I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Elizabeth Dole's "Godless" attack ad against her opponent in North Carolina's U.S. Senate race keeps getting hammered in the press.

The Huffington Post put a spotlight on the negative -- and factually bankrupt -- spot on Wednesday, while Democrat Kay Hagan, the target of the ad, forcefully objected to its portrayal of her as "godless."

Wednesday night, CNN's Campbell Brown delivered an impassioned criticism of Dole's tactics.

While conceding that politics is "not for the faint of heart," Brown nevertheless singled out Dole's ad as the dubious "winner" among all the dirty attacks circulating during the final week of campaigning.

"The information in this ad is so ridiculously misleading, and yet Senator Dole is standing by it and continuing to raise questions about Hagan's so-called godlessness on the campaign trail," Brown said. "Is this really what it has come down to? We are fighting two wars, our economy is a disaster, and Senator Dole's message to voters is to falsely accuse her opponent of not believing in God?"

Later, addressing all politicians who are using such distortions in a desperate effort to "save your jobs," Brown pleaded: "Just say no to your own craven ambition. Just cut it out. Reclaim your dignity! And with only a few days to go, please please just tell us what you think you can do to get this country back on track."

Watch Brown's commentary:

The CNN host wasn't alone in condemning Dole's ad, either. Thursday morning, a trio of North Carolina papers editorialized against the Senator's message. The Greensboro News-Record described the ad's use of a fabricated voice to make it appear as though Hagan said "there is no God" as a "low blow ... beyond the bounds of acceptable political disagreement," even by the standards of modern campaigning.

"If Elizabeth Dole is still the gracious person North Carolinians have admired for many years, she'll pull her new attack ad off the air. It's worse than dishonest," the paper wrote.

Meanwhile, the Asheville Citizen-Times called Dole's ad a "gross misrepresentation":

The ad is not only a gross misrepresentation of the circumstances surrounding the fundraiser, the implication that Kay Hagan believes "there is no God" flies in the face of her long and close involvement with First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, where she is an elder and has taught Sunday School.

Finally, the Charlotte Observer delivered perhaps the sternest rebuke of any local paper -- comparing Dole's latest tactic to the divisive legacy of former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms.

This is indecent. It is the modern-day version of the [Jesse Helms] 'white hands' ad, a lie born of Dole's desperation in a race in which she has trailed for weeks. It is also a deliberate attempt by Dole's campaign not just to distort the truth, but to shatter Hagan's admirable record as an elder for more than a decade in Greensboro's First Presbyterian Church, as a Sunday School teacher and a volunteer in her church's fundraising campaigns, worship services and community service programs.

Political campaigns in this state are often hard-fought, with bitter, overwrought accusations that stretch the truth, embellish the facts and attempt to confuse voters. Hagan has hit Dole hard. Dole has hit Hagan hard. That is par for the course.

This ad is something else, an attack on a Christian woman's faith against all evidence to the contrary. It is wrong. It may well backfire on Dole.

It has no place in N.C. politics. Unless she admits this egregious, shameful mistake and acts appropriately, Elizabeth Dole has no place in N.C. politics, either.

This topic is so sickening, I can't stand it. Have you ever heard of another candidate so outside the realm of 'christianity' than John McCain? I haven't. The only time he talked about 'his faith' was at Rev Ricks Saddleback forum and, really, he had no choice. The man NEVER talks about God, his faith or anything else about religion. Except when he's denegrating Obamas Rev Wright. And ya know what? I put about as much importance and thought into a candidates faith in God as I do in their sex life. I COULD CARE LESS! What a hypocracy our political system is. Doesn't anybody else see that our bible-thumping politicians are only using religion to pander for votes and therefore are the least christian people of all? I can't wait for the day when a politician, after being asked by a reporter about their religion says, " NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS".

Congratulations Campbell for highlighting what was obviously over the top bad campaigning and for sure in just another example of using the power of religion and taxes to incite fear and hate mongering. Also, congrats to Hagan for responding the way she did -- head on. Yet, this is just another example of what we have to get over as a nation. We have a long way to go. Let's just hope that Tuesday's results shows that we've made some progress. For all the whining people have done about how much Obama has spent (and that means YOU Campbell -- no bias, no bull), just imagine that this is what it took to get Americans to seriously consider an man of color for the presidency. Yes, it took just that. If Obama has received favorable press that doesn't mean anything except that he hasn't turned his campaign into a fear fest. McCain has done just that and now people complain that the media's coverage is negative. They did that to themselves.

