"Is the US some kind of banana republic???"

Has been for a while, it's amazing what people put up with. People, please take your country back from the neo-con mafia.

And we are trying to export this kind of democracy to other nations, eg. Iraq.

I remember when they first started selling the machines with no paper trail. The right wing pundits were screaming about how stupid we were to want paper trails. That was total nonsense, to be treated with contempt because we wanted to be able to verify our votes. I always wondered if they were paid to say what they did.

This is a farce with tragic consequences. God! I think what we have is hypocrisy definitely not democracy.

I am a computer expert. This whole "calibration" idea is a fraud. There ain't no such thing, as demonstrated here. These machines are obviously and blatantly programmed to do EXACTLY what they do. It isn't the CPU. That is another absurdity.

Although I agree that all the voting machines in their current incarnation are far too unreliable for our elections, I call BS on your "expert status".

Any "computer expert" worth their salt knows that ALL *TOUCH* screens have to be calibrated. Nobody said jack about calibrating the "CPU". You, sir, are a fraud.

maybe the United Nations should monitor our elections like they do in other fledgling democracies...

These machines are crap not corrupt.
I have to calibrate various touch screens from time to time but not frequently and the margin of error is small. They are badly built and run by poorly trained technicians.

"The margin of error is small"? Have you been asleep for eight years? When the presidency can hinge on a few thousand votes in one state, what is your definition of "small,' and how comfortable should anyone be with that?

They steal Florida and Ohio now they are getting bold ready to steal WV?? Why not print a receipt that you could check later online enough of us would check to make sure we got the meal we paid for. 21st century and we cant make a voting machine that works and cant be compromised this is sad. The Republicans dont care that we know what they have been doing.

Wow - WTF year is it again??? It is 2008 people and this sort of thing is rediculous. STUPID and these problems are built INTO the machine!! Paper ballots for chrying out loud!

When are Americans going to realize that e-voting is 100% unverifiable?

When?

When?

When are Americans going to realize that without a paper ballot that is physically dropped into a box and is counted by a human being is the only way you can be assured that your vote is counted.

It blows me away every time that Americans are still using these black-boxes for the foundation of their democracy. It's a sick joke.

I have a friend who's mother use to work at ES&S as a developer and he has told me many times she would comment that most of the developers working there didn't understand what they were doing. The Machine uses a CPU that is not very common and at that time required that much of the code was written in machine language or assembler language.

Assembler is a very easy to understand language.

They know exactly what they're doing.

OK, so he calibrated it and it went out of calibration almost immediately. Are they going to have someone in each booth recalibrating it every time (and even during) somone votes?

The good news is that these methods are being caught early .... African Americans know that their votes are being covertly targeted by reThugs ... they are making noise about each & every incident !!!

Shame on the repug party for attempting to deny american (tax paying) citizens their voting rights !!!

I have a hand calculator that I use almost daily - I bought it in 1985, and have only changed the batteries 4 times. Now you're going to tell me that something as important as a voting machine has a "problem"? If it does, the problem was engineered into it. The answer, mechanical machines with paper output. Not so good for the environment, but HONEST. The world needs to know.
