I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Fukuyama

Francis Fukuyama, the prominent academic and an early intellectual defender of neoconservatism, endorses Barack Obama in the pages of the American Conservative magazine:

I'm voting for Barack Obama this November for a very simple reason. It is hard to imagine a more disastrous presidency than that of George W. Bush. It was bad enough that he launched an unnecessary war and undermined the standing of the United States throughout the world in his first term. But in the waning days of his administration, he is presiding over a collapse of the American financial system and broader economy that will have consequences for years to come. As a general rule, democracies don't work well if voters do not hold political parties accountable for failure. While John McCain is trying desperately to pretend that he never had anything to do with the Republican Party, I think it would a travesty to reward the Republicans for failure on such a grand scale.

McCain's appeal was always that he could think for himself, but as the campaign has progressed, he has seemed simply erratic and hotheaded. His choice of Sarah Palin as a running mate was highly irresponsible; we have suffered under the current president who entered office without much knowledge of the world and was easily captured by the wrong advisers. McCain's lurching from Reaganite free- marketer to populist tribune makes one wonder whether he has any underlying principles at all.

Fukuyama's undergone a shift in recent years, notably declaring the death of his own neoconservative movement in a 2006 essay.

While I appreciate all the endorsements we can get from cons and neocons alike, this is the same character that declared the End of History in 1990. I'm not sure I trust his judgment.

It was 1990 and everyone was coming out of the Cold War and not really sure what was going to happen next. Remember the Cold War was supposed to degenerate into something (thanks to Kissinger!). I actually appreciate a person who is willing to admit when their stance was wrong. No one has a crystal ball that helps us to peer into the future to see what will happen next. We do rely on history for trends but come on give a brother a break. By the way Huffpo Fukuyama endorsed Obama back in May http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2008/05/27/fukuyama/

francis fukuyama hasn't had an original thought since his book on the end of history, and has been giving the same speech based on that book for close to twenty years now. his book was wrong, that same speech he's given eight gazillion times is wrong, his politics are wrong, his philosophical out look is wrong ... so it's quite a pleasant shock to see that he's finally done something right !

The Obama camp should be very weary of all these so called NEOCONS hoping on his train. Something just doesn't smell right.

when you say "camp" do you mean the votership or his internal camp?

wary? ha. it should serve notice to his voters that Obama will not change to a non-intervention foreign policy or change monetary policy. Presidents now dance for their Puppet Masters...the New World Order banking elite. Paulson is running this country now at the beckoning of international bankers. McCain would do the same.

Fukuyama is sending out a strong condemnation of the Republican Party and philosophy. His statement is not meant for the rank and file of either party; this is meant for the thinkers and elites in both parties. It's meant to totally demoralize the Republican power brokers. It will have that effect.

It's ok if the rest of us don't consider it too much.

Fukuyama is *NOT* sending out a strong condemnation of the Republican Party and philosophy. He's condemning their incompetence. The subtext advice to the GOP is "Find new, intelligent people to fill leadership positions."

Another great endorsement!

LISTEN ALL: Please Go Vote! There has been confirmed reports of voting fraud with the Republican Party and Obama is need of all the votes necessary to create a landslide. Let's make sure that our state turns blue! Voting is a right and a privilege. Let's all make history together!

While I consider myself a liberal, I enjoy reading the American Conservative. If you read their blog, you would see that they have no love for Bush or for McCain/Palin and their brand of "conservative". They refer Obama to McCain.

If I hadn't known Fukuyama as a Bush defender via Fixed News (back when I was still stupid to believe it was "fair and balanced"), CNN and C-span, and had I just read this piece, I would've never guessed he was a conservative let alone a neo-conservative.

Everything he wrote here could easily be mistaken for something a liberal writes! LOL! Good for you Dr. Fukuyama! You've finally seen what we Liberals and Progressives have been seeing since 2000.

"...Everything he wrote here could easily be mistaken for something a liberal writes..."

NO! All he did is speak the truth. As rational thinkers have noted: reality has a liberal bias.

It is a difficult thing to admit you have changed your mind, it implies you were wrong to begin with. It takes courage. For all those during this election cycle who have decided to endorse Obama, I have great admiration. Please accept my meager thanks cos I am out of fattened calves.

NO! Don't be fooled. He isn't condemning conservative or neo-conservative philosophy, his complaint is execution/implementation of that philosophy. His ideas, while in bad odor, aren't dead. Four years from now, because four years aren't enough to repair Bush's damage, the American public will buy into "deregulate," "cut taxes," all the rethug humbug.

Name seems familiar - didn't know anything about him prior to this but I love these words from him:

"....the Republicans for failure on such a grand scale."

The first step to reform is admission of the problem! There's hope for "reformed Obama republicans".

Welcome Mr. Fukuyama.

Very Well Said!
Conservatism is something you can grasp, debate, take ideas from, bring ideas to - all without bringing hate and fear into the method. I am as strong an Obama supporter as you will find, but I would admit that this would be a far closer race, and for less acrimonious, if the republican candidate campaigned on fiscal conservatism and conservative national security ideals. McCain's credibility as a military hero, a life-long public servant and even a "maverick" within his own party would be a tough play to defend against. However, when he sold his soul to gain access to the party coffers, dismissed his original team and took on the same evil filth that lied about him in 2000 as his advisers, chose a VP that is so entrenched in dogma that she thinks the "Flintstones" is a documentary and spews divisiveness in the name of her superior morality, and openly chose to not campaign based on his own merits and ideas, any hope of him winning the election and, perhaps, utilizing his vast experience and ability to solve our monumental problems was lost.

Flintstones isn't a documentary? Quick! someone call Kent Hovind!

It's less an endorsement of Obama, and more a condemnation of the Republican party and philosophy. It will resonate among the Republican elite. This is a message intended for them.

Accept it with grace.

folks,
just go out and vote, take the day off and spend these longs hours in lines so you can vote and when you think that you have had enough waiting to vote; consider this time a long term investment not just into your future but that of your children, if we allow mccain to get elected, WE ARE DOOMED!

get your friends to the polls to prevent the widespread racism of these stinking republicans from becoming a majority in this country of minorities

VOTE NO TO MCCAIN AND ALL HIS CRONIES
