A University of Texas poll to be released today shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.

Just what you would expect from a State that elected George W. Bush as Governor all the while believing that a rube born in Connecticut and educated at Andover and Yale was a TEXAN.

That 23% figure doesn't surprise me. I moved to Texas from MN several years ago and have met many really nice, sharing, caring people. But as far as politics go, people in the tiny town I live in near San Antonio are stuck in the Rethuglican mindset. I bicycled through most of the streets in town over the past few days observing campaign yard signs, and found that Mcain signs outnumber Obama signs by a margin of 12 to 1 (I counted them). So assuming that the households without signs would vote comparably, it stands to reason that the geographical areas near San Antonio are heavily into Mcain and Cornyn (Senate).

Which is such a shame, since Rick Noriega is a really wonderful Dem candidate who deserves a seat in the US Senate and would have helped President Obama's administration a lot. I had 2 Obama/Biden campaign signs ripped off from my front yard within the last week, so I've set up a home-made sign with very large letters spelling OBAMA, that I bring indoors every evening.

Obama/Biden for America's Sake!!

I've lived in Texas, Alabama, Maryland 4yrs, Wisconsin and NY 5yrs.

Overall and in general, Texas was a lot smarter before all the people from CA and New England moved down here.

The vast majority of you weren't drafted. It is a free country until January. Please feel free to leave anytime.

'Course you wouldn't want to be rude or divisive with your comments would you? But every one of you will get huffy and offended because you think I'm rude. Oh, yeah and stupid.

Boy I can't wait for more of Texas to get more like you folks. Thanks for the enlightenment.

They just do not get it, ig he were Muslim, what difference, it is a religion, Like Powell said, SoWhat? we are Americans first, we are what America is about, all races, all religions , all one, so lets get out and vote. Just read a report that MCCain is counting on the younger generation not voting which has happened in the past, they come out in support but not vote, don't let the Republicans steal this one please, if you have youngewr friends tell them, beg them to get out and vote as I am sure most are, do not let anyone sit this out, no matter what age they are.

They don't really believe Obama is a Muslim they are just to racist and red neck to admit the real reason.
I live in Humble Texas and the Poll is not that far off. I am only here because my daughter's job brought us here.
Retired and loving it.

Back off. Texas is slowly turning blue. Austin and several big cities already are.

I'm not at all surprised. I have a sister in Tx and she forwards to me the ridiculous emails she gets spreading this kind of garbage. Luckily I managed to persuade my sister that Obama is the right man for the job, even though in Tx it won't matter much, she's way too outnumbered. But at least I got her to stop listening to the lies and giving them any sort of credence.

And her vote will add to the popular vote even though there's little chance Obama will get Texas (this time around).

Well. There is a silver lining to everything.

At least someone has determined that 23% of Texans...think!

I used to haul Texas church groups around in the winter on ski trips.

And how can I say this politely.

They are dumber than sticks. Dumb as in incurious. People that would go to a new place and know NOTHING about it. Wouldn't bother to learn.

And rude. Mostly because they don't know any better.

So that poll doesn't surprise me any.

Scares the Hell out of me though.

Is this surprising? From the land of George Bush I'd expect nothing less. It's a big state, and I'm sure there are plenty of smart people who live there (like you Texans who post here!!!), but when one hears Texas one doesn't think...smart. Y'all.

If they see the new McCain ads using Wright (which will be hard to avoid) they might be puzzled by the fact that this Muslim has been going to a Christian church. Perhaps it will just make him seem scarier.

That would come as a surprise to any Texan familiar with TD Jakes. And yes, there are a lot of racists here, but not all Texans are like that--not by a long shot.
