Shays: McCain Can't Win; Lost His "Maverick" Brand

The first ballot has yet to be tallied, but some Republicans are already hammering nails into the McCain-Palin campaign's coffin.

Locked in a tight congressional race, Rep. Chris Shays of Connecticut's 4th district is the latest in a slew of Republican incumbents, including Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, to concede a near-certain victory to the Obama camp.

"I just don't see how [McCain] can win," Shays said in an interview here on Sunday.

Shays, the Connecticut co-chair of McCain's campaign, said he was disappointed by the standards of McCain's race, which has increasingly relied on mudslinging.

"He has lost his brand as a maverick; he did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign," Shays said.

Let's recap some recent statements/events:

Biden is asked some tough questions in Orlando. Respose by Obama--cry foul and deny further interviews.

Sarkoozy says Obama's approach with Iran is "utterly immature". and that Obama is basically clueless. Should we care what France says? No except that France is one of the allies Obama claims Bush alienated. The Israeli press picked up on Sarkozy's statements in a major way. Why?

Obama says the Warren Court was not that radical because it did not legislate wealth redistribution from the bench.

Obama states that the Constitution is a flawed document.

Today, for the first time, the Rasmussen poll shows that more people have faith in McCain than Obama with respect to economic issues.

Here in PA, older voters are realizing that Obama is an unknown quantity. The gap is narrowing. If Obama loses PA, he is in trouble.

Family members in my native Lithuania and other former Soviet Bloc countries aerw scared to death of Obama in view of the events in Georgia and Obama's total misread of that situation.

In reality, there are many who have grown up with an "entitlement" mentality and think that they wil receive many goodies from Obama without having to work for them.

Joe will be 74 in 2012. I don't doubt he could be capable (Nader is 74, and he is capable), but what if not?

Who will be Dem candidate in 2012? I would consider Hillary respectable, though too right-wing; and will she be to old? Who else?

I'm a Shay's constituent. I've followed closely, and he did not break from Bush policy in any significant manner. When McCain offered an opportunity to break in a "saving face" manner, Shays jumped fully on board. But the reality is, neither Shays nor McCain has displayed the "Truth" or sincere empathy for returning veterans that they claim.

Scars are definitely nasty and sad, but true support of our soldiers and veterans is Priceless. Neither Shays nor McCain has proven that the "Maverick" brand accurately portrays any way that they would help American families or American Military Families.
