Our votes should never be outsourced to private companies. I know there can be glitches with any computer system, but why would these machines get out of calibration so often? Sounds like a poor design that needs to be scrapped. Back to paper ballots in the technology age.

This is very frightening. Use a paper ballot.

I'll second that motion. Paper ballots. Paper trail.

I think this is awful, but I'm more inclined to blame incompetence over conspiracy.

The machines were most likely built by the low bidder. As such, they are probably more like to lose calibration. I think it's a stretch to suggest that this is an organized attempt to steal the election. More likely it is an incompetent attempt to make voting machines.

Still, everybody needs to pay attention and be vigilant.

Incompetence is something these clowns seem to be highly competent at.

the mere fact that Diebold / Premier Election Solutions is ALLOWED to do business this year (or ever) is reprehensible!

Question is: Will the Democrats give this election to the Republicans on a silver platter just as Pelosi has given them everything else? Gore and Kerry had no problem conceding to "look" like good sports. Who were robbed right under their nose.

Isn't the guy that own Diebold a staunch republican??? There was a woman who was featured in a documentary who found the source keys... I think it was called "blackbox"...... this is shameful...

I'm as pissed as the next person, but in an age of Firefox, Linux, and so on, why don't some of you computer geniuses make an open-source, TRANSPARENT voting software solution? If it's that easy, take these damn voting-machine-companies down with free software.

As I understand it the source codes are known only to Diebold.Diebold built the machines and nobody can write a new program without the source codes. If anyone knows different, feel free to correct/educate me.

It strikes me that the solution is optical scan machines. They count the votes quickly, but there is a paper trail for recounts. Why bother with this touch screen fiasco? At least W.Va. requires a voter-verified paper trail.

An open-source high-level design can be developed by gleaning requirements from the machine's operation, legal requirements, etc. Knowledge of the hardware platform or the hardware abstraction layer would be needed to actually create the code.

I was disturbed at early voting in Albuquerque yesterday by a ban on phones, which the guy at the door said was because so many have cameras. Phones weren't taken away, but were supposed to be turned off.

We have paper ballots (optically scanned, but at least there's a trail) and I observed no irregularities.. However, not being allowed to use a phone on the premises undermines the major thrust of protect-the-vote operations that advise us to report problems immediately to the attorneys on call at 866-OUR-VOTE and to local government and party officials -- and not to leave until errors are corrected.

Are others seeing phone-ban signs? If this is widespread, something should be done before Election Day.

Walk out of the building, call the authorities, wait for them to arrive and escort them in and RAISE HELL.

It is TIME to take back america.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:05 AM on 10/29/2008

How can they enforce that? Not a 'law' is it - just a request. Just make sure your phone is on slient and if you need to take photos do it. If you suspect ANYTHING call or text the appropriate authorities. Don't hesitate!

Yeah, here in Durham, NC - could not bring cell phones, cameras (video or still) into the Board of Elections.

I have to agree that you shouldn't be taking pictures or video in the PUBLIC waiting areas of the voting room-- I'd legitimately say that could turn into voter intimidation. Also you shouldn't be carrying on loud conversations about who you plan to vote for and why. There are legitimate privacy concerns Democrats and Progressives should guard.

But have it handy in the PRIVATE AREA. That should be your right. And if a problem or complaits break out, whip that baby out (there's strength in numbers).

But I imagine that if you call the police about just generally recording and taking pictures before anything bad happens, the police will generally defer to the election officials, right or wrong.

In New Mexico in 2004, there was a 25% UNDERCOUNT in the presidential election- this means that 25% of the people voting somehow did not vote in the presidential election. This was much heavier in the Native American districts. It is highly suspected that this undercount is a type of voter fraud resulting in many votes being electronically discarded.

One of the only ways to verify your vote is by taking a picture of your ballot or machine when you cast your vote. If everyone who was voting took a picture of the ballot/machine with their ID, then there would be PROOF that a certain number of votes were actually cast. If you have less votes for a candidate than pictures of ballots for candidates, voter fraud could be proven.

It doesn't matter if it hops to McCain or someone other than McCain. It's funneling votes away from Obama, which works the same way either way. The only word I have for this guy is "OOPS."

1) Are the votes actually being tabulated when they flip, or do you have to hit a confirm or submit button to send your vote to be tabulated?

2) If paper ballots are available, ask for a paper ballot.

3) Why aren't the machines taken out once they have been pointed out to be committing "errors"?

4) Does anyone have the legal right to ban cameras or phones (turned on) from the voting area?

It appears that particular machine does create a paper trail and you do have to confirm your selection after checking the printout and reviewing the screen. That does not mean what is stored in memory might not be altered so an audit of a sample is needed.

Exactly, the 2000 butterfly ballot funneled votes from Gore to Buchanan. Maybe you could suppose a FEW people misunderstood the Bush line too and some of his votes got flipped, but if the flipping happens only in an area known to have a certain preponderance of a party's registration, even if ALL candidates flip, it waters down the results in a wider area.

If that is TRUE, the tape needs to be expedited to the local FBI, IRS or whomever to hell with help.

What a pathetic situation and government.
