I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Elizabeth Dole's "Godless" attack ad against her opponent in North Carolina's U.S. Senate race keeps getting hammered in the press.

The Huffington Post put a spotlight on the negative -- and factually bankrupt -- spot on Wednesday, while Democrat Kay Hagan, the target of the ad, forcefully objected to its portrayal of her as "godless."

Wednesday night, CNN's Campbell Brown delivered an impassioned criticism of Dole's tactics.

While conceding that politics is "not for the faint of heart," Brown nevertheless singled out Dole's ad as the dubious "winner" among all the dirty attacks circulating during the final week of campaigning.

"The information in this ad is so ridiculously misleading, and yet Senator Dole is standing by it and continuing to raise questions about Hagan's so-called godlessness on the campaign trail," Brown said. "Is this really what it has come down to? We are fighting two wars, our economy is a disaster, and Senator Dole's message to voters is to falsely accuse her opponent of not believing in God?"

Later, addressing all politicians who are using such distortions in a desperate effort to "save your jobs," Brown pleaded: "Just say no to your own craven ambition. Just cut it out. Reclaim your dignity! And with only a few days to go, please please just tell us what you think you can do to get this country back on track."

Watch Brown's commentary:

The CNN host wasn't alone in condemning Dole's ad, either. Thursday morning, a trio of North Carolina papers editorialized against the Senator's message. The Greensboro News-Record described the ad's use of a fabricated voice to make it appear as though Hagan said "there is no God" as a "low blow ... beyond the bounds of acceptable political disagreement," even by the standards of modern campaigning.

"If Elizabeth Dole is still the gracious person North Carolinians have admired for many years, she'll pull her new attack ad off the air. It's worse than dishonest," the paper wrote.

Meanwhile, the Asheville Citizen-Times called Dole's ad a "gross misrepresentation":

The ad is not only a gross misrepresentation of the circumstances surrounding the fundraiser, the implication that Kay Hagan believes "there is no God" flies in the face of her long and close involvement with First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, where she is an elder and has taught Sunday School.

Finally, the Charlotte Observer delivered perhaps the sternest rebuke of any local paper -- comparing Dole's latest tactic to the divisive legacy of former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms.

This is indecent. It is the modern-day version of the [Jesse Helms] 'white hands' ad, a lie born of Dole's desperation in a race in which she has trailed for weeks. It is also a deliberate attempt by Dole's campaign not just to distort the truth, but to shatter Hagan's admirable record as an elder for more than a decade in Greensboro's First Presbyterian Church, as a Sunday School teacher and a volunteer in her church's fundraising campaigns, worship services and community service programs.

Political campaigns in this state are often hard-fought, with bitter, overwrought accusations that stretch the truth, embellish the facts and attempt to confuse voters. Hagan has hit Dole hard. Dole has hit Hagan hard. That is par for the course.

This ad is something else, an attack on a Christian woman's faith against all evidence to the contrary. It is wrong. It may well backfire on Dole.

It has no place in N.C. politics. Unless she admits this egregious, shameful mistake and acts appropriately, Elizabeth Dole has no place in N.C. politics, either.

Elizabeth Dole should be censured by the Senate.

Hopefully this will be Dole's swan song for NC. Just today on an R&B radio station, a new ad of hers played on there talking about Kay Hagan and her being "Godless". Now, she adds that Hagan joined a country club where they didn't allow black members. Dole is absolutely pitiful.

First of all, being a NC resident, the only time you see her around here is during election time. That's it. Second, she has never targeted any of her campaign ads towards black citizens here like myself, EVER! I find it funny that after all this time, when she does finally think about us, she doesn't tell what she would do as a senator to help our communities. Instead, she tries to play us for fools, and use race-baiting tactics. Third, I haven't seen an ad of hers yet where she talks about her proposed policies; just nothing but attacks on her opponent. She's never done much of anything for this state except being born and raised here.

So I see now why it would be logical for her to not promote her policies if re-elected -- that's because she doesn't have any.

The problem with Brown's commentary is that she didn't call Dole out explicitly--is Dole a liar? If she is say so--"Elizabeth Dole, you are a liar"! If you don't or can't, move on to "hollywood" news.

