Talking Points Memo:

John McCain and the Republican National Committee are now running robocalls attacking Obama as weak on terrorism -- in McCain's home state of Arizona, according to multiple readers from the state.

The call signals genuine worry about McCain's home state at a time when several polls show the race to be much closer than expected there.

I received a robocall today about 2:00pm from John McCain's campaign against Senator Obama. I live in Arizona and this is the first call I have rec'd.

I called the number back from the caller id number and left a message complaining and asking them not to call me again. Can we flood their phone number with calls at 1-866-520-5769 maybe we can cost them a lot of money in phone charges, if we can't clog the line?

I also reported the call to the FCC because I consider this abusive language coming into my home and when I hung up the call was not disconnected within 5 seconds, which is one of the questions asked by the FCC. Also, I reported this under an unwanted telemarketing call - hope the FCC gets thousands of complaints. https://esupport.fcc.gov/form1088/1088cform.do

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind.

It would be a rare treat for Obama to win Arizona. A national repudiation of republican policies and political tactics and of McCain himself is due. May they reap what they've sown.

I just got the call - I wrote down the text:

"Hi, Arizona? I don't know if you remember me, but we used to know each other. You even gave me a job once, remember? No, no, this isn't John the Gardener. You know, it's me, John the Senator.

"Look, I know I haven't really kept in touch, and I know I haven't really done anything for you for quite awhile. But I need a favor.

"I'm outta cash, and I might lose this job I'm trying for. Could you loan me a 5-spot and a vote?

"..oh, you already voted? You did? that's great!.... oh..oh... I see. You're one of Those Ones."

Sorry, John. You forgot about us in AZ, then you forgot about the real you. Now it's our turn to put the past behind us.

Allot of voters in Arizonia cannot stand the thought of Mc Cain for Pres because they know he has a hair trigger temper and believe he is not a honest man.

People in Arizonia know him well and he is now barly holding on to a lead there.

I was raised in Arizonia and we all knew Mc Cain had a mean streak and temper.

Not this time Mc Cain we know a pres. these days with a temper places Americans and the worl in harms way.

I live in Chandler , Arizona this morning at my gym there were 3 older white guys(no offense) in there 50 - 60's wearing Obama tshirts working out...do not let them fool you, we have been working very hard in this State to wipe out the evil backlash of our "Good old boys" republican stronghold, for the last 6 years we've had a female Democrat Govenor and the State loves her, her approval ratings are always in the high 60's. Before her the last 3 govenors were either kicked out, arrested or just plan Jane crap. We have learned our lesson...no more repubs....

Obama's got class. Betcha he could stump AZ and turn it blue in one day. But no, he would not go there.

Can't claim credit for this quote/sentiment as I saw it on another site, but this isn't a political phone call, it's a suicide note.

I live in Arizona too, I was hoping we would miss all this junk and just quietly turn this state blue without all this crap, no such luck.

I would love for AZ to go for Obama, but as a AZ resident I can definitely predict that, except for Tucson and its immediate vicinity, AZ will definitely vote for McCain. Remember this is the state whose Republican party declared Goldwater a heretic, demanded that fluride be removed from water, thinks Jon Kyl is a moderate, and John McCain is a liberal.

The only reason that the RNC is running robocalls HERE is that they think McCain should win by a huge margin rather than a mere 10% to 15%.

The Republicans are getting weirder than usual.

McCain's campaign is talking a good game about closing the gap and winning all of those swing states, but let's think about this realistically. If he really feels that AZ is completely safe, then he shouldn't need to waste a single dollar there as he gets their 10 EVs whether he wins by 3% or 30%. McCain's having to defend 3EVs in MONTANA of all places. If McCain's campaign believes that AZ is completely safe, then he has to believe that PA is completely safe for Obama as PA's most recent polls show an Obama lead there that's double the BEST recent McCain lead. Conversely, if McCain believes that PA is in play, then he has to know that AZ, MT, ND, SD, GA, and even WV are in play, not to mention IN, MO, FL, and NC.

I'm not saying that McCain can't draw the inside straight, but if he's trying to make everyone else, including himself, believe that this hand can be won with three 8s, he's either not understanding reality or he's just trying to talk himself into a calm state.

I had TWO robocalls waiting on my machine when I returned home - this is in Flagstaff.
Wow. I feel special. Not so special that I listened to them all the way through....

Yesterday, in a parking lot, I counted six Obama stickers - none for McCain, and I wasn't really looking - just walking from my car to the store. After I returned to my car, a woman tapped on my window to say she really liked the sticker on my back window - it is an Obama sticker and is right next to the "Retired Air Force" sticker. It is my husband's car and he wanted everyone to know that he is a veteran for Obama.

I predict the northern end of Arizona will be as blue as the sky over Flagstaff. I think the Tuscon area will be, too. Phoenix, I am not so sure of, but I am hopeful. Wouldn't it be amazing if Obama took Arizona?

This really is a big deal - McCain won his seat in the Senate in the last lection by nearly 80% of the vote. He has really lost favor here in the last month.

I am down here in the Phoenix area and I see a significantly higher number of Obama stickers on the road and a lot of yard signs too, almost 5:1 difference.

Arizonans…GET OUT AND VOTE OBAMA !!!!
