I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Elizabeth Dole's "Godless" attack ad against her opponent in North Carolina's U.S. Senate race keeps getting hammered in the press.

The Huffington Post put a spotlight on the negative -- and factually bankrupt -- spot on Wednesday, while Democrat Kay Hagan, the target of the ad, forcefully objected to its portrayal of her as "godless."

Wednesday night, CNN's Campbell Brown delivered an impassioned criticism of Dole's tactics.

While conceding that politics is "not for the faint of heart," Brown nevertheless singled out Dole's ad as the dubious "winner" among all the dirty attacks circulating during the final week of campaigning.

"The information in this ad is so ridiculously misleading, and yet Senator Dole is standing by it and continuing to raise questions about Hagan's so-called godlessness on the campaign trail," Brown said. "Is this really what it has come down to? We are fighting two wars, our economy is a disaster, and Senator Dole's message to voters is to falsely accuse her opponent of not believing in God?"

Later, addressing all politicians who are using such distortions in a desperate effort to "save your jobs," Brown pleaded: "Just say no to your own craven ambition. Just cut it out. Reclaim your dignity! And with only a few days to go, please please just tell us what you think you can do to get this country back on track."

Watch Brown's commentary:

The CNN host wasn't alone in condemning Dole's ad, either. Thursday morning, a trio of North Carolina papers editorialized against the Senator's message. The Greensboro News-Record described the ad's use of a fabricated voice to make it appear as though Hagan said "there is no God" as a "low blow ... beyond the bounds of acceptable political disagreement," even by the standards of modern campaigning.

"If Elizabeth Dole is still the gracious person North Carolinians have admired for many years, she'll pull her new attack ad off the air. It's worse than dishonest," the paper wrote.

Meanwhile, the Asheville Citizen-Times called Dole's ad a "gross misrepresentation":

The ad is not only a gross misrepresentation of the circumstances surrounding the fundraiser, the implication that Kay Hagan believes "there is no God" flies in the face of her long and close involvement with First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, where she is an elder and has taught Sunday School.

Finally, the Charlotte Observer delivered perhaps the sternest rebuke of any local paper -- comparing Dole's latest tactic to the divisive legacy of former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms.

This is indecent. It is the modern-day version of the [Jesse Helms] 'white hands' ad, a lie born of Dole's desperation in a race in which she has trailed for weeks. It is also a deliberate attempt by Dole's campaign not just to distort the truth, but to shatter Hagan's admirable record as an elder for more than a decade in Greensboro's First Presbyterian Church, as a Sunday School teacher and a volunteer in her church's fundraising campaigns, worship services and community service programs.

Political campaigns in this state are often hard-fought, with bitter, overwrought accusations that stretch the truth, embellish the facts and attempt to confuse voters. Hagan has hit Dole hard. Dole has hit Hagan hard. That is par for the course.

This ad is something else, an attack on a Christian woman's faith against all evidence to the contrary. It is wrong. It may well backfire on Dole.

It has no place in N.C. politics. Unless she admits this egregious, shameful mistake and acts appropriately, Elizabeth Dole has no place in N.C. politics, either.

The real issue here is not Dole's desperation but that a belief in God is needed in order to seek public office. Just as the false claims that Obama is a Muslim should not matter. We have a Constitution so forms of religious guidance are not only not needed but only make worse the patch work quilt quality of our country,

Keep church and state clearly separated. Advertisements like Dole's run contrary to this principle.

I guess Dole thought that if McCain can run toxic ads so can she. People should retire this old dinasours in the Republican party at the first opportunity. We need fresh faces representing the party that is being tarnished by this old and toxic individuals. Republican party can be a real choice for people but not with these creatures.

Why don't you add Hagan's response ad where she reclaims God for the Democrats? She invokes the Ten Commandments, telling Dole not to bear false witness against another Christian. Go Kay!! God does not belong to the Republicans. He doesn't even belong to the Christians.

