Shays: McCain Can't Win; Lost His "Maverick" Brand

The first ballot has yet to be tallied, but some Republicans are already hammering nails into the McCain-Palin campaign's coffin.

Locked in a tight congressional race, Rep. Chris Shays of Connecticut's 4th district is the latest in a slew of Republican incumbents, including Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, to concede a near-certain victory to the Obama camp.

"I just don't see how [McCain] can win," Shays said in an interview here on Sunday.

Shays, the Connecticut co-chair of McCain's campaign, said he was disappointed by the standards of McCain's race, which has increasingly relied on mudslinging.

"He has lost his brand as a maverick; he did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign," Shays said.

I've never seen Bill so fired up for Obama. He was like a different person. Other times he seemed lukewarm, almost insincere, apathetic and the like. But tonight even his facial expressions matched his strong and supportive words. I believe he really meant what he said.

I wasn't very happy with him during Hillary's campaign and for a long time after she got out of the running. And until today and as I indicated above, I didn't think his support of Obama was anything but lukewarm, which made me even m@dder. But tonight he really did shine for Obama, in my view. It may be that he has gotten over his disappointment for Hillary and is more evened out now.

Understandable that their disappointment would have been very great. I've read that it takes a candidate who l0ses a race a long, long time to get over it, that losing just g.uts them.

Its gotten to the point if McCain is speaking on TV - I change the channel. I can't take the negativity anymore and its getting ludicrous.
We all knew that they would pull the terrorist card and try to make people afraid of electing someone other than McCain - hey it worked for the Republicans the last time around - but to try and make it seem as though your appointment is the terrorist - that is gutter politics beyond belief.
My wife- who voted for Bush and is a Republican leaning independent - voted for Obama.
She said that in the end it was the negative campaign of McCain that decided it for her.
