Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin summon antidemocratic images of a communist state to attack Democrat Barack Obama's tax plan and his comment about spreading the wealth around. But in her home state, Palin embraces Alaska's own version of doing just that.

Palin and McCain seized on a comment Obama made to Ohio plumber Joe Wurzelbacher, who asked about his tax plans.

Obama wants to raise taxes on families earning $250,000 to pay for cutting taxes for the 95 percent of workers and their families making less than $200,000. "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody," he told Wurzelbacher.

McCain said that sounds "a lot like socialism" to many Americans. Palin has derided the Illinois senator as "Barack the Wealth Spreader."

But in Alaska, Palin is the envy of governors nationwide for the annual checks the state doles out to nearly every resident, representing their share of the revenues from the state's oil riches. She boosted those checks this year by raising taxes on oil.

McCain campaign spokesman Taylor Griffin said Thursday that spreading wealth through Obama's tax plan and doing it through Alaska's oil-profit distribution are not comparable because Alaska requires the state's resource wealth to be shared with residents, but it's not taxing personal income.

"It's how the revenue is shared between the oil companies and the state."

A look at Palin's and McCain's comments and the record in Alaska:

THE SPIN:

"Barack Obama calls it spreading the wealth. Joe Biden calls higher taxes patriotic," Palin told a crowd in Roswell, N.M., and elsewhere. "But Joe the Plumber and Ed the Dairyman, I believe they think it sounds more like socialism.

"Friends, now is no time to experiment with socialism."

In Ohio, she asked, "Are there any Joe the Plumbers in the house?" To cheers, she said, "It doesn't sound like you're supporting Barack the Wealth Spreader."

McCain told a radio audience that Obama's plan "would convert the IRS into a giant welfare agency, redistributing massive amounts of wealth at the direction of politicians in Washington."

"Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut; it's just another government giveaway."

THE FACTS:

In Alaska, residents pay no income tax or state sales tax. They receive a yearly dividend check from a $30 billion state investment account built largely from royalties on its oil. When home fuel and gas costs soared last year, Palin raised taxes on big oil and used some of the money to boost residents' checks by $1,200. Thus every eligible man, woman and child got a record $3,269 this fall.

She also suspended the 8-cent tax on gas.

"We can afford to share resource wealth with Alaskans and to temporarily suspend the state fuel tax," she said at the time.

Much as Obama explains his tax hike on the rich as a way to help people who are struggling, Palin's statement talked about the energy costs burdening Alaskans:

"While the unique fiscal circumstances the state finds itself in at the end of this fiscal year warrant a special one-time payment to share some of the state's wealth, the payment comes at a time when Alaskans are facing rising energy prices. High prices for oil are a double-edged sword for Alaskans. While public coffers fill, prices for heating fuel and gasoline have skyrocketed over the last six months and are now running into the $5- to $9-a-gallon range for heating fuel and gasoline across several areas of the state."

In an interview with The New Yorker last summer Palin explained that she would make demands of a new gas pipeline "to maximize benefits for Alaskans":

"And Alaska we're set up, unlike other states in the union, where it's collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs."

Gee, yet another lie ... Surprise (not)!

It's quite obvious that Palin's popularity as Governor has been based on the fact that she happened to be in the lucky position of distributing out that Oil money to the citizens of Alaska.

And then she and McCain have the nerve to call Obama a socialist? Oh wait ... I'm probably being sexist because I've stated facts. Oh no, wait .. the latest from Sarah is that I'm violating her first amendment rights.

Golly gee, it must be nice to be able to create your own reality where everyone's got to do exactly what you say. You betcha!

Thomas Friedman in his latest book: "Hot, Flat, and Crowded", forwards an interesting factoid that fits Sara to a 'T":

When oil-rich governments use their largess to eliminate taxes on (aka: bribe) its citizens, the amount of corruption goes up in proportion to the price of oil.

If you've been following the foibles of Alaska politics, lately, everything up there meshes nicely with Friedman's observations.

Unfortunately this is utterly irrelevant because the people who are supporting Palin don't believe in facts. Facts have a liberal bias.

Did anyone notice that the oil companies continue to break records for quarterly PROFITS?

Anyone recall that for the past two Winters, that the Venezuelan, dictator, Chavez, has given needy Americans free heating oil? -Granted this is good propaganda, but does not even begin to embarrass the greed and corruption of EXXON, SHELL, BP. .......

That and she got rid of the staff closest to her and hired unqualified highschool buddies to keep everything close to her safe. McCain says he is going to fight cronyism with her. How? She has to be one of the most guilty. That is her way of reforming Alaska. She calls out everyone else and keeps her bad deeds hidden with loyalty. She is no less a part of the problem, she is just keeps the truth on a need to know basis.

Classic example of "the pot calling the kettle black."

It's quite obvious now why McCain chose her as a running mate: they're both hypocrites.

As Keith Olbermann said, "Sarah Palin, you are a FRAUD!"

What amazes me McCain and Palin's incredible ability to tell incredulous lies to the public and pretend its God's honest truth.

What amazes me even more is there are folks gullible enough to believe them.

What's the difference between Hugo Chavez and Sarah Palin? Lipstick.

None of this is a surprise. McCain has absolutely no way to win aside from spreading FUD about Obama. Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt, that's all he has left. Glad to see it isn't working. I'm still surprised that the Dems have left Palin alone, but impressed that the media has helped the public see the real Sarah Palin.

Oh wait .. you've forgotten Hatred. That's also critical to McCain's campaign.

First point: Every tax system is a redistribution of wealth. Second point: In economic experiments using simplified versions of the free market, consisting of various asset classes running the spectrum of risk return vehicles, invariably the separation of wealth continues to increase. This has always been the case, the difference now is that in an age where access to information is consistent for all classes, many simply won't accept the obscene gap that exists between rich and poor in this country and across the globe.

This redistribution of wealth issue has no merit. PERIOD. To even make this statement at a time when folks are loosing their homes, committing suicide because they have lost 60% of the retirement and savings, not the mention the growing number of homeless (w childern) on the street. Is disturbing. If the Govt can help the banks (cough cough) SOCIALISM. Its dam n well time to start helping the American People with the wealth they have given their govt since they able to work. People who need, are people who pay taxes, people who need help just lost their jobs, due to upper crust greed. This sick selfish attitude that is going around is just disgraceful and very UNAMERICAN. Good Help us all.

Mac and Cheese say they are for the common man, but they are howling at the top of their lungs about doing away with tax breaks for those making over 250k and giving those breaks to those making less than 200k those between 200k and 250k will so no change at all.

Now what is being done can be called raising taxes, but in reality all that is going on is the Bush cuts are being taken away and I thought that they were supposed to be temporary anyway, not permanent, to create jobs. That was what the Bush tax cut was for to create jobs. Just I guess GW should have specified that those jobs should have been created here.

According to Mac the reason for not doing so and giving another break when he is elected is to create jobs, one simple question where are the jobs, where are all these jobs that this was supposed to create?

Mac and Cheese act like by doing this those in the middle will be receiving others money back, not so they will be receiving their own money back, actually they will get to keep more of their money on payday.

Obama has said over and over those who work he isn't offering any thing for free this isn't a give away, unlike what Governor Cheese is doing.

Every smear and under handed comment made by the Mac and Cheese express is just a projection of them selves.

So much for the myth of those self reliant Alaskans. I would like to hear from some who have refused their dole as a matter of principle.

And who actually pays for the increased taxes on Alaskan oil? It is not the oil companies. Consequently, what we have here is the rest of the country paying higher oil prices so that Palin can give the voters of Alaska a check for which they do nothing.
