantum encryption on voting machines.

This is a tempest in a teapot. The man is displaying a machine that is malfunctioning, that is improperly set up. He then fixes the problem and shows it working properly.

I do agree, however, that the idea of putting a computer in front of a voter is unnecessarily expensive and can lead to more flaws. The more complex a system, the greater the chance for problems.

We use Inka-Vote in California. Mark your choices on a paper card ballot; a computerized card reader later reads them. It is the best combination of a paper ballot with an audit trail and computerized efficiency/accuracy in vote counting.

Look at it again. He did the calibration and then it failed again. In addition to that, when a properly written screen handler is written, it divides the screen into zones. If the screen is miss calibrated it will just shift the positions of the on screen zones so that you tried to pick a candidate with a miss calibrated machine, you would get the one next to it. Something is very wrong with the software for it to jump in the fashion shown. These machines are crap from any manufacturer.

There are many people that won't even go through the self check aisle at Stop and Shop. I have huge reservations about this machine.

It's simple: CHECK THE PAPER PRINTOUT BEFORE SUBMITTING THE VOTE!

We vote on a touch screen diebold here in Collin county Texas. We do not have a print out, only a button to verify { as if that couldn't be wrong}

You are wrong, its not that simple. The machine should work correctly each and every time.

The documentary "UNCOUNTED"- which is available on Comcast "on-demand" in its free movie section this month, is an in-depth report of this type of voter FRAUD.

This Diebold machine was purposefully made and purchased because there is NO AUDIT TRAIL, in the form of a paper printout or otherwise.

Diebold is an ATM company. Why would they make a machine that is incapable of being audited? They have been making ATM's that print out paper receipts and have reliable audit trails for 20 years.

Do Republicans really want to deal with the ramifications of stealing THIS election?

If they steal this one, there WILL be rioting in the steets.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:58 PM on 10/29/2008

Yes, there will be.

The Republinazis keep saying if Obama wins there'll be another civil war.

They won't know what hit them if they steal a third federal election.

They don't care. If their are riots, it'll just be another excuse for them to take away your civil liberties, enforce curfews and gain a tighter grip over your society.

Actually they'd see it as a great opportunity and spin it in their favour.

If you allow this election to be stolen. your country is doomed, my friends. There will be nothing to stop the neo-con agenda, the GOP will just rig every election from here-on-in.

It's up to you to save your country.

VOTE + Report vote machine errors or intimidation tactics outside poling depots or any other shenanigans you come up against, contact the obama campaign office and let them know immediately!

is this really necessary? does EVERYTHING have to be on a computer?

honestly... and i'm only 19, obsessed with my own techno-gizmos but honestly... does it really need to be electronic?

this is what a police state will look like...

These machines are such a farce. In this age of technology we have voting machines that sound and behave like some cheap toy out of the l950's. There is no excuse or good reason for this, unless the object of the game is to steal elections. Period!

I agree 100%. Didn't we figure out how to send a man to the moon in the 70's? AND yet we can't get a voting machine to work! I live in Texas and cast a paper ballot every year, don't fool with the machines.

Democracy Now had Brad Friedman of The Brad Blog and Harvey Wasserman of Free Press.org. They both gave examples of vote flipping machines in Florida, no paper ballots in case of malfunctioning el machines in West Virginia. The printing company Sequoia not printing enough absentee ballots for folks in Colorado that had to arrive last saturday. And they kept asking where is the involment from the Democratic Party lawyers, why not a peek out of them. Are they going to bend over again in Ohio, Florida?

I have yet to use on ATM machine that had a badly "calibrated" touch screen. Outside of a swap meet, in convenience stores, at banks, all across the country. They all work just fine. The touch points always line up. This is so bogus.

Diebold makes ATM machines that are well-calibrated, have paper print-outs and a reliable audit trail.

Then Diebold makes voting machines that have none of these.

Walden O'Dell, the CEO, is a top fundraiser and contributor to the Republican party.

Wikipedia found that edits to the Diebold page- removing criticisms about the voting machines and about the company ties to Bush, had been performed from an IP address at Diebold (Deibold edited the Wiki article to cover this up).

Computers should never be used for voting, especially not in the USA. Also, the voting format should be uniform across the states.

"the voting format should be uniform across the states."

Unfortunately, in the United States we have no legal way to enforce a consistent voting format or technology. Each state has the right to conduct elections its own way. Changing this would require an Amendment to the Constitution.

These touch-screen systems, with or without printed verification, are a truly rotten idea. With a machine-generated paper trail, or no paper record at all, there's no reliable way to ensure that the vote hasn't been fiddled with even without obvious problems like "bad calibration".

The only trustworthy paper trail using these new technologies would be an optical scan ballot, filled in by the voter, by hand.

Their whole purpose and development was for corruption, so they serve their purpose for those who initiated their use.

The people of America need to speak up and let their voice be heard on this subject or your 'democracy' will continue to be viewed as a sham throughout the world.

yeah there you go... the real point... that other countries think it's a sham... that's a great argument because, as everybody knows, the constitution was originally drawn up to prevent ridicule by other nations...

hey EVERYBODY... do it so that foreigners will think we're legit and then pretend like it really matters what they think....

or maybe you should do it for your own civil liberties and well-being....

That's not trustworthy either. Did you see the film of someone hacking the cartridge of an optical scanner and flipping the votes? The cartridges contain software that enables vote flipping. Optical scanners are corruptible. The problem is that the voting machine companies are privately owned by people who have a vested interest in who becomes president.