The paper says "an attack on a Christian woman's faith against all evidence to the contrary. It is wrong"

I wonder if those papers would write the same about the continuous attacks on the presidential candidate's Christian faith?

Seems these so called Christians aren't acting so "Christ-like".

Bob Dole says that Bob Dole thinks that this ad was over the line.

Okay enough already with this hypocrite.

Let's all just call her Libby each and every time we see her or write about her. She hates the name Libby. Gets furious when people call her that nickname.

So let's all call her Libby!

Let me try it out so you can see how easy it is to use it in a sentence. "Libby is a liar, Libby is a liar."

I feel better already.

What would you expect from the wife of erectile dysfunction premier advertiser, Bob Dole. Class is something they don't have. Eliz Dole will be defeated in North Carolina. Geez, they live in Kansas and she's hardly ever in North Carolina. North Carolina, wake up and shove her out and put a democrat in office for Prez Obama. Down with Dole.

What's wrong with being Godless?
Americans are more prejudiced against that than against anything.

Tiggershotfulspot:

oh, what a long name I had to type! Back to the point, you forget "Muslims". prejudice against them(out of ignorance, of course), surpasses that of being Godless.

It appears that Mrs. Dole has the same mean streak that her husband is famous for. It appears that she may be toast and she deserves it. Several souces say that she spends very little time in the state that sent her to the Senate.

I just saw on the rerun of Chris Matthews show that 23% of Texans believe Obama is a Muslim. So never underestimate the ignorance of the populace. The Republicans have always used this to their advantage.
Thankfully, Kay Hagan hit Dole back with an absolutely wonderful retort ad that should be the deathknell of Dole.

Now, how are the Wright ads going to play with that 23%?

Whaaa? I thought he was a Muslim, do Muslims usually sit in a Christian church
for 20 years.

There will be heads ex-ploding over this! They worked so hard on the Muslim whisper
campaign and now want to shoe-horn in Wright, makes no sense.

Oh wait, I forgot that I was talking about the anything-but-policy campaign, sorry.

I heard Michelle Obama say on The View that Barack likes his bacon at breakfast. And I saw some pictures of him having breakfast with the Biden's...there was bacon on his plate!! That's proof to me that he is NOT a Muslim!! Sitting in a Christian church for 20 years singing songs of praise to Christ should also be enough proof to some people. Sheesh! What do they need?

People like her clearly know nothing about god because from what I've seen in the bible he was not a hater but loved everyone regardless of their views or actions. I mean dang jesus was even forgiving the guys who hung him on the cross WHILE HE WAS NAILED TO IT!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:48 AM on 10/31/2008

jesus never repudiated the old testament, and the god of that book was certainly a hater. a very violent hater. but i understand your bigger point.

campbell is doing good work with this story, but she is missing the very important question that powell asked in his obama endorsement when he pointed out that, true, obama isn't a muslim, but what if he was?

i'm canadian, but if i ever moved to the united states and had kids who happened to be atheists or agnostics like me (not that i would force it), i would like them growing up thinking they could attain the highest office.

The same old worn out attack methods the republicans have been using for years. Thier handlers usually keep them subtle enough to avoid the kind of well earned backlash that Dole is now recieving.
I am so discusted with this fearmongering republican campaign it makes me want to vomit. I could care less about these canditates' religion, race, creed, sexual preference or any other irrelevent personsal choices. Stop playing this foolish kids game and tell me, the American citizen, what the hell you're going to do about serious issues, the economy, our world standing, health insurance reform, and an equal education for all Americans. Tell me how you're going to get us out of this senseless war in Iraq. Seven years later and thousands of lives lost, our nation treasure squandered and our reputation in the world's eyes tarnished and we still havn't managed to bring the one responsible for 9/11 to justice! IT IS A TIME TO TAKE BACK OUR RIGHTS AND OUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!! VOTE FOR CHANGE, VOTE FOR OUR FUTURE, VOTE BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!

The "dignity" of so many Republicans, led by McCain and Dole, is down the drain. Along with their "plumber." (What is it about Republicans and plumbers?)
