I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Fukuyama

Francis Fukuyama, the prominent academic and an early intellectual defender of neoconservatism, endorses Barack Obama in the pages of the American Conservative magazine:

I'm voting for Barack Obama this November for a very simple reason. It is hard to imagine a more disastrous presidency than that of George W. Bush. It was bad enough that he launched an unnecessary war and undermined the standing of the United States throughout the world in his first term. But in the waning days of his administration, he is presiding over a collapse of the American financial system and broader economy that will have consequences for years to come. As a general rule, democracies don't work well if voters do not hold political parties accountable for failure. While John McCain is trying desperately to pretend that he never had anything to do with the Republican Party, I think it would a travesty to reward the Republicans for failure on such a grand scale.

McCain's appeal was always that he could think for himself, but as the campaign has progressed, he has seemed simply erratic and hotheaded. His choice of Sarah Palin as a running mate was highly irresponsible; we have suffered under the current president who entered office without much knowledge of the world and was easily captured by the wrong advisers. McCain's lurching from Reaganite free- marketer to populist tribune makes one wonder whether he has any underlying principles at all.

Fukuyama's undergone a shift in recent years, notably declaring the death of his own neoconservative movement in a 2006 essay.

EXACTLY right. Fukuyama was a neocon before that movement went completely berserk under Bush and launched it's idiot proxy war for Likud in Iraq. The war was criminal in every sense, not least the way it was sold with nonstop lies. With any luck at all, McCain and the Republican Party will pay a terrible price for their support of these arrogant fools, and the party itself will run their destroyers out of Washington on a rail. Kudos to Fukuyama for breaking with these clowns and coming over to the side of light.

Right ON! We are now entering a time of Unity, Hope and Purpose...let us kindly leave our 'bitter history' behind us, and with it, our insults and stereotypes, we now have a choice to go forward from our 'better history' and remake this Union in the original Constitutional mold it was cast from!! Hail to the Cheif, Obama the Brave and the True!!

What's interesting is this guy says he was against launching the war in Iraq but he signed William Kristol's Sept. 20 2001 document in support of providing 'full military and financial support to the Iraqi opposition' for the purpose of removing Saddam Hussein from power 'even if evidence does not link Iraq directly to the attack.

This guy has the intellectual and ethical spine of a jelly fish.

Neo-Conservatives really are anti-American

This is more of what is being referre to as a "flight to quality." The interesting thing is, time and time again when these "smart defectors" pronounce their reasons, they not only refer to the intellect of Obama, but the poor choice of Palin.

There is a serious recognition by the few intellectuals left in the Republican party that its mechanations have turned against them. It has become an echo chamber of the most radical fundamentalists and their social gospel along with economic Reaganite idealogues that shun thought as unorthodox, and in the New Party, Orthodoxy rules.

These are people that realize if the Republican party becomes the party of merely white rural voters, (aka: REAL Americans), the party is doomed. They do not want to reward the party with their support for moving in this direction, but I think they might not realize they are dealing with stubborn people.

Rather than see their failure of not reaching out, I believe the Republican fundamentalists will adopt the philosophy "If it doesn't work, do it harder." They will blame their failure on not being "true enough" to their principals, and further marginalize the thinkers and businesspeople in the party.

I think, what you are seeing is the rise of the "Real America" and the death of the Republican party as we know it. Unless the party goes into serious damage-control mode after this election, they will have lost their foothold for a LONG time to come.

I agree, the evangelicals and fundamentalists need to form their own party and not
be relegated to the republicans, who should be conservatives. No wonder their ranks
are falling apart.

Excellent analysis, LP. I predicted a brain drain in the Republican party and we're only seeing the beginning. If they lose this election, there will be a mass exodus.

As Sauron, the Dark Lord, in the triumphant tale by Tolkien, was finally defeated by the heart of Love in the form of Frodo Baggins and his sworn protector Samwise Gamgee with the help of Gollum/Smeigol, now the dark menace in the highest seat in the land and his henchmen the fear-based, war-mongering, division-addicted party of the lowest common denominator, is set to fall, and never return for the time of Light has come, and darkness is abolished in LIght!! How Ironic Barack Obama is a perfect blend of Kansas dirt farmer, and Kenyan dirt farmer, 50% white American, 50% black African, a true African-American, now poised to re-unify a bitterly race-divided nation, and if anyone has the credentials to do it, Barack Obama does!! Hail to the Cheif, Barack Obama the Brave and the True!!

It makes me cringe every time a neocon or Bush loyalist endorses Obama. That just cannot be a good thing, can it?

I admit to not knowing a lot about Francis Fukuyama beyond interviews and panels I've seen him participate in on C-SPAN. A while back he did a three hour interview on "Afterwords" a feature on C-SPAN 2's weekend "book TV'. He is a neo con, but a true conservative, I think. He's not well known outside academic circles, I imagine, but he is one smart cookie! He was fascinating to listen to, and if he endorses Obama, I'll take it. He is a well respected intellect and doesn't say things lightly, like "Drill, baby, Drill!'.

How is as many people as possible endorsing Obama be a bad thing? I personally am very happy to see some Republicans looking at the choices and breaking with their party.

Mr. Fukuyama abandoned the whole neo-con philosophy 2 years ago. It is my fervent wish that this radical ideology is receding into the mists of history -- it's the most dangerous thing to come along since nuclear weapons.

This is good news and really surprising. Nice to see academics that can be a bit flexible in their thinking.

Yeah, the Republicans will get badly hurt because Bush believed what the German, French, British and our intelligence services said about Iraq's WMD. They will also get blamed for the sub prime problems that were largely engineered by the Democrats.

Things were better under Clinton. Yeah, the Dot.com revolution did generate a lot of wealth.

Huh? German and French intelligence never said that Iraq had WMD's. However, in 2001 they did warn the US about planned attacks by Islamic terrorists. Those warnings were ignored of course and the rest is history.

I figured Fukuyama would do this. It stood to reason simply based on the fact that Booo$h single handedly ruined his "the end of history" thesis. This is payback -- as well as well reasoned.

Welcome aboard sir.

How observant of Mr. Fukuyama to have realized the STUNNINGLY OBVIOUS.

I will never, ever, believe anything that these smug, self serving neocons say.

There's no there, there.

It's all about getting over and never about what's right or true.

There is no love lost ere for Fukuyama..... but you have to at least give him credit for admitting that 1) Republicanism has brought unmitigated disaster to this country, and 2) Republicans need to be punished for that.
It's very, very rare to find a republican who will take responibility for their screw-ups. I commend you Mr Fukuyama.

Say whatever about him, but based on those few paragraphs I read, in my view man is SMART.

What a concise argument.

Nothing more needs to be said.

Democracy will not function or serve its purpose if people who have completely failed the electorate continue to get rewarded due to fear, or idealogy.

So, change for the sake of change is what is needed, even if you don't have any expectations.

If nothing else, it at least shows that if you don't get the job done, you would be punished.

If Republicans win again, they may come to belief that the DIVISIONS, the FEAR MONGERING, the REGIONLISM, the DRILL BABY DRILL chant is the mandate. That's what Americans want.

We need to send them a different message!

Mr. Fukuyama, thanks for your intelligent and generous words!

Go Bama!

Limbaugh and company will simply look past this because it must be a RACE/MINORITY thing.

If a White Conservative endorses Obama then they are part of George Town Cocktail Party Circuit, or caught up with Race Guilt.

Everyone else is simply doing because of race.