Shame of Elizabeth Dole and her shameless ad. It's a lie and I saw the rebuttle ad. Lies like this just make me dislike the GOP and their dirty tactics. I know not all people who hold office are bad, but this just disgusts me, along with the crap the McCain camp puts outs it's getting really dirty out there.

I donated $25 yesterday to Kay Hagen's campaign fund and then shot an email off to the Dole campaign, bemoaning the fact that since I live in Colorado I won't be able to vote for Ms. Hagen as well as help finance her campaign.

Here's the Libster's email address, by the way. Hopefully by this time the site has crashed and burned from overwhelming incoming volume but give it a try anyway. info@elizabethdole.org

It's seeing ads like this by our politicians that really does make me wonder why we are in those two wars in the middle east. Oil might be a big part of it but I think this ad just underlines the other main reason: RELIGION. Politics and science may change but religious biases never do. Organized religion is a tool used too many times to influence the uneducated. It's the same old "them against us" theme. We're good - They're the devil! God is on our side ..... Time to turn the page on that one. Unfortunately it doesn't change. How can we ever work towards world peace when we still have this going on?

Welcome to the under belly of North Carolina's nasty secret. Religion is a drug here in the tar heel state. Liddy Dole is using this attack as a last resort. which will appeal to certain types. However, a cascade of "outsiders" are moving here with a far different perspective. I have e mailed and spoken to her campaign headquarters. That number is 704-633-0014 expressing my opinion of her divisive, deplorable ad. I suggest that following the Golden Rule would make this a better world.

To be honest what amuses me about this one is that what has caused the fuss over Dole's ad is that her opponent ISN'T a godless person, but an upstanding member of her local church. So, I assume that, HAD she in fact been an atheist Dole's attack on her would have been an entirely legitimate attack and meant she was unfit for office and someone to be despised?

I read recently that atheists are the most hated group of people in the US. In some States it's actually illegal for them to hold public office! So much for free speech, freedom of expression and the land of the free, huh? You can be as free as you like, so long as you agree with me that God exists.

An amazing, sad prejudice.

Everyone donate at least $5 if you can to Kay Hagan. We as Americans can not let Elizabeth Dole get away with what she has done on this campaign.

She is another Michelle Bachmann. Don't forget to finish her off as well in Minnesota. We only have a few more days.

We've allowed religion far too much power in our political arena, now we get to reap the "rewards", and apparently it has nothing to do with piety or "doing" good. Remember, religion holds power over the uneducated, is looked at skeptically by the educated, and is quite useful to those in power.

Dole's ad proves ONCE AGAIN that Christians are fake and have no interest in anything their so-called religion says. It is very clear that one of their egregious 'sins' is to bear false witness. She approves this total and complete lie, thus she has egregiously sinned.

Two ironies here.

1st: her followers are equally moronic and stupid and will most likely believe Liddy. This proves their false religious values as well.

2nd: there is no god and there never was anyone historically called Jesus on which their fake religion is based in the first place.

What an incredibly uneducated and bigoted opinion. Regardless of views on his divinity, it has been comprehensively proven that Jesus is an historical figure. And to tar all Christians with the same brush based on the actions of a few is as bigoted as claiming all hispanics are criminals because some are in gangs or that all white people are racist because some are in the klan.

Dole's ad has no place in the teachings of Christ and offends as many Christians as non-Christians, I can assure you of that.

The only irony here is that you are claiming the high road with your comments...

Liddy Dole was the most darling, well-mannered lady in Washington DC for many years... What a shame she has gone that low. It's like either the Republican Party has been taken by absolute evil forces (if you believe in God) or they have taken their masks down and have really shown their true faces.

By any stretch of anyone's furtive imagination, Liddy Dole was
never a "darling". A calculating, ambitious politician maybe,
but never a " darling". Obviously she has maintained the
same ways of doing her thing-being one hell of a nasty
woman.

I'm talking about the early LIddy Dole years, but years ago... I would say eons ago, where she would do honest campaigning. Now she has done really low, and I abhor that. It seems like the Lee Atwater devil has returned to Earth and possessed her.