I saw McCain last night on SNL. He was funny as hell. I loved the plates. Still, I know that Obama did get an invite, but there was this financial crisis and he was in the middle of preparing for a debate that McCain tried to cancel. Some might suggest that since Obama did not have the opportunity to appear, then McCain should not have been had the offer.

Elizabeth Dole must not believe in God, or she would be more careful how she lives her life. She has been an opportunist form day one, and now she has sunk to the lowest of levels to attempt to confuse voters and win another term in office. Not a true North Carolinian, she only returns for fundraisers and campaigns. Now this. Liddy, how low will you go?

Elizabeth, you are campaigning hard for tenure in hell. Ease up girl.

Where is the SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE these days? Did it go out the window? Who cares what religious afflications these people have. I VOTED FOR MY ECONOMIC LIFE and the Republicans sure don't know the meaning of this for most Americans. Liddy Dole should retire anyway. It's getting OLD. Campbell Brown, start looking for another job, your line of BS is BORING.

"Where is the SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE these days? Did it go out the window? Who cares what religious afflications these people have."

This. Regardless of the unspoken rules that we try to impose on each other, there is NOTHING that requires a public servant to be actively religious, let alone even believe in God! The conservative Christians are the only group of people that consistently try to bring up and force this non-issue. Elizabeth Dole - your incredulously false ad is much more 'Godless' than anything it represented about Ms. Hagan. Enjoy your loss.

Is there something wrong with Dole? She can't even say "I approve this messsage" without slurring the words. God knows how many takes it took her to get it even this good.

Go Kay Hagan!

I am a complete and total athiest. I feel certain that this is the only shot we have at
life and once we die, it's over. Just as you have no sense of the zillions of years that
passed before you were born. But that doesn't stop me from being my brother's
keeper, donating to charities, working for Obama's campaign, and having more pets than
I should. It doesn't mean that I don't feel empathy for another's pain and obey the law and
try to be the best person possible. Being an atheist has nothing to do with being a
decent person just as being a Christian obviously has nothing to do with being a decent
person. Just look around you.

I couldn't agree with you more, cloudmaker. What is it with these religious zealots? I'm sick to death of the death and destruction in our world under the auspices of 'Gods will'. Our evangelical, good-christian people, in this country, that will not vote for an intelligent black man, but rather put their faith to work and vote for an inept war monger who will drag my country further down and cause more death and destruction in the rest of the world, they also escape me.

The real question here is why should it matter if someone believes in God or not. It is not a requirement to hold public office.

EXACTLY. I'm tired of Campbell's BS frankly. She needs to change the name of her show. Why is someone's faith an issue for running for office? This country is dangerously close to becoming a religious state of intolerance like some of the middle eastern countries we despise. You don't have to do much extrapolation to see it coming. And Campbell totally misses the point. I often wonder about her...

I'm disgusted with Elizabeth Dole's ad like most others BUT -- my issue is -- I'm fed up with Campbell Brown's ongoing rantings. This being her latest, she also own's the one delivered calling out McCain's campaign for muzzling Palin; she also owns one for the Palin clothing fiasco. She rants the sexist card like Hasselbeck does. I don't care what her personal view is -- she's on a news station. She's also doing the board of the various people responsible for the economy meltdown, Ted Stevens (AL-R) for his court matters, etc. She's doing a 1 day rant under No Bias No Bull which is no different that Anderson Cooper's 'Keeping them honest" crap who is also doing a board listing too. To do 1 day gives no credibility to either. It's a ratings chase and they both come off looking like i.d.i.o.t.s. Both sound like they're sufferring P.M.S. Unless they persue the individuals on the issues -- why bother. They're both lightweight MSM nothings and make themselves look even worse. Mainstreet people already know who these people are -- I know I don't need Brown or Cooper holder my hand to tell me.

Seems CNN is continuing to hire on the same road as the Straight Talk Express -- where the wheels have come off.

I still remember John Kennedy having to speak out and assure Americans that his Catholic faith would not overshadow his duties as President. At that time, 1960, we truly did not know much about any politician's faith. Now I know they were probably all some form of Protestant or Jewish, but it simply was not discussed and it was so much better.

A pox on the Republicans for starting all this with the Christian Conservatives who seem to be less Christian than the Atheists. The Republicans will rue the day they brought them into the tent. Palin has been their come-uppence.

Yes, and did you know that the attack on his faith and the fear started with Eleanor Roosevelt? One can find fear and loathing in some very unexpected places.
