Oh. My. God. This is no way to run a democratic process. Many other countries have experimented with electronic voting machines over the last decade or so, and many of them have abandoned the system to go back to paper and pen. This gives you a paper-trail, is actually harder to tamper with, and CANNOT have problems with 'callibration'. Not everything needs to be hi-tech...

Fingers crossed this isn't what decides the election...

If Iraq was good enough for paper ballots with inked thumb prints, then so are we.

And India, the largest democracy in the world, seems to manage with paper and pen.

What I find most compelling is that the majority of ATM's, which work just fine 99.999% of the time, are made by Diebold.

How is it possible that a company can manufacture two similar machines, one of which functions to perfection, and the other famously flawed in favoring a specific party with every error?

Depends on the instructions of the client, I would say. Who ordered the election machines?

Why weren't the state police or the state AG called in immediately when this occured (the alleged "re-calibration" failure)? The blase' attitude of calling in a tech to "fix" the problem is ridiculous. ALL the machines should have been impounded and paper ballots issued. The Electoral College should not accept any West Virginia delegate unless paper ballots are used and counted. The state should be suing ESS for a total refund plus penalties. A criminal investigation should also be contemplated. This is what's wrong with this country when $750 billion can be spent bailing out greed heads but we can't provide an honest, verifiable voting system? Just another banana republic

I've been waiting for this rage. Every educated voter in West Virginia should be calling the office of the Attorney General to ask these questions, and keep asking them until you get an answer.

I am a West Virginia resident.
I voted early two days ago.
I voted in the Ohio county area.
As I used the machine, I watched carefully/attentively to make absolutely SURE that none of these shenanigans were at hand.
I suggest that everyone scrutinize the process. Take a few additional moments to assure yourself that your votes are accurate...I'm confident mine were.

Onward towards Democrat victory. Obama 08'

How many days in Iraq would it cost to correct the electoral system and to create uniform, fair standards?

What you're actually asking is - How much does it cost for papers and pens, which is the system used by every other Democratic country?

At $15M per hour, probably not even a full day.

Not a fan of using national voting machines but when the machines are stored in areas accessable to many and not locked up in a secure loaction all across the US where they are used there should be laws and standards just like at the ATMs and gas pumps and anywhere there is a need to watch over public access machines. Congress should set standards with heavy fines when the laws are broken and jail time for hackers into the machines. This all is tied to the Constitution and the right to vote.

note that no machine has EVER in recorded history switched votes the other way.

interesting that the 'errors' are always in the same direction

if the Dems have owned congress for 2 years, how come this is still happening?

The republicans learned more than a decade ago that the most important political offices for them to win are the county clerks and state secretaries of state. The jobs, while usually political, have traditionally been held by little old ladies who are more civil servants than politicians. The republicans recognized that these are the people who run the elections. So they found real party hacks to run for those jobs - people with no ethics and a willingness to do anything to help the party win. They can manage the voter registration and deregistration process to their advantage, select technology that lets them control the results, and count the vote as they see fit with limited oversight. Once the republicans had those positions they could make certain they win the other elections. We saw this in 2000, but have not focused enough on getting these people out of office.

How ridiculous is this? No one in America can make voting machines that just work? Our bank machines work -- can you get those guys to make a voting machine? The computers at my son's kindergarten work -- when you press for Mickey Mouse to dance and sing, it doesn't come up with Sponge Bob reciting the alphabet. Can we get the IT tech from Bearwood Road Nursery to make a voting machine?!!

Get out and vote, don't be discouraged.

Some states may have skewed or even fixed results, but if the Obama landslide is all over the place he'll still win.

When you enter your PIN in an ATM machine to withdraw money, it doesn't take it from someone else's bank account by mistake. Diebold makes ATM machines. If they can make those work properly, they can make a voting machine work properly.

Bank that purchase ATMs insist that they are accurate.

Republican voting officials who purchase voting machines insist that they not be accurate.

Diebold merely serves the customer.
